For this list, we’re looking at 5 of the best properties that Netflix will sadly be dropping come March 2019, as well 5 of the best incoming titles for you to get excited about. #5: “Party of Five” (1994-2000) Seasons 1-6 Leaving: March 31st, 2019 The history of television is overloaded with teen and family dramas - so much so that far too many solid shows have fallen through the cracks. For those of you too young to remember it - or those who have just forgotten - “Party of Five” tells the story of the Salingers, five siblings who must work together to navigate life after the death of their parents. From the trials and tribulations of adolescence, to alcoholism and domestic violence, this show tackled a wide range of topics that still feel relevant today - pulling at heartstrings the whole way along. We’ll be just as sad to see it go! #5: “Santa Clarita Diet” (2017-) Season 3 Coming: March 29th, 2019 Drew Barrymore as a suburban zombie living in California? It sounded crazy when Netflix first announced it, but here we are three seasons later and we totally love it! In case you’ve somehow missed it, this Netflix original follows the story of Barrymore’s Sheila Hammond, a mother, wife and realtor who struggles to balance her responsibilities with her newfound craving for flesh. It’s funny, quirky, and yet somehow familiar, mixing the best of mainstream comedy conventions with unexpected doses of gore. With its rock solid cast of talented performers, “Santa Clarita Diet” is a mouthful of fun, and we can’t wait for season 3. #4: “The Little Rascals” (1994) Leaving: March 1st, 2019 Brace yourself, because this might come as a shock: though you surely loved it as a kid, this 1994 film actually only has 24% on Rotten Tomatoes, having been widely dismissed by critics at the time of its release. Like so many child-oriented films however, its legacy is defined by the fans, not the critics, and 90s kids have made it perfectly clear that they love “The Little Rascals”. Sadly... Spanky, Alfalfa, Darla, Stymie, Froggy, Petey and company are gone from Netflix as of March 1st, 2019. But hey, we’ll always have the memories, and no matter what the critics say… [“you are so beautiful to me”]. #4: “The Boy Who Harnessed the Wind” (2019) Coming: March 1st, 2019 Based on the memoir of William Kamkwamba and Bryan Mealer, this british drama tells the story of a young boy from Malawi who builds a wind turbine and, in doing so, saves the people of his village from drought and famine. To call the story empowering and inspirational is an understatement - it’s a stunning testament to the power of creativity, determination and the ability of one person to make a major difference. Now this powerful story has been adapted to the screen by celebrated actor Chiwetel Ejiofor, who makes his feature length directorial debut with the film. He also plays Trywell Kamkwamba, the father of our industrious young protagonist. #3: “The Breakfast Club” (1985) Leaving: March 1st, 2019 Many a filmmaker has worked in the realm of teen comedy and drama, but few have left their mark on the genres like iconic writer and director John Hughes. Though everyone has their personal favorite from his filmography, “The Breakfast Club” is without a doubt among his most influential cinematic offerings. This story of detention and self-discovery, despite its age, is sure to strike a chord with almost every type of adolescent. It’s a film that celebrates our personal differences and helps bridge social divides. Of course, it’s also just a heck of a lot of fun, and a film that we’ll miss having on Netflix. #3: “Queer Eye” (2018-) Season 3 Coming: March 15th, 2019 We’re seemingly living at the peak of an age of reboots and sequels, but few have felt as fresh, inspired or relevant as Netflix’s update of “Queer Eye”. Yes, it’s still funny and charming, upbeat and absolutely fabulous, but there’s more to this makeover series than a new wardrobe for unfashionable people. With its finger on the pulse of various social issues, it touches on mental health, and questions of race and sexuality among other subjects. The show is a breath of fresh air that will make you laugh and cry but also leave you feeling empowered - and we can’t wait for more. #2: “Beauty and the Beast” (2017) Leaving: March 18th, 2019 Dear Disney… we’re not sure we ever asked for live-action remakes of our cherished childhood classics, but you’ve been giving them to us nonetheless. And you know what? Tastemakers that you are, you’ve once again proven that you know best. “The Jungle Book” was rock solid, but it wasn’t until this fundamentally human tale that we were really convinced. Emma Watson could have been typecast as Hermione Granger, but now she’ll forever be remembered as not only the greatest witch of her age, but a Disney princess too! We’ve been watching this live action adaptation on repeat, but sadly, as of March 18th, 2019, we’ll have to go elsewhere to get our fix. #2: “Arrested Development” (2003-06; 2013-) Season 5B Coming: March 15th, 2019 As the old saying goes “you can’t keep a shamelessly corrupt but delightfully eccentric family down”. Oh… is that not a thing? Maybe we’ve just been following the exploits and misadventures of the Bluth family for too long. After getting the axe in 2006, this unique series was revived by Netflix in 2013. For their second turn at bat with the streaming service, Arrested Development split the season in half and, after much anticipation, season 5B is finally here. This could very well be the last we see of the Bluths, but even if that proves true, we’ll relish every moment of it. #1: “Ghostbusters” (1984) Leaving: March 1st, 2019 Who you gonna call? Well, as of March 1st, 2019, someone other than Netflix - at least if you’re looking to watch this classic supernatural comedy. “Ghostbusters” is a film that requires very little introduction; it’s a beloved piece of pop culture history. Starring Dan Aykroyd, Bill Murray, Harold Ramis, Ernie Winston, Sigourney Weaver and Rick Moranis, it tells the story of an unlikely team of heroes who get in way over their heads when they start taking on the undead spirits that haunt New York City. The beloved comedy is moving on to another plane of existence, and it’s taking the sequel with it. Talk about bad timing! People were just getting excited about the new instalment that’s currently in the works. Before we unveil our top pick, here are a few honorable mentions “Trailer Park Boys: The Animated Series” (2019-) Coming: March 31st, 2019 “Northern Rescue” (2019-) Coming: March 1st, 2019 “Terrace House: Opening New Doors” (2012-) Part 6 Leaving: March 12th, 2019 #1: “Triple Frontier” (2019) Coming: March 13th, 2019 Ben Affleck has been going through a biiit of a rough patch. But his career has been defined by extreme ups and downs, so who knows… this could very well be the start of his next comeback! “Triple Frontier” sees Affleck leading an impressive ensemble cast that includes Oscar Isaac, Charlie Hunnam, Garrett Hedlund and Pedro Pascal, among others. A Netflix original film, “Triple Frontier” follows five military veterans who decide to rob a South American drug lord. Director J. C. Chandor may not be a household name yet, but he’s considered one of the most promising filmmakers around. Suffice it to say, if it lives up to its potential, this film could be great.
