#10: “Origin” (2018-)

In terms of companies making a push into the subscription-based streaming market, YouTube has been remarkably slow moving - especially considering they’re the number one free video-sharing platform. With “Origin” however, it looks like YouTube Premium is finally getting serious. Don’t get us wrong, they’ve produced some interesting scripted content, but “Origin” is the first series that looks like it got a significant budget. Following a group of passengers lost in deep space on route to a colony, “Origin” boasts producers from both “Lost” and “The Crown”, as well as some familiar Harry Potter and Game of Thrones cast members. From the looks of this trailer, we’re in for a tense ride.
#9: “Glass” (2019)
M. Night Shyamalan's 2016 film “Split” was a return to form for the director, but that big reveal at the end took our enthusiasm to a whole other level. After a solid first trailer released in July of 2018 that set up this crossover sequel, Universal has now followed with a second one. And boy oh boy is it ever a doozy. Samuel L. Jackson’s Mr. Glass has been given a reason to wake up, and that reason is the Beast. Promising to take M. Night Shyamalan’s deconstruction of the superhero genre to new conceptual depths and cinematic heights, this trailer has us itching for the new year. January 2019 can’t get here soon enough.

Clint Eastwood is pushing 90 and somehow he’s still starring in and directing his own films. His first such double duty since 2008’s “Gran Torino”, “The Mule” sees Eastwood playing the role of Earl Stone, an aging drug mule. This first trailer sets up a tense crime drama about family, priorities, personal legacy and regret. A low hum in the background of the trailer, coupled with sparse hits of piano keys, immediately puts you on edge and draws you into the plot. Supported by Bradley Cooper and Laurence Fishburne, Eastwood is in good company, but add to that the fact that this is based on a true story, and you’ve got a must-watch.
#7: “Narcos: Mexico” (2018-)

While we’re on the subject of drugs… how about this first look at the next chapter of the hit Netflix series? After telling the story of Pablo Escobar and the Cali Cartel across the first three seasons, Narcos is doing a full reset for it’s fourth season, shifting its focus to Mexico in the 1980s. The new cast includes Michael Peña as an undercover DEA agent and Rogue One’s Diego Luna as Guadalajara Cartel leader Félix Gallardo. This first trailer feels entirely fresh and different, and yet it’s still got that classic Narcos spirit - perfectly blending danger and intrigue with the seductive qualities of excess. Witness the birth of Mexico’s drug war as we know it.
#6: “Vice ” (2018)

It’s the biopic you never knew you wanted, but here it is anyways, and it looks freaking awesome. Starring master chameleon Christian Bale, “Vice” traces Dick Cheney’s journey to become arguably the most powerful Vice President in U.S. history. From the opening scene of this trailer, the filmmakers make it perfectly clear that they’re not pulling their punches. Sam Rockwell plays a daft and goofy George W. Bush, while Bale plays a conniving and opportunistic Cheney. With Amy Adams, Steve Carell and Jesse Plemons in tow, “Vice” looks to be a star-studded, fast-paced comedy-drama - the likes of which only “The Big Short” director Adam McKay can deliver.

October 2018 was a hard month for Marvel fans - we learned that we’d be losing not one, but two Netflix series. It was a tough pill to swallow, but at least we had a new Daredevil trailer to comfort us. And from the looks of this trailer - coupled with early reviews for season 3 - it doesn’t seem like the Devil of Hell’s Kitchen is going away any time soon. Matt Murdock is back in his old school black costume and Wilson Fisk has been set free, forcing the vigilante to go to a darker place than he’s ever ventured before. Hero and villain switch places in the public eye, and another fan-favorite villain joins the fray.
#4: “Chilling Adventures of Sabrina” (2018-)

There will always be a place for Melissa Joan Hart’s Sabrina the Teenage Witch in our hearts, but there’s a new witch in town, and this is the Sabrina our generation needs. She’s enthusiastic, intelligent, fashionable and endearing, but she’s also torn between two seemingly incompatible paths - that of your typical teen from Greendale and the life of a witch. This trailer promises a series that manages to be fun, stylish and edgy while also delivering plenty of supernatural scares and moonlit moments of menace. Can Sabrina Spellman find a balance between these two worlds? We’ll just have to watch and see.
#3: “Aladdin” (2019)
Can you believe Aladdin is... OLD?
Once upon a time… the idea of live action adaptations of our favorite Disney classics horrified us. The assumption was that such films would be shameless cash grabs, doomed to dilute and sully our cherished childhood memories. Then… “The Jungle Book” and “Beauty and the Beast” happened and we changed our tune. They’ll never replace the animated originals… but these films actually work as solid companion pieces. “Aladdin” feels like arguably the most high stakes remake yet, and much remains to be seen, but this first trailer gave us shivers. Agrabah stuns, the Cave of Wonders is perfectly voiced and our new Aladdin, Mena Massoud, looks like his animated counterpart come to life. Good start Disney.
#2: “Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse” (2018)

This might not be our first look at Sony’s attempt to bring an animated Spider-Man to the big screen, but it’s certainly our best. Sony, your track record isn’t perfect… but giving Miles Morales the chance to take center stage, even if only in an animated feature, is really awesome. And based on this trailer, the filmmakers have really put together something special for him, crafting an elaborate story that likely never could have worked as a live action film. In this trailer we also get to meet Jake Johnson’s Peter Parker, Hailee Steinfeld’s Spider Gwen, Nicolas Cage’s Spider-Man Noir, Kimiko Glenn’s Peni Parker and John Mulaney’s Spider Hamm. “Excited” feels like an understatement. Are we living in the golden age of Stephen King adaptations? We’ve gotten plenty of them over the years, and some have been true classics, but between 2017’s “It” and now this, it feels like the master of horror’s novels are finally getting the sort of budgets they deserve. This first trailer sets up a dramatic, tense film that not only has plenty of scares, but, more crucially, a heart beating at its center. Jason Clarke (one of Hollywood’s most under-appreciated actors) plays the leading role of Louis Creed, and with Amy Seimetz and John Lithgow in tow, the film’s certainly not lacking for talent. April 5th, 2019 - mark it in your calendars people!
