Top 10 Surprising Facts About Full House

Top 10 Surprising Facts About Full House
VOICE OVER: Phoebe de Jeu WRITTEN BY: Sammie Purcell
Even family-friendly sitcoms like "Full House" have their surprising facts. For this list, we'll be looking at the most shocking and revealing tidbits about this beloved sitcom, its sequel series, and the cast members that made it great. Our countdown includes the lack of Emmy Awards, a twin thing, Steve or Aladdin?, and more!

#10: A Twin/Uncle Feud

Sometimes, personalities clash on set. But if you’re John Stamos, you apparently find it hard to get along with babies. Throughout the “Full House” run, one of the show’s most enduring relationships is the one between Michelle and Uncle Jesse. So some fans might find it shocking that Stamos didn’t initially enjoy working with Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen. He reportedly became annoyed with the twins because he thought they cried too much, stalling filming. Funnily enough, the young girls were said to have gotten through their audition without shedding a tear! Apparently, production tried some other twins, but the Olsens won out in the end.

#9: The Lack of Emmy Awards

A show as beloved as “Full House” has to have a slew of major accolades under its belt, right? Somehow, that’s not true! During the original sitcom’s eight seasons, it found recognition at shows like The Young Artist Awards, but never at the more reputable Emmys. However, its successor series, “Fuller House,” ultimately found some acclaim within the awards sector. The sequel was among the nominees for “Outstanding Children’s Program” at the Primetime Emmy Awards in 2018, though it didn’t win. Even so, we love the original series so much, and we wish that the Television Academy would have felt the same.

#8: The Couch Is Back

When “Fuller House” premiered in 2016, fans looked closely for callbacks to the original show – and they quickly found one. Of course, the sequel series is set in the same house as the “Full House”. But beyond that, the decorators took care to bring back one pivotal piece of furniture. The couch that serves as the centerpiece for the family living room in “Fuller House” is reportedly the very same one from the original series. It actually served as a plot point during Bob Saget’s guest appearance on the show. The family surprises Danny by having it reupholstered to maintain its look, and gifting him a blazer made from the discarded fabric. That’s a happy early Father’s Day, indeed.

#7: Air Bud Saves the Day

For years, a rumor circulated around the internet that Comet, the Tanner family dog on “Full House,” and Air Bud were played by the same animal. We’re here to tell you that is NOT true – but Air Bud did have a cameo on the beloved sitcom. In season eight, D.J. and Kimmy decide to hold a celebrity basketball game for charity, and enlist the family’s services. Uncle Jesse reveals that basketball is not among his many talents – but Comet is a different story! In this particular episode, the pup is played by Buddy the Wonder Dog, who also starred as Air Bud in the much-loved 1997 movie. Alas, this was Buddy’s only appearance on the show.

#6: A Twin Thing

It’s not uncommon for twins to play babies in television or movies – when one gets tired, the other can step in. What is a little strange is how much “Full House” wanted us to think that Michelle was played by one person. Instead of billing the Olsen twins as separate actors, they’re referred to as “Mary Kate Ashley Olsen” during the opening credits. It’s actually pretty clever. But if you want to figure out who’s actually playing Michelle at any given time, there’s an easy tell. You just have to watch their hands. Mary-Kate is left-handed, while Ashley uses her right.

#5: On to Westeros

Some child stars go on to achieve even more fame on screen, but some prefer to work behind the scenes. So is the case for Dylan Tuomy-Wilhoit, who played one of Jesse and Becky’s twins – Alex Katsopolis – on “Full House.” That and a couple of appearances on “Fuller House” are essentially where his acting credits begin and end. What he does have is an extensive amount of experience working in the sound department, notably on shows like “Lovecraft Country” and “Game of Thrones”. We’re glad he got to keep working in show business while doing exactly what he loves.

#4: “House of Comics”

One of the greatest things about “Full House” is the simplicity of its title. It tells you everything you need to know about the show in a matter of two words. And it also leaves room for a pretty simple name for its sequel series, too. But the original pitch for “Full House” was quite different from what ended up on our screens, and therefore required quite a different title. The creator, Jeff Franklin, originally suggested a show called “House of Comics,” which would have been about three comedians living together. When ABC expressed that they were looking for something family-oriented, changes were made, and a classic sitcom was born.

#3: Steve or Aladdin?

We all remember Steve, D.J.’s lovable boyfriend played by actor Scott Weinger. But what you might not know is that Weinger isn’t just one of TV’s best beaus – he also has a pretty prolific career as a voice actor. Most notably, he voiced the role of Aladdin, one of Disney’s most beloved characters, in 1992. While some voice actors come and go when it comes to Disney roles, Weinger has voiced the character pretty consistently since that first film. He didn’t actually sing Aladdin’s songs – that role went to Brad Kane. Still, the knowledge that he’s a Disney character makes watching Steve all the more enjoyable.

#2: Stamos & Saget

It seems the Olsen twins weren’t the only “Full House” stars who John Stamos had some beef with – but don’t worry, it all ends up ok. In a New York Times interview, he opened up about his sometimes contentious relationship with the late Bob Saget on the sitcom’s set. While the two became close over the course of filming, he said that at first, their “styles really clashed.” It makes sense – Saget was a stand-up comedian, and Stamos was coming off a run on “General Hospital.” Sometimes, comedy and drama don’t exactly match up. Luckily, the duo put aside their differences, and Stamos even delivered a eulogy at Saget’s funeral.

#1: John Posey’s Role

It’s nearly impossible to imagine “Full House” without Bob Saget as patriarch Danny Tanner – but that’s almost exactly what we got. There were two main actors who came close to playing the role. One was reportedly Paul Reiser, who committed to another show, “My Two Dads,” instead. The other, though – that’s where things get interesting. Actor John Posey actually filmed the series’ pilot as Danny. Apparently, the creators wanted Saget, but he didn’t have the time. It seemed Posey had the job in the bag when he taped that first episode. But then Saget’s schedule opened up, he filmed a second pilot, and the rest is history.
