Top 20 Deadpool Easter Eggs

“Deadpool 2” (2018)
Seeing the merc parody the long and dramatic openings associated with James Bond films would’ve been a satisfying experience on its own. However, the sequence also included a few funny surprises. Since David Leitch directed “Deadpool 2” and a certain 2014 Keanu Reeves film, the director is listed as “One of the guys who killed the dog in John Wick" in the opening. The elaborate sequence also features subtle foreshadowing. At one point, you can seemingly see the teddy bear that belonged to Hope Summers before tragedy struck. After these small details were combined with jabs at the creative team and other movies, we got an unforgettable opening.

While it’s not the worst superhero movie ever made, it’s well known that the “Green Lantern” movie was a big disappointment for fans. Luckily for us, Ryan Reynolds isn’t afraid to address this. The opening credits to the first movie provide a blink-and-you’ll miss it card to parody the role. And everyone remembers the line where Wade Wilson makes certain specific non green fashion demands before he gets experimented on. Even after those great zingers, the writers took it one step further in the sequel. When Ryan Reynolds himself gets the “Green Lantern” script, Deadpool makes sure the actor will never star in the film. We don’t think the merc will ever stop assassinating the DC movie’s reputation.

Since Wade Wilson and Ryan Reynolds are both proud Canadians, it only makes sense they would toss in the occasional reference and joke about their homeland. There’s a great throwaway gag when Deadpool punches Colossus across the face. As his hand gets smashed by the hit, he lets loose the first line of the Canadian national anthem in response. And as Deadpool sets himself up to kick the everloving stuffing out of Ajax, he adds his own golf commentary. He uses the joke to shout out Regina, Saskatchewan, a city in west-central Canada. It’s a fitting reference in a “Deadpool” movie because…well we’ll let Deadpool explain.

In the first “Deadpool”, audiences could catch a quick glimpse of a female mutant with a few extra bones in her back. This extremely brief cameo was the film’s way of paying homage to the mutant Marrow. She just so happened to make her grand debut in a Cable comic. After Marrow’s subtle appearance, we got another sneaky shout out to his mom Madelyn Pryor. A black ice cream truck in “Deadpool 2” features the words “Pryor’s Treats” on the side. Time will tell if she’ll get a bigger and less chilly reference in the future. Both Pryor and Marrow deserve some extra attention in a future story.

Audiences have grown to expect at least one post credits scene at the end of their superhero movies. Both “Deadpool” films have gone the extra mile to make sure audiences are laughing after the main film is done. In the first film, the merc with the mouth put on a bathrobe to pay homage to the “Ferris Bueller’s Day Off” post credits scene. The production team made sure to build an extremely similar looking set and repeat some of the same camera angles. But as an added bonus, Deadpool also gave audiences a major hint at what to expect in the next film. While we didn’t end up getting Keira Knightley as Cable, we definitely left the theater on a satisfying note.

It seemed like no Marvel villain or hero was safe from getting called out by the merc in his second movie. We had a feeling that Deadpool wouldn’t be able to resist talking about how Josh Brolin appeared as both Cable and Thanos in the same year. The merc also name drops or jokes about Black Widow, Hawkeye and more throughout the story.. It all led up to a fantastic recreation of an emotional “Avengers: Age of Ultron” trend. When Black Widow needs to calm the Hulk down, she uses a very specific phrase. Deadpool tries to do the same on Juggernaut with…less than ideal results. At least he succeeded in making yet another MCU moment feel silly.

This Canadian superhero team isn’t exactly what you would call an A-list squad of crime fighters. But they do hold a special place in the hearts of comic book fans for their connection to one-time teammate Wolverine. While Deadpool has insulted Alpha Flight in the past, his sequel film did include a nice shout out to the team. When you look closely at the lovable Dopinder’s taxi, you can catch an advertisement for an airline on its roof. That company is appropriately named Alpha Flight. Honestly, the Canadian team should be happy they’re only a background reference. Fans know all too well what happened to the last team Deadpool put together.

Hugh Jackman and Wolverine have consistently been two of Deadpool’s biggest targets for jokes. We’ve seen the merc do everything from wear a paper cut out of the actor’s face to joke about his relationship with the mutant. While Deadpool’s blast from the past “X-Men: Origins” scene with Wolverine was great, there’s one hilarious Jackman Easter Egg that blew us away. When Deadpool briefs the X-Force about a prisoner convoy they’re going to attack, you can spot a prisoner labeled 24601. That’s the same prisoner number Jackman had when he played Jean Valjean in “Les Miserables”. We’d love to see Deadpool slide through time to visit the actor’s miserable protagonist.

Deadpool’s popularity is the result of the many writers and artists that have helped shape him over the years. Ask any Poolhead who wrote the character’s defining runs, however, and the names Duggan and Simone are sure to come up. Gail Simone penned the fan-favorite “Healing Factor” story arc in 2002. Wade borrows Gail’s name while calling a gang member. Additionally, he also rides the red scooter she gave him during her run. But she’s not the only artist to get a shout out. Writer Gerry Duggan’s run with the character between 2012 to 2015 was highly praised, especially for its humor. When Weasel spills the beans to Cable during “interrogation”, he points Cable in the direction of Gerry Duggan Parkway.

Remember that one goon who worked for Ajax that Deadpool inexplicably left alive and treated like an old friend? Bob was no random baddie. In the comics, this goon works for the criminal organization Hydra. He and the merc with the mouth have shared many misadventures together over the years. Just like members of Hydra couldn’t reveal who they were, the Deadpool film wasn’t legally allowed to directly reference the sinister group when the movie was made. But the context clues and names make it pretty clear that this Bob has a Hydra gig. His cameo is a fantastic and sneaky Easter Egg. Now that Deadpool is basking underneath the Disney umbrella, he may be able to have a more open reunion with his friend.

We were initially too distracted by Cable being a badass to notice when he walked past big Hollywood names. When the future mutant sees that he’s being followed onto a prison convoy, he notably ejects a prisoner’s cell at Deadpool. The person in that cell happens to be played by “Deadpool 2” director David Leitch. Before that point, Cable runs into two men having a very weird conversation about toilet paper. While the duo might not look familiar, it turns out that Alan Tudyk and Matt Damon were underneath the costumes and Southern accents. It seems like Damon loves having minor cameos in major superhero pictures. And last but certainly not least, having Brad Pitt appear as the Vanisher was a hilariously unexpected twist.

Over the course of several Fox mutant films, audiences kept getting teasers that Mr. Sinister would appear. In a “X-Men: Apocalypse” post-credits scene, a mysterious businessman puts materials from the Weapon X experiment into a briefcase that bears the Essex Corp. logo. Nathaniel Essex happens to be better known as the infamous X-Men villain Mr. Sinister. Surprisingly, “Deadpool 2” built on this serious hint by showing us that the facility where Russell Collins and other young mutants were held and tormented is known as Essex House. Unfortunately, we never saw what Mr. Sinister was planning to do with all his ill gotten genetic research. We can only imagine the havoc the villain could cause if he got his hands on Deadpool’s fast healing abilities.

Both of the first two merc movies were accompanied by great soundtracks filled with nostalgic classics, big hit songs and at least one Celene Dion number. One of the most awesome track inclusions comes courtesy of TeamHeadKick. The musical act is known for releasing rap songs for famous nerdy properties. Before the first movie was released, they were invited to contribute their Deadpool Rap to the soundtrack. The song went on to make the soundtrack of the first film while an X-Force remix was featured on the deluxe album for “Deadpool 2”. Hearing that fans got their original work into a big and funny film is seriously encouraging for other artists.

None of the Essex House employees seemed to be big fans of mutants. That’s what made a particular poster especially disturbing. By looking at the background of the Essex House, viewers can spot a poster for an event called M-Day. In the comics, this was when Scarlet Witch infamously uttered a phrase that nearly rendered mutants extinct. We never see a fully fledged Scarlet Witch next to a mutant in the Fox films. However, a twisted company basically extinguished the possibility for mutants to be naturally born by the time “Logan” began. In a way, the dark M-Day that “Deadpool 2” hinted at did come to be. But luckily, it wasn’t the end for mutants.

When Deadpool and his allies start the final battle against Ajax, wide shots of the villain’s base of operations make it pretty clear that he’s hanging out on a broken helicarrier. These titanic aerial vehicles have played huge roles in MCU films like “Captain America: Winter Soldier”. So, it was pretty bold for the writers to include one in the final film. It does certainly help that none of the characters refer to the helicarrier by name. While including one of these vehicles was just a great visual gag in 2016, the introduction of a Marvel multiverse makes it a better reference in hindsight. Does Deadpool live in a world where a Cap variant destroyed helicarriers during “Winter Soldier” before Ajax started using one?

Although Deadpool is arguably one of the most popular characters in the medium, his creator, Rob Liefeld, is a bit more divisive. He gets tons of credit for having created Deadpool, Domino, and Cable. But his artwork is frequently mocked in the industry. The characters Liefeld draws are known for having too many muscles, unrealistic ratios and having an excess of pouches. His most infamous design quirk is that he often tries to avoid drawing feet. So, as soon as Deadpool got a chance to poke fun at a comic industry inside joke, he couldn't help but take his creator to task. Not only did this jab get a chuckle out of audiences, but Liefeld himself personally signed off on the joke.

“X-Men Origins: Wolverine” became infamous for its choice to introduce Ryan Reynolds as Deadpool before sewing the character’s mouth shut. The merc acknowledged the fan outrage over removing such a crucial part of the mutant’s character several times in the first film. After Deadpool gained the ability to time travel, he also eliminated that counterpart. But there are even dialogue callbacks to that quiet and hated merc. (Insert broll) Reynolds also used that exotic line in an “X:Men: Origins Wolverine” trailer. And since that prequel movie featured Wade Wilson slicing bullets, the second Deadpool movie makes fun of that scene too. It’s ridiculously fun watching Reynolds acknowledge both the fun and awful sides of a failed experiment.

As iconic as Deadpool’s red and black outfit is, that’s not the only costume he’s worn over the years. When the merc worked with the X-Men, he rocked a black and yellow number with a very distinct x. The sequel paid homage to the costume by having him don a similar looking jersey. The movie also found a way to work in his awesome and more color neutral X-Force suit. Rather than actually have Wade do a costume change, the sequel sees him get hit directly with a fiery blast. When he gets back up, the resulting ash completely changes the colors of his suit. This was a nice bit of fan service and way to highlight a great suit.

The X-Men franchise wanted to give us more exciting adventures with James McAvoy’s young Professor X while still keeping Patrick Stewart as the older edition of the legendary mutant. However, the new stories created numerous continuity issues that made it nearly impossible for both versions of the character to exist in the same timeline. Deadpool naturally couldn’t miss a chance to poke fun at the confusion. This sharp joke was elevated by a stunning cameo in his sequel film. While hanging at the X-mansion, McAvoy’s Xavier and other prequel characters hide themselves from Deadpool. This incredible scene made us laugh while establishing the merc’s place in the X-men continuity. If both movie franchises had continued, Deadpool could’ve made an epic cameo in a McAvoy film.

“Once Upon a Deadpool” (2018)
Fans knew a PG-13 version of “Deadpool 2” would have to cut a few scenes. But they couldn’t anticipate it would add so many Easter Eggs. At the beginning of this edit, Deadpool traps Fred Savage in a bed and forces the actor to listen to a story. This blatant reference to “Princess Bride” features everything from Judge Dredd nods to sketches filled with callbacks to the first “Deadpool”. Additionally, Fred Savage gets to criticize the sequel by addressing fan complaints and pointing at plot holes. The “Princess Bride” framing device adds so much to the movie that it feels like an entirely new viewing experience. Every team member deserves applause for giving us more Easter Eggs than we could’ve possibly wished for.
