Top 10 Most Epic One Piece Power Awakening Moments

Welcome to WatchMojo, and today we’re counting down our picks for the scenes where “One Piece” characters obtain a new ability or power. To be clear, we must see them acquiring it, so power-ups gained off-screen won’t qualify.
#10: Sanji’s Modifications
Most of the Vinsmoke family have had their bodies modified to become quick-healing and impossibly durable. That is, except for Sanji. However, during the Raid on Onigashima, Sanji discovers that his body feels different after wearing the suit his family gave him. The reason why is dramatically revealed when the Straw Hat cook is crushed, and many of his bones broken. Sanji is able to quickly beat himself back into shape. He even tanks a sword to the head! Sanji may be conflicted about being more like his terrible relatives, but the abilities sure are handy!
#9: Usopp’s Observation Haki
As one of the weaker members of the Straw Hats, Usopp doesn’t have many special powers like his crewmates. However, even he ascends to a new level in Dressrosa. With Luffy under threat from Sugar’s powerful abilities on the other side of the city, Usopp is determined to snipe the diabolical child with some hilariously non-lethal ammo. Although he has some help initially in finding the right location, the do-or-die situation causes him to awaken Observation Haki, which lets him locate the auras of Luffy, Law, and his target. In an instant, Usopp’s sniping abilities go from great to god-like! He really lives up to his new nickname!
#8: Sabo Eats the Flame-Flame Fruit
When Ace’s Devil Fruit is the prize in a tournament, his brother can’t resist fighting in it - and neither can his other brother! Sabo takes Luffy’s place in the final round to claim the Flame-Flame Fruit, fighting off the other contenders and destroying the ring. After seizing the fruit, Sabo chows down and obtains the fire powers that made Ace a legend. He doesn’t waste any time in paying tribute to his departed brother either, even if he’s not used to his newfound power yet. Sabo’s Fire Fist turns what’s left of the arena’s floor into rubble! We approve, and we’re sure Ace would too!
#7: Zoro Learns to Cut Steel
Roronoa Zoro may be a superhuman swordsman, but even he can’t cut steel…at first. He runs into quite the roadblock when faced with Mr. 1, a Baroque Works member whose Devil Fruit lets him become steel. However, the memory of one of his teacher’s lessons gives Zoro some inspiration. Heavily wounded, Zoro feels the breath of his surroundings. He experiments by hitting leaves without cutting them, and then easily slicing stone. In one final clash with Mr. 1, Zoro takes the killer down in a single strike. It’s fantastic to watch Zoro get stronger in real time, and in such phenomenal fashion.
#6: Doflamingo Awakens Conqueror’s Haki
When Doflamingo was a kid, his dad, Homing, decided to bring their happy little Celestial Dragon family down to the surface with the rest of the common people. Unfortunately, Papa Donquixote drastically underestimated just how much everyone hates the World Nobles! He and his sons are strung up above a raging fire and treated as target practice. As dire as that is, Doffy, budding psychopath that he is, vows to get back at his tormentors. He then unleashes a wave of Conqueror’s Haki, putting out the fire and knocking the mob below out! Even from a young age, Doflamingo was terrifyingly strong!
#5: Ifrit Jambe
Sanji’s newly awakened modifications prove both a boon and a curse in his battle against Queen. While they make him more durable, they also make him doubt himself, as Queen tricks Sanji and makes him believe he hit a woman. Once he realizes the truth though, Sanji uses his anger to fuel even hotter, blue flames that his newly improved body and Haki can now handle. Dubbing them Ifrit Jambe, Sanji wallops Queen in a stunningly animated beatdown that sends the dino-pirate flying! Ifrit Jambe lets Sanji cook with gas, and while he can handle it, Queen has to get out of the kitchen!
#4: Blackbeard’s Second Devil Fruit
Marshall D. Teach, better known as Blackbeard, is among “One Piece”’s most devious villains. After he and his crew kill his former captain Whitebeard, Blackbeard decides to do something with the old man’s corpse, unseen by all. When he’s unveiled again, Blackbeard attacks the Marines using his darkness powers. However, he follows that up with something that shocks absolutely everyone - he uses Whitebeard’s quake ability too! Supposedly, no one has ever had the power of more than one Devil Fruit. In one fell swoop, Blackbeard catapults himself to become one of the most powerful figures in the world!
#3: Zoro Infuses Conqueror’s Haki
Zoro’s fight against King sees him reach a new level. Initially he struggles with his newest blade, Enma, since it drains his Haki. However, during the fight, he realizes that the only way to bring out its full power is to go all out. As some of King’s fellow Beasts Pirates attack Zoro, he unleashes Conqueror’s Haki, knocking them out. Zoro then infuses his impressive Haki into his swords, giving them a fiery green aura. It’s a spectacular-looking new power-up, and one Zoro achieves to keep a promise to his best friend.
#2: Luffy Learns Conqueror’s Haki Coating
Zoro isn’t the only Straw Hat powering up his attacks with Conqueror’s Haki! During the rooftop battle against Kaido, Luffy realizes that it’s possible after taking one of the Emperor’s blows. He then proceeds to use the technique himself, both defending against Kaido and attacking him with Haki so strong the hits don’t even connect! The animation really goes off, with Luffy shrouded in a golden glow. Additionally, the music goes wild too, even paying tribute to the original theme song, “We Are!” Of course, this isn’t the only power Luffy awakens on that roof…
#1: Gear 5th
Every Devil Fruit can be awakened, but not just anyone can do it. After being brought to the brink of death by Kaido, Luffy becomes entirely in sync with his Devil Fruit. And he awakens it in dramatic fashion! Unleashing Conqueror’s Haki and laughing up a storm, the white-haired future Pirate King proceeds to go full “Looney Tunes” mode on Kaido, tossing him around like a ragdoll, reversing his attacks back at him, and generally being even more of a cartoon than usual! Between the absolutely crazy animation, the pulse-pounding music, and Luffy’s infectious laughter, this awakening is simultaneously the funniest and the most epic! It truly is peak!
