Everything We Know So Far About the Sex and the City Reboot
Welcome to MsMojo, and today we’re counting down our picks for Everything We Know So Far About the Sex and the City Reboot.
For this list, we’ll be looking at all the details from this long-awaited reunion that have already been dropped, from who’s involved to what they’re wearing.
And just like that… we’d like you to share what you’re most looking forward to about the series in the comments.
Who’s Back
Once again, the ladies will be slipping on their Manolo Blahniks and heading out for another round of Cosmos. Yes, Carrie Bradshaw, Miranda Hobbes, and Charlotte York-Goldenblatt are back. On January 10, 2021, Cynthia Nixon tweeted a teaser trailer for the new series. She tagged Sarah Jessica Parker and Kristin Davis confirming that at least, this trio would return. We’ll get to their families and significant others, past and present, in just a moment. But first, you’ll be happy to know that Mario Cantone and the late Willie Garson are back as Anthony Marentino and Stanford Blatch as well. However, one person is missing.
Kim Cattrall Will Not Be Returning
Many “Sex and the City” fans might argue that Samantha put the sex into the city. But sadly, Kim Cattrall has opted not to return for the revival. As many of us are well aware, there’s been some past hostility between her and others involved in the series. However, it seems like she was ready to hang up her Jimmy Choos a long time ago. She claims that she had previously turned down proposals for a third movie. The series will handle her absence by explaining that as in life, sometimes people simply drift apart. So, we’ll just have to get our Cattrall fill elsewhere.
The Families
While we’re yet to find out if everyone is still as loved-up as where we left off, we do know that Chris Noth as Big, David Eigenberg as Steve, and Evan Handler as Harry are back. John Corbett who plays Aidan, is rumored to return and, curiously Bridget Moynahan who played Big’s ex-wife Natasha has been spotted too. Of course, we couldn’t forget the next generation either. Brady Hobbes is now played by Niall Cunningham. Meanwhile, Lily and Rose York-Goldenblatt are played by Cathy Ang and Alexa Swinton. The last time we saw them they were just little kids. And just like that…. They’re all grown up.
The Fashion
Throughout the original series, the cast served up some unforgettable looks. So, it’s only natural that we should expect top fashion game once again. Patricia Field, who curated many of these outfits, currently has her hands full with season two of “Emily in Paris”. But she’s passed the (designer) torch onto Molly Rogers instead. Rogers has paid homage to the original series and movies, recycling several memorable outfits and accessories. Also, keep a lookout for a revamped version of Carrie’s iconic tulle tutu. Each look is still true to the character’s individual style. But of course, they’re still keeping up with the latest trends too.
Where They’ve Filmed
For “Sex and the City” fans living in New York City, the summer of 2021 was an exciting time. The cast and crew were seen filming at various New York hot spots, including the Whitney Museum and East Pole on the Upper East Side. New York has often been considered as the fifth member of the group, so it’s great to see them shooting on location. Sarah Jessica Parker and Chris Noth have also filmed scenes in Paris. Currently, their relationship status is up in the air. But we’re excited to discover what brings them back to the city where Big finally declared his love for Carrie.
Who’s Behind the Scenes
As well as returning to their on-screen roles, Parker, Nixon, and Davis are now credited among the executive producers on IMDb. The original show creator, Darren Star won’t be involved as he’s busy working on “Emily in Paris”. Instead, the baton has been passed onto Michael Patrick King who wrote and directed multiple episodes of the original series and directed both movies as well. Needless to say, he knows the series inside out. Additionally, Samantha Irby, Rachna Fruchbom, Keli Goff, join Julie Rottenberg, and Elisa Zuritsky to complete the writing team. But we’ll talk about them in more detail later.
Cynthia Nixon Has a Directing Credit
In October 2021, Cynthia Nixon revealed on Instagram that she was taking the helm for one episode. There was an outpour of support in the comments from several of her co-stars. Kristin Davis even shared the news on her own account as well. At the moment, there’s not too much more we know about this episode. Only that Nixon has promised that we’ll still get to see our favorite headstrong lawyer in it too. We’re excited to see how she juggles being in front of and behind the camera simultaneously. We can’t wait to find out more. If anyone can do it, it’s Cynthia Nixon.
Where, How & When to Watch
So now we know who’s back, where it was filmed and who’s behind the scenes. You’re probably wondering, “well, how do I watch it?”. Don’t worry, we’ve got the answers. Firstly, the show has been marketed as “And Just Like That: A New Chapter of Sex and the City”, and is inspired by Carrie’s famous recurring line. “And Just Like That” is a limited series comprised of ten half-hour episodes. Like its predecessor, you’ll be able to watch them on HBO Max. The first two episodes, which we now know are called “Hello It’s Me” and “Little Black Dress” will drop on December 9, 2021. The remaining eight will air on the subsequent Thursdays.
The Plot
Between 1998 and 2004, we watched this fabulous foursome navigate life in their thirties (and forties). Now, 17 years and two movies later, this trendy trio will be doing just that, at this new stage in their lives. Once again, they’ll be supporting one another through life and love in their fifties, joined by some new faces too. Parker told Vanity Fair that the show will address the Covid-19 Pandemic since it’s had such a major impact on so many people’s lives. Of course, there are some details that they’re still keeping close to their chests. But we don’t have to wait too much longer before all will be revealed.
Representation & Diversity
One major criticism that the original faced was its lack of diversity. With very few exceptions, the cast was white, heterosexual, and could afford designer labels and fancy brunches. King vowed to right this wrong both in the writers’ rooms and on-screen. The all-female writing team now includes three BAME writers, who can authentically represent the experiences of minority communities in NYC. Their stories will be brought to life by Nicole Ari Parker, Sarita Choudhury, and Karen Pittman, who seemingly complete the main friendship circle. Sara Ramírez is also on board as a podcast host, who like the actor, is non-binary. And just like that… December 9 couldn’t roll around sooner.
