Top 10 Most Romantic Sex and the City Moments
And then we got to thinking… about all the moments that made us swoon. Welcome to MsMojo, and today we’ll be counting down our picks for the Top 10 Most Romantic Sex and the City Moments.
For this list, we’ll be looking at the sweetest scenes from the HBO romantic comedy-drama series that make our hearts skip a beat even after all these years.
#10: Samantha & Richard's Pool Date
"The Good Fight"
Samantha makes it clear from the beginning that she’s not searching for romance, but sometimes it finds her anyway. In season four, she begins sleeping with Richard Wright, and brags to the girls about what a flawless specimen of anatomy he is. But Richard keeps getting sentimental on her, giving her a rose and eventually inviting her to a rooftop pool for some sexy nighttime swimming. While she’s resistant to his overtures, she eventually lets her guard down and slow- dances with him (even though she does attempt to paw at him first).
#9: Miranda Taking Care of Steve's Mother
"An American Girl in Paris (Part Deux)"
Not all grand romantic gestures look like something out of a fairy tale. Like Samantha, Miranda isn’t exactly the romantic type, and prides herself in being self sufficient and not depending on a man for anything. But by the end of the series she’s married, and learns that a marriage is about taking care of other people, sometimes even beyond your partner. We see her soften and bathe Steve’s mother after she has a stroke and starts losing her cognitive abilities. She also told Steve that his mother can move in with them after seeing the state of her apartment, even though the audience knows exactly how hard it must have been for Miranda to make this offer.
#8: Charlotte Converting
Various Episodes
Charlotte spends the series looking for a knight in shining armor to sweep her off her feet, but the true love she finds wasn’t what she was expecting. She ends up falling for her divorce lawyer, Harry Goldenblatt, who doesn’t exactly look or act like the dream man she had imagined. But when he tells her that he can’t marry someone who isn’t Jewish, she takes it seriously and decides to convert. She even mournfully gives up her Christian traditions like Christmas so that she can fully commit to her new relationship.
#7: Aidan Drawing Carrie a Bath
"Are We Sluts?"
When Carrie starts seeing Aidan, she’s surprised by his old-school dating style. He doesn’t want to get physical right away, and she begins to question whether their relationship is actually a romantic one or if he sees her as a friend. One night though, after he has spent an unusually long time in her bathroom, she finds that he has drawn her a bath and even gets in with her. This shows us early on just how sweet Aidan can be, and how he’s basically the polar opposite of Mr. Big.
#6: Smith Waiting for Samantha
"Let There Be Light"
In the last season of the show, Samantha began dating the much younger waiter/actor Smith, who challenged her ideas of what she wanted out of a relationship. She was reluctant to give in to his romantic gestures and certainly didn’t want to commit to him. In this episode, she went to a party hosted by her ex, Richard Wright, and ended up ditching Smith to go upstairs and sleep with him. Despite her actions, Smith dutifully waits for her at the elevator to make sure she gets home alright, and when she sees him there she falls into his arms and questions what she was thinking.
#5: Miranda & Steve Kiss in the Rain
"The Man, The Myth, The Viagra"
Miranda has always been skeptical about romance, specifically about the fairy tales that women tell themselves in order to believe that true love is coming for them. In this season two episode, she meets a bartender named Steve who pushes her to be more open to actually forming a connection with someone. But she finally has a change of heart and chases after him in the rain before they share a big romantic kiss. She then becomes an urban legend of her own: the woman who turned a one night stand into an actual relationship.
#4: Smith Shaving His Head
"Out of the Frying Pan"
In the show’s final season, Samantha is diagnosed with breast cancer and is lucky to have Smith by her side as she begins to go through treatment. When she receives chemotherapy, she begins to lose her hair and ultimately makes the decision to shave her head completely. Smith is right there with her and tries to comfort her in the only way he knows how: by shaving his own luscious locks (even though his hair is his thing). It’s an unconventional romantic gesture, but one of the most unforgettable we’ve ever seen on TV.
#3: Harry's Proposal
"Hop, Skip, and a Week"
After Charlotte and Harry break up in the sixth season, Charlotte despairs and worries that she’ll never manage to meet anyone. The older women at the synagogue try to set her up with eligible men that they know but she only has eyes for one person. When Harry unexpectedly shows up at a singles night, Charlotte tells him that she doesn’t need to get married, she just wants to be able to see him. But he tells her that isn’t good enough, and gets down on one knee and proposes. This moment wraps up Charlotte’s romance arc, letting us finally see her engaged to the right guy.
#2: Miranda Confessing Her Love to Steve
"One"
For a long time, Miranda denied her feelings for Steve, even when the two became parents together. While it may have been clear to everyone else that Miranda and Steve were meant to be, Miranda came to the realization slowly and then finally blurted out that she loved him while they were preparing their son Brady’s first birthday cake. Luckily, things progressed quickly for the two of them after this moment, and a couple of episodes later Miranda proposed that they get married and they did: in the cutest, simplest ceremony ever.
Before we unveil our top pick, here are a few honorable mentions.
Charlotte Telling Harry She's in Love with Him
"I Love a Charade"
Aidan's Speech About Flaws
"Don't Ask, Don't Tell"
Aleksandr's Song
“The Ick Factor"
Smith Asking Samantha to Hold His Hand
"The Domino Effect"
Charlotte & Trey's Meeting
"Drama Queens"
#1: Big Coming to Paris
"An American Girl in Paris (Part Deux)"
You may have noticed an absence of Big on this list, despite the fact that he’s debatably the most significant love interest in the entire series. And he may not have always been the best match for Carrie, but he more than made up for it in the end when he followed her to Paris to tell her he loves her and that she’s the one. After so many years of break-ups and make-ups, Big was finally willing to show Carrie how he really felt about her, and leave his emotionally unavailable ways in the past.
