Top 10 Most Brutal One Piece Moments

Oda didn't hold back here! Join Ashley as we look over the darkest moments from across the One Piece franchise, including the likes of "Zeff's Sacrifice", "Ace's Death", "Oden is Boiled", and more!

#10: Luffy Punches Don Krieg

The Krieg Pirates attack on the floating restaurant Baratie sees even the tough cooks who work there hard-pressed to combat Don Krieg. With gadgets and deadly weapons galore, Krieg seems untouchable. At least, until Luffy charges straight at him. Krieg throws bombs and spiked ammunition at him, but that doesnt deter Luffy in the slightest. Krieg even whips out a cloak of spikes. But Luffy doesnt hesitate to punch Krieg, even if it hurts in the moment. Its a fantastic character moment, illustrating Luffys unwavering determination - even if we cringe every time his punch lands!

#9: Aces Death

Ace dying was always a possibility, given that the Summit War was fought to prevent his execution. But watching it happen is still brutal. While Ace is initially rescued, some taunting from Akainu causes him to delay his escape. With his fire no match for Akainus magma, Ace is overmatched. Even so, when Akainu targets Luffy, Ace steps in the way - taking Akainus magma fist through his torso! Sure, the fire obscures things a bit, but Ace still gets impaled! The death of a character is always a gut punch, but few are quite as literal as this one!

#8: Law Escapes Flevance

Trafalgar Law has one of the most brutal backstories in One Piece. His country, Flevance, suffered a widespread disaster when Amber Lead poisoned the inhabitants over multiple generations. The rapid onset of symptoms made others believe it to be a disease, leading to a war that led to most of the countrys citizens being killed, including Laws family. Along with suffering a mental breakdown, Law is forced to escape the massacre by hiding among corpses to escape the country. And Law is around 10 years old when this happens. Its heartbreaking to think of anyone enduring all that, much less a child.

#7: The Donquixote Family is Strung Up

Speaking of horrific backstories, One Piece villains get a few of their own. Donquixote Doflamingos dad decides that he and his family are going to stop being World Nobles and go to live among regular people. Unfortunately, he underestimates just how much the citizens despise the World Nobles for lording over, enslaving, and generally mistreating them for centuries. Doflamingo, his brother, and his dad are all strung up and tortured over a wall of fire. While we certainly dont condone everything the World Nobles have done, torturing children is downright sickening!

#6: Nami Stabs Herself

The Straw Hats navigator is put through the ringer when she returns to her hometown. Having been forced to work for her mothers killer, Arlong, for years, Nami hoped to use her savings to purchase freedom for her village and herself. However, Arlong double-crosses her and has a corrupt Marine confiscate her money. Overcome with fury and despair, Nami takes out her frustration on the only piece of Arlong within reach - the tattoo on her arm. Its heartbreaking and grisly to watch Nami repeatedly stab herself. Thankfully, Luffy interrupts Namis impromptu tattoo removal with an epic promise to help!

#5: Oden is Boiled

Kozuki Oden endures a lot of punishing challenges in his legendary life. But his final hour is the most excruciating! After he and his retainers are sentenced to death, Oden makes a deal - whoever survives being boiled alive (like his namesake food) for an hour, gets to go free. And while its tremendously badass that Oden endures all that time while lifting all his men over his head, its still brutal! Anyone besides Oden would have had a grisly end. Oden was born to boil, but taking the expression literally is a grotesque final indignity.

#4: Whitebeard Loses Face

The worlds strongest man incurs many wounds during the battle at Marineford, but the most grievous ones are from Admiral Akainu. Enraged by the death of Ace, Whitebeard mercilessly attacks his adopted sons killer. Amid all the quake punches, Akainu gives as good as he gets. In the anime, Whitebeard merely loses half of his epic facial hair. However, in the manga, Akainu burns away half of Whitebeards face! Sometimes the series just gets too graphic for the anime, and this is one of the gnarliest injuries a character receives. Speaking of which

#3: Zeffs Sacrifice for Sanji

Sanji is another character whose backstory goes dark. The Straw Hats cook was stranded along with his future mentor Zeff, a cook/pirate, on a small rock at sea. Sanji endures months of hunger with only a bag of food given to him by Zeff. When hes unable to take it any longer, he tries to take Zeffs food, only to find that Zeff has only treasure - he gave all the food to Sanji. Also, Zeff is now missing a leg. Although the anime initially shied away from the implication that Zeff ate his own leg, the manga and later adaptations have made the self-cannibalism all too clear!

#2: Linlins Birthday Tea Party

Big Mom wasnt always large or a parent. When Charlotte Linlin was just Small Child, she still had a monumental appetite and monstrous strength. After her foster mother Carmel relocates Linlin and the rest of the orphans of Sheeps House, Linlin is treated to a birthday tea party with her favorite food. However, in her frenzy to devour it all, Linlin not only takes bites out of the table, but shes shocked to find that Mother Carmel and her friends are all mysteriously missing, and she can now use Carmels Devil Fruit ability. Linlin might be confused about what happened, but were not - she ate them.

#1: Ohara Genocide

Robins backstory is among the most gut wrenching in the series. The World Government has outlawed the study of a certain period in history. When they discover the scholars of Ohara have defied the law, they dont just kill all the scholars - they kill everyone on the island! Men, women, children - they take no chances about anyone escaping. Only Robin survives out of the mercy of one Marine. But even then, everyone Robin has ever known is murdered to hide the truth. Its a heinous act ripped straight from the very worst of real-world history.
