Top 10 Times Deadpool Broke the Fifth Wall
#10: Where Are the Other X-Men?
“Deadpool” (2016)
Desperate, Deadpool shows up at the X-Mansion to ask Negasonic Teenage Warhead and Colossus for help dealing with a villain. While there, he comments on how huge the Mansion is for just the two of them… almost as if the studio couldn’t afford any of the other X-Men. He brings this up again in the sequel when he and Colossus are alone; we briefly see the other X-Men in the other room… but it’s obvious they’re not up for dealing with Wade’s nonsense today. So they COULD afford the other X-Men in the sequel, they just chose to stay out of it. As much as we love Deadpool, we can’t say we blame them.
#9: Calling Nolan North
“Deadpool” (2013)
While Ryan Reynolds gave Deadpool life in the films, Nolan North is one of the Merc’s most recurring voice actors in the video games. In his 2013 solo game, Deadpool decides to give Nolan a call to ask for his voice acting talents. According to Deadpool, people say that the two sound alike… can’t imagine why. Nolan is on board for the project… but has a very different idea for the game -one that doesn’t quite fit with Deadpool’s vision. Nolan asks Wade to call his agent, and Wade cusses him out. It’s for the best – as great as Nolan is, no one is better at playing Deadpool than himself.
#8: A Failed Apology
“Deadpool 2 | With Apologies to David Beckham” (2018)
In a promotional video for “Deadpool 2”, we see soccer player, David Beckham, rewatching the joke Wade made about him in the first film; and he does NOT look happy. To his credit, Deadpool goes out of his way to apologize to David… in his own, clumsy way. David can’t stay mad at Deadpool forever, but it turns out he wasn’t angry about the joke. He was hoping for an apology for Ryan Reynolds’ more infamous films. Wade concedes for most of them, but when David badmouths “Boltneck”, Wade lashes out, defending the film’s honor. It’s good that Reynolds can make fun of himself, but slandering the name of a masterpiece is where he draws the line.
#7: A Low Blow
“Deadpool & Wolverine” (2024)
At one point during Deadpool and Wolverine’s adventure, they come across one of Wade’s variants, ‘Nicepool.’ Deadpool introduces his counterpart to Logan and remarks how he’s usually shirtless, but he let himself go since the divorce. Along with being a crack at Hugh Jackman’s weight, it’s a major jab at his divorce from Deborra-Lee Furness in 2023. It may seem like a low blow, but when you think about it, the joke wouldn’t have made the final cut if Jackman wasn’t okay with it. Let’s be honest, it wouldn’t be much fun if you didn’t have some friendly roasting between our titular stars.
#6: The Confusing Timelines
“Deadpool” (2016)
After Deadpool embarrasses himself trying to incapacitate Colossus, the enormous mutant prepares to take him to Professor X. Deadpool asks which Professor, James McAvoy or Patrick Stewart? Both actors played Xavier in their respective timelines, but with how the film series is laid out and all the muddled plotlines, it’s easy to get lost in the confusion. Of course, it only gets worse when Deadpool starts messing with the timeline to “fix” a few things, so in a way, this joke feels like a self-fulfilling prophecy. To answer his question, though, if the X-Men cameo in “Deadpool 2” means anything, it’d be safe to say they were in the McAvoy timeline.
#5: Promoting “Free Guy”
“Deadpool's Maximum Reactions: Korg and Deadpool” (2021)
As there was no one else available, Deadpool invites Korg from “Thor: Ragnarok” onto his web show, “Deadpool's Maximum Reactions”, to react to a movie trailer together. The movie in question is the 2021 comedy, “Free Guy” starring Deadpool and Korg’s actors, Ryan Reynolds and Taika Waititi respectively. Deadpool keeps denying his resemblance to Reynolds, while Korg is happy to see Waititi, thinking he’s really nice. All the while, Wade keeps pushing for info on how to get inducted into the MCU. Along with being a fun promotion for Reynolds’ movie, we can’t help but snicker seeing Deadpool and Korg watching themselves in another life. And of course, we all know Wade would get his wish eventually in “Deadpool & Wolverine.”
#4: “Polverine”
“Deadpool” (2016)
It goes without saying that fans were shocked and amazed to see Deadpool get his own movie -especially given the disaster of his first cinematic debut. But how did we finally get this film? The Merc himself implies that he made Hugh Jackman an offer he couldn’t refuse to seal the deal… and, of course, he can’t resist making fun of Jackman’s Australian heritage. Obviously, it all worked out in the end, but it would’ve been cool to see Logan appear once in the first film to pay Wade out for the ‘smooth criminals’ crack. Thankfully, he’d get his chance and more when the two finally cross paths in the third film.
#3: Josh Brolin’s Resume
“Deadpool 2” (2018)
Fans were excited when Deadpool announced that Cable would be appearing in the sequel. That excitement paid off when Josh Brolin brought the Man Out of Time to life in “Deadpool 2”. Naturally, Wade can’t resist making jabs at Brolin’s career by mentioning some of his previous roles. One of the most blatant was referring to Cable as Thanos -obviously a reference to Brolin’s portrayal of the Mad Titan in the MCU. Later while the two are brawling, Deadpool calls Cable “One-Eye Willy” as a homage to Brolin starring in the classic film, “The Goonies”. To further the second homage, Wade is later seen wearing a Hawaiian shirt similar to Chunk’s in “The Goonies”.
#2: Ryan’s Biggest Regret
“Deadpool” (2016)
Wade Wilson is about to undergo a major operation that might hopefully cure his cancer AND make him a superhero. He only has one major request – don’t make the super suit green or animated. Anyone who knows Ryan Reynolds knows why Wade would make such a request – the Green Lantern movie. The box office disaster was critically panned by superhero fans, and even Reynolds himself regretted taking part in it -so much so that it’s impossible for him to not make fun of it. The bad news – Wade ended up hideously disfigured following the operation. The good news – he eventually dons a red and black practical suit instead of a green animated one. So, some good came out of it.
#1: Righting a Major Wrong
“Deadpool 2” (2018)
Before Deadpool got his own film series, Wade Wilson first appeared in “X-Men Origins: Wolverine”, where they committed the most heinous sin of all – they sewed his mouth shut. The fact that they dared to silence the Merc with a Mouth is a crime against nature, but at the end of “Deadpool 2”, the REAL Wade corrects this horrible mistake. He travels back in time and eliminates the phony doppelganger for good. He also takes the time to prevent Ryan Reynolds from starring in “Green Lantern” …by killing him. That may have been an overreaction, but we all owe Deadpool a big thanks for trying to correct these two mistakes in superhero cinema.
