Top 10 Times Anime Girls Fall for Losers (ft. Todd Haberkorn)
For this list, we'll be looking at the ladies of anime who found themselves falling for gentlemen regarded as far below their station. Whether or not they landed the loser of their dreams is another story…
#10: Stella & Ikki
“Chivalry of a Failed Knight” (2015)
He may wear the title of the Worst One, but what Ikki lacks with his magical capabilities he makes up for with his sword skills and his apparent smooth tongue. How else do you explain him winning the heart of an A-Rank like Stella? She’s a Blazer of the highest quality and a princess to boot, one that decided to trade the fineries of her position for Ikki’s particular brand of irresistible blandness. Turns out she bet on the right horse, since he would go on to slice his way to the top spot despite facing a mountain of corruption and prejudice. Way to stick by your man!
#9: Ayase & Kyousuke
“Oreimo” (2010-13)
Not to beat a dead horse or anything but – seriously dude?! Not only did you have the option to form a relationship with a sizzling gothic Lolita, but a refined, young model as well? And you STILL chose to romance your sister? Ugh. Anyways, in spite of a rather insidious yandere mode lurking beneath the surface, Ayase for the most part was shown to be a character of great integrity, always looking out for Kirino, and eventually gaining a small crush on her substantially less successful brother. However, she too would ultimately lose out when Kyosule followed the incest route.
#8: Yukako & Koichi
“JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure: Diamond is Unbreakable” (2016)
You’d think with his irresistible haircut that Josuke would be the one to catch the wandering eyes of any female Stand users, but nope, turns out that this deadly Cinderella only has eyes for the vertically challenged member of the boy’s club. While we all know that Koichi is an absolute beast in a small package with a heart of gold, it’s still interesting to see such a belle fall so hard for him from a distance. We would say it’s an absolute win for Koichi’s…but he did have to deal with her murderous stalker tendencies during the early stages of their relationship.
#7: Ami & Ryuuji
“Toradora!” (2008-09)
Hey! You keep your lavish, perfectly manicured hands off that poor dragon boy! He belongs to the short-tempered adorable tiger! As a well-known manipulator, Ami wasted no time in flaunting her stuff in order to try and get Ryuuji to fall for her. While originally just a means to further annoy Taiga, over time the rough-faced pariah of the class began to work his way into her heart for real. While having a down to earth guy like him around her arm would have certainly humbled her, there was little chance of him every truly escaping the jaws of his pint-sized paramour.
#6: Erina & Soma
“Food Wars!: Shokugeki no Soma” (2015-)
Revered for her culinary abilities and possession of the so-called God Tongue, when the eternally optimistic diner chef first encountered Erina she was nothing short of an ice queen, one very much content to sit upon her pedestal and judge all below her. And then she tasted his food. Thanks to his unorthodox cooking methods and mentality, Soma didn’t only manage to best every Shokugeki thrown his way, but also roasted through her frosty exterior with every charming act of defiance. By this point she’s practically served him up her heart on a silver platter. Probably with a delicious marinade to boot.
#5: Mai & Sakuta
“Rascal Does Not Dream of Bunny Girl Senpai” (2018)
Adolescence is already a gauntlet, so you can imagine how much harder it is to navigate when you’ve got rumours circulating about how you happened to end up with bloody scars along your body. While considered a potentially dangerous outsider, he’s also the only one to win over fellow student and leading actress Mai. That’s not a small achievement either. Not only did she start out with a heart of stone but thanks to her Adolescence Syndrome, was in danger of actually disappearing. Thankfully, she had a certain rascal save her by publicly declaring to the school that he loved her. How could she not go gaga for him after a stunt like that?
#4: Teruhashi & Saiki
“The Disastrous Life of Saiki K” (2016-)
Having the most popular girl in school falling for an average joe? It might raise some eyebrows, but it’s nothing too shocking. Teruhashi falling for a guy doing his dandiest to remain unremarkable? That’s the social equivalent of Armageddon. After all she is the most perfect, beautiful and beloved young lady in the whole world. That’s not opinion. It’s a literal fact. Try as he might to avoid her, our favourite psychic can’t help but find himself getting embroiled with her at every turn, with his steadfast refusal to acknowledge her perfection only furthering her spiral into adoration.
#3: Kuroyukihime & Arita
“Accel World” (2012)
Turns out that in this instance, it’s the fair maiden who came to the aid of her knight…a short, chubby, severely anxiety ridden knight, one who is constantly mocked and physically abused, causing him to further retreat into virtual reality gaming to escape his teenage torment. Princess Snow Black sure knows how to pick ’em. As it happens her feelings are indeed earnest towards that of the innocent Arita, not only helping him grow into a competitive Brain Burster, but also never failing to profess just how much of a crush she’s got going for the little porker. Well played.
#2: Yukino, Yui & Hachiman
“My Teen Romantic Comedy SNAFU” (2013-)
It’s not easy being on the bottom of the high school hierarchy. Cynical to a tee, dealing with the twisted ramifications of his parent’s favouritism towards his sibling, Hachiman is not a happy bunny at the best of times, and yet through his bafflingly earnest efforts as part of the Service Club, he’s actually proven himself to be pretty damn good at helping the rest of the student body with their issues…which somehow resulted in both of his female friends ending up falling for him. Considering he values pragmatism over charm any day of the week, the fact the sharp-tongued Yukino and ray of sunshine Yui both want to date him is kind of staggering.
#1: Rias & Issei
“High School DxD” (2012-18)
By all the laws of anime, a pervert down on is luck idiot like Issei shouldn’t be able to earn the glance of, let alone the undivided admiration of a five-star waifu like Rias. Then again this is the show where the lead gets himself a new harem addition every other episode and has more boobs pressed in his face than thought possible…so what do we know? After meeting an untimely demise at the hands of a fallen angel, Issei is resurrected into the welcoming bosom of Rias – most popular girl in school and high-ranking demon – one who isn’t shy to express her rather…voluptuous feelings towards her new servant every chance she gets.
