Top 10 Most Unexpected Animated Kisses

#10: Rudy’s Valentine’s Day
“Bob's Burgers” (2011-)
The payoff here is great, though completely unexpected from a character like Louise. She spends the first half of the episode trying to dissuade Rudy’s romantic feelings for her only to find out… she’s not actually the one he has a crush on. Unfortunately, Louise’s work isn’t done. In order to prevent Rudy’s feelings from getting hurt, Louise takes it upon herself to convince Chloe Barbash to meet up with Rudy and give him that first kiss he’s been looking for. When Chloe vehemently declines, Louise breaks the news to him and gives him something extra to ease the heartbreak. And she does it in the most Louise-way possible.
#9: Post-Thanksgiving Festivities
“The Spectacular Spider-Man” (2008-09)
So, the tracking footsteps definitely gives us a small heads-up in the moment, but nothing about this episode clued us in that we might be getting a kiss. Gwen gets a normal amount of screentime; she’s captured by Venom and, later on, she and her dad join Peter and May for Thanksgiving dinner. By this point in the show, we’re aware that she likes Peter as more than just a friend, but it still looks like it’s going to stay just a crush for the time being. Luckily, Gwen takes MJ’s advice to do something about it, and it leaves both Peter and us watching at home with our mouths ajar. Just thirteen episodes into the series, we weren’t expecting the change in dynamic, but we’re super glad to have been wrong.
#8: In the Heat of Battle
“Hazbin Hotel” (2024-)
It didn’t take very long at all for Sir Pentious to go from seeing Cherri Bomb as a sworn enemy to crush material. And, like, can you blame him? His shy advances thus far had all failed, generally because Pentious couldn’t work up the nerve to just spit out what he really wanted to say. In the season-one finale, however, he runs out of opportunities to stall. When Alastor is compromised, Sir Pentious steps up to take down Adam. With his sacrifice on the horizon, he intercepts Cherri Bomb mid-fight, plants one on her, and finally declares his love.
#7: A Soft Spot for Musicians
“Adventure Time” (2010-18)
In her first major appearance, Huntress Wizard makes her mark. This is no slow-burning flame. She approaches Finn when he’s bathing in a river, first off. And then she invites him and Jake to stay the night. It’s all awfully forward, but Finn is adamant that there’s nothing else going on; he’s genuinely just trying to help her summon the Forest Spirit. That is, until he actually has an encounter with the Forest Spirit. From then, we’ve given little hints that Finn may have a little crush. By the end, he’s honest with Huntress Wizard and, though she says they can’t be together, she abruptly kisses him.
#6: In the Confessional
“Total Drama” (2007-)
By this point in the series, we were utterly confused. We’d long-since been shipping Duncan and Courtney but the chemistry Duncan and Gwen had developed was hard to deny. Gwen’s in the middle of her confessional after winning the challenge and she’s just starting to bring up Duncan when, wouldn’t you know it, in he comes. Because he’s still with Courtney at the time, we’re really not expecting anything other than maybe a little flirting. Apparently, though, the tension had reached a peak, because it only takes about fifteen seconds for the two to lock lips.
#5: My First Girlfriend Turned Into the Moon
“Avatar: The Last Airbender” (2005-08)
At least two of the unexpected kisses in this series involve Sokka. In Book One, Sokka gets the wrong idea about Yue’s feelings, thinking it’s his class status that makes them incompatible. He’s so sweet about it but Yue can’t possibly let him think that’s the problem, so she shows him exactly how she feels about him. Later on, in Book Two, Sokka would struggle to seal the deal with Suki. But, the next day, when Suki is about to bring up that particular encounter, he stops her ramblings with a heartfelt kiss. While the latter of these had more build-up than the former, both smooches blind-sided the characters – and us.
#4: Fake-Out Make-Outs
“Danny Phantom” (2004-07)
Fool us once, shame on you. Fool us twice… Well, we’re not so mad about it – not when it’s this cute. In the first instance, Sam pulls Danny behind some bushes when they’re about to be caught by Valerie. The shock must be enough to revert him back to human form because he’s just plain ole Danny when Valerie does spot them. In the second-season debut, Danny pulls the same trick on Sam. He’s about to be caught in ghost form by his parents, but apparently decides he’d rather be caught in a make-out. This one has Sam swooning and we’re not so straight-faced at home either.
#3: Before the Memory-Erasing
“Phineas and Ferb” (2007-15; 2024-)
Phineas and Isabella’s first kiss is one that gets erased from everyone’s minds – except for ours, never ours – and it’s also one that comes out of nowhere. Isabella is not one to let an opportunity pass her by and she doesn’t hesitate when there’s an opening in “Across the 2nd Dimension”. Unfortunately, we’ll probably never find out what it was Phineas wanted to say before he was cut off. Isabella seizes him in another kiss in much the same fashion at the end of the “Star Wars” episode. Phineas’s reaction is just the cherry on top.
#2: The ‘Moodulator’ Fiasco
“Kim Possible” (2002-07)
“Emotion Sickness” might just be one of the best episodes in the whole series. Shego and Kim’s emotions accidentally become controlled by devices in Ron and Drakken’s possessions. This, as you can imagine, makes for tons of quirky antics and funny outbursts. When the emotion gets stuck on love, we get to see Kim pursue Ron. There’s a particularly hilarious exchange at her locker where she coaxes Ron into asking her out and then full-on kisses him. They’d never kissed before this, so it completely throws us for a loop. While she’s not really in control of her own actions here, this episode does feel like the testing grounds for what would later develop into a real romantic relationship between the two.
#1: Safe & Sound
“Harley Quinn” (2019-)
Nothing pulls the unspoken passion out of you like a near-death experience. Harley sacrifices herself to save Ivy but Ivy’s not having any of that. She manages to rescue Harley in the nick of time and the two make it back to safe ground, panting and hugging. And, then, all of a sudden, their lips are touching. It’s a twist we didn’t see coming, but one that makes perfect sense with their relationship trajectory. The writers were always building a friends-to-lovers, and watching it finally come to fruition was everything!
