#10: “Prisoner” by Ryan Adams
Release Date: February 17, 2017
Last December, alternative country artist Ryan Adams announced his sixteenth studio album, Prisoner. That same month, two singles from the track list were released: “Do You Still Love Me?” and "To Be Without You." Where his previous album was a cover of Taylor Swift's 1989, “Prisoner” will be the musician’s first original record since 2014’s eponymous Ryan Adams. On Twitter, Adams stated, “this album matters to me more than any record I ever made,” meaning we can expect a passionate piece of art.
#9: “Powerless”
Release Date: February 2, 2017
Over the past few years, the DC Universe has inspired several hit TV shows. “Powerless” will be the first DC show to take a workplace comedy approach, however. Rather than centering on the Justice League, this sitcom follows an ordinary insurance company that must clean up the messes superheroes leave behind. Along the way, our unlikely heroes learn what it really means to be super. With a cast that includes Vanessa Hudgens, Danny Pudi, and Alan Tudyk, “Powerless” could be the funniest superhero satire since “The Incredibles.”
#8: “24 : Legacy”
Release Date: February 5, 2017
Just when it looked like his time was officially up, Jack Bauer made a comeback in “24: Live Another Day”. “24: Legacy” picks up another three years down the line, although Jack won’t be the focus of this spinoff. Instead, the series revolves around a new cast of characters, including Corey Hawkins as a military hero who must prevent a terrorist attack. While there’s plenty of fresh blood to go around, “24: Legacy” will maintain the nail-biting real-time format that made the original show an explosive success.
#7: “For Honor”
Release Date: February 14, 2017
Ubisoft is one of the leading video game publishers in the business right now. “For Honor” marks their first hack and slash title, taking place in a fantastic Medieval setting. Utilizing a close-quarters combat system known as “The Art of Battle”, players will be able to fight as vikings, knights, and samurai. If “For Honor” can live up to the high standards the “Assassin’s Creed” and “Far Cry” games have set, it could be the beginning of Ubisoft’s next great franchise.
#6: “The Great Wall”
Release Date: February 17, 2017 [U.S.]
One half historical epic and one half monster movie, “The Great Wall” stars Matt Damon as a warrior that stands up to an army of mysterious beasts. Since the film takes place in China with a white savoir, it’s not surprising that “The Great Wall” has been a subject of controversy. Nevertheless, it’s hard to pass up a movie from Zhang Yimou, who’s directed some of the most visually arresting action pictures ever. Based on the trailers, “The Great Wall” looks like another jaw-dropping spectacle.
#5: “89th Academy Awards”
Release Date: February 26, 2017
The 89th Academy Awards will honor the best films 2016 had to offer, bringing another awards season to a close. While we’re eager to see which movies take home Oscar gold, we’re just as excited to see if Jimmy Kimmel can deliver comedic gold. Although this marks his first Oscar hosting gig, Kimmel previously hit it out of the park as an Emmy host. If the ceremony can compete with Kimmel’s annual “After The Oscars” special, we can expect a highly entertaining night.
#4: “Horizon Zero Dawn”
Release Date: February 28, 2017
The PlayStation 4 has been a standout throughout the eighth console generation, at least in terms of video game exclusives. “Horizon Zero Dawn” just might be another reason to side with Team Sony. Set in the distant future, this action role-playing game follows a hunter named Aloy, who must travel across a post-apocalyptic world overrun with mechanical creatures. “Horizon Zero Dawn” won the Best Original Game prize two years in a row at the Game Critics Awards. That’s more than enough reason to fight the machines!
#3: “The Lego Batman Movie”
Release Date: February 10, 2017 [U.S.]
“The Lego Movie” made leeway for a slew of sequels and spinoffs. In “The Lego Batman Movie,” Will Arnett will once again put a comedic spin on the Dark Knight. Seeing how some recent incarnations of Batman have been pretty dark and gritty, we could certainly use something a little more lighthearted and fun. Aside from poking fun a the Caped Crusader, the film will also be something of an “Arrested Development” reunion with Michael Cera providing the voice of Robin.
#2: “John Wick: Chapter 2”
Release Date: February 10, 2017 [U.S.]
On the heels of several less than stellar movies, Keanu Reeves officially redeemed himself with “John Wick, one of the most kickass action flicks of recent years. Becoming an instant cult classic, it was only a matter of time until the Boogeyman returned to the silver scene. In this sequel, the titular hitman will face off with a swarm of fellow assassins against the backdrop of Rome. While the original will be a tough act to follow, “Chapter 2” promises to deliver even more suits, cars, and guns.
#1: “Legion”
Release Date: February 8, 2017
“Legion” is another ambitious show that aspires to bring something fresh to the superhero genre. Set in the same world as the “X-Men” movies, the series stars Dan Stevens as David Haller, a mutant with a mental illness. According to Executive Producer Simon Kinberg, “Legion” will take a slightly different approach to the “X-Men” franchise, describing the project as the “‘Breaking Bad’ of superhero stories.” If that is indeed the case, we can anticipate an addicting series that might just be a game changer for TV.
