#10: “All your base are belong to us.”
“Zero Wing” (1989)
This game has mostly been long forgotten—except for the hilarious quote in its opening cut-scene. The line is the result of a botched Japanese-English translation. In the late 90s, a GIF with the phrase surfaced and eventually went viral. Fans turned it into a meme by putting the words on signs, cereal boxes, and giving it an epic dance remix.
#9: “What are Ya Buyin’?"
“Resident Evil 4” (2005)
There are a lot of things that make this game memorable, but one of our favorites is the creepy merchant who sells you items and buys the treasure you find. His shady appearance is enough to give us the creeps, but these words and the gravelly tone he speaks them in really freak us out. Still he’s got a lot of good things on sale stranger, and when you give him treasures: (Ahh I’ll buy it at a high price)
#8: “Hey! Listen!’”
“The Legend of Zelda: The Ocarina of Time” (1998)
Hyrule can be a scary place. Thankfully, the fairy Navi is there to help you out. Not only that, but she doesn’t let you forget about her presence, as she repeats this line in her high-pitched squeal when you find new things or need help. We couldn’t make through our quest without her, and these words ensured that we’d always remember her, even if she makes you wanna swap out your butterfly net for a fly swatter.
#7: “Objection!”
“Ace Attorney” series (2001-)
This line was used by lawyers in court and courtroom dramas before the “Ace” games, but the series showed us how much fun it could be … according to Deadpool. Phoenix Wright and his colleagues use it throughout the game to disprove witnesses or rebut legal opponents. The phrase became widely used around the internet, with fans creating videos, using it on forums, and even making a website for you to make your own “Objection” sequence.
#6: “Headshot!”
“Unreal Tournament” series (1999-)
We love doing battle with opponents in this arena FPS, but it’s taking them out that we love even more. When we hear this word, we know that we’ve done our job. There are lots of ways to kill your enemy in the game, but none of them are quite as satisfying as landing a shot to the noggin and hearing the announcer say this immortal phrase. This sound bite was so popular it even made it’s way onto Counterstrike servers in the years to come.
#5: "Snake? Snake? SNAAAKKKEEE!”
“Metal Gear” series (1987-)
It sucks when Snake dies, but at least you get the consolation prize of hearing these iconic words. No matter which character says it, the phrase keeps the game fun even when you fail to complete your mission. Well, maybe it get’s annoying, but it sure is memorable. The quote is so famous that it followed Snake into his appearance in “Super Smash Bros. Brawl.”
#4: "Hadouken!"/"Sonic boom!”
“Street Fighter” series (1987-)
There are so many great lines from this series that we couldn’t bear to choose just one. We love using Ryu, Ken, and Guile’s attacks because of how deadly they are, but the characters’ announcements before unleashing the moves make them even more enjoyable. It’s nice to let your opponent how you’re going to kick his ass just before you do it.
#3: "Do a barrel roll!”
“Starfox 64” (1997)
When you get into trouble with your enemies, Peppy’s here to tell you what to do. Although technically the maneuver is actually called an Aileron roll in aviation circles (no pun intended), it does come in handy to deflect enemy fire. This line became a such a popular internet meme that if you type the phrase into Google, you get this cool animation. And it has a nice ringtone remix too.
#2: “It’sa me, Mario.”
“Super Mario 64” (1996)
The Mario games are full of classic lines, like when Toad tells you in “Super Mario Bros.,” “"Thank you Mario! But our princess is in another castle.” But nothing from the series gets us quite like Mario’s introduction of himself in the opening to the N64 game, which was the first time most gamers heard him speak. As such it’s been referenced in other games (Show AC2 clip) and became Mario’s trademark phrase.
Before we get to our number one, let’s take a look at some honorable mentions:
#1: “Finish him!”
“Mortal Kombat” series (1992-)
Taking the top spot is this line from the classic fighter series. When you hear it, you know you can take your opponent down with one of the Fatality moves. It’s the perfect lead-up to an incineration or decapitation. These words will live on forever, but when you hear them, you know that your opponent won’t. It’s all the better when you hear the proof that your move was successful that the move was successful ("Fatality").
