VOICE OVER: Phoebe de Jeu WRITTEN BY: Saim Cheeda
You can always count on this trickster to be up to no good. For this list, we'll be looking at actions taken by the God of Mischief that even his greatest fans will have a hard time defending. Our countdown includes “Thor: Ragnarok”, "The Avengers", “Avengers: Infinity War”, and more!

#10: Triggering Ragnarök

“Thor: Ragnarok” (2017) Admittedly, this wasn’t Loki’s decision. But he is the one who completed the doom of his adopted home. With Hela too powerful to fight, Thor devises the plan to destroy Asgard and save his remaining people. He tasks Loki with reviving Surtur, whose return in his most powerful form is too much even for Hela. Loki also (arguably) bears the responsibility for putting Ragnarok in motion, as it was his banishment of Odin that prevented the All-Father from warning Thor about Hela until right before his death. This meant the Asgardians were unequipped to handle Hela’s arrival, and eventually forced Thor to let Loki trigger the end of their world.

#9: He Ignited The Avengers / Defenders War

“The Avengers #115–118” & “The Defenders #8–11” In the 1970s, Dormammu teamed with Loki to capture the artefact known as the Evil Eye. To do so, they trick the Defenders into making them believe that the Eye can turn Black Knight back from a statue. Dormammu plans to use the object to merge his dark dimension with the universe. Loki, being the trickster he is, betrays Dormammu by manipulating the Avengers against the Defenders so he can steal the Evil Eye for himself amidst the confusion. This begins the Avengers/Defenders war, with both sides battling under the belief that the other side are the villains. Loki clearly takes great pleasure in making Thor battle his own friend and seeing his brother’s team collapse.

#8: Making the Absorbing Man & Using Other Major Villains

“Journey Into Mystery #114” The Absorbing Man is one of Thor’s most enduring adversaries. But he wouldn’t exist without Loki! The trickster turned Carl Creel into a supervillain using a magical potion that gave Creel the power to absorb the properties of anything he touches. As such, the Absorbing Man’s many superpowered crimes can be laid at the feet of Loki, who even tried to make the Absorbing Man conquer Asgard. Loki has also used other villains such as Norman Osborn, Surtur, and Dormammu to his advantage. He’s manipulated Asgard’s Destroyer armor in both the comics and MCU, twisting its purpose to protect the ruler of Asgard by siccing it on Thor—at the expense of the lives of those around it.

#7: Ending Kid Loki’s Life

“Journey into Mystery #645” In the Siege storyline, Loki sacrifices himself against the Void. He soon returns to life, however, as a young boy—this time with a conscience too! While Kid Loki is a refreshing take on the character, it turns out that his old and malevolent personality has survived, but Kid Loki keeps him - as the raven Ikol - at bay. Sadly, he’s eventually forced to empower Ikol when returning Thor back to life after the hero’s death fighting the Midgard Serpent. Kid Loki is manipulated by Ikol into tying his life force to an object that the demon Mephisto can use to consume all of creation. Convoluted, we know. But this was Loki’s plan all along, as Kid Loki’s sacrifice to destroy the artefact allows Loki to return and benefit from Kid Loki wiping out his past misdeeds.

#6: What He Does to Phil Coulson

“The Avengers” (2012) Upon being transported to Earth, Loki instantly puts his plans of invasion in motion by controlling the minds of Hawkeye and Erik Selvig through the scepter. He uses these men to plot an attack on S.H.I.E.L.D., and pit the heroes against one another. His mission complete, Loki finds his escape hindered by Agent Phil Coulson. Unfortunately, Coulson's brave attempt only gets him killed, as Loki rather cowardly stabs him in the back. Adding insult to injury, he takes obvious pleasure in killing Coulson as Thor watches on helplessly. Loki even takes the time to gloat about the successful execution of his plan, rubbing it in the dying man’s face.

#5: His Attempt to Tear Down Jotunheim

“Thor” (2011) In order to impress his adoptive father Odin, Loki devises an elaborate plot to kill his biological father, Laufey. In his quest for power, respect and approval, however, Loki lashes out in all directions. He not only tries to kill his brother Thor, but also takes things to a worse extreme when he decides to demolish all of Jotunheim. Oh, what some people will do to satisfy an inferiority complex! Loki doesn’t seem bothered by the concept of massive destruction on a planetary scale. He battles Thor to use the Bifrost to blow Jotunheim up, causing the bridge to be destroyed in the process. His actions are so heinous that Odin himself is at a loss for words when he sees the destruction his son has caused.

#4: Usurping Odin & Banishing Him to Earth

“Thor: The Dark World” (2013) & “Thor: Ragnarok" (2017) In this 2013 sequel, Thor breaks Loki out of prison to gain access to Svartalfheim, the home of the Dark Elves. Here, Loki seemingly sacrifices himself to save Thor in a powerful moment of redemption. In the end, however, it’s revealed that Loki faked his death to gain access to Asgard and impersonate his father. It was all just an elaborate plot to keep Thor out of Asgard and steal the throne from Odin. As revealed in Thor: Ragnarok, Loki cursed his father to remain in a daze and left him at a retirement home on Earth for years. This proves to be Asgard’s undoing as well, as Thor reveals that the nine realms fell into chaos without Odin’s supervision. Great job, Loki!

#3: Stealing the Tesseract to Cause Thanos' Attack

“Thor: Ragnarok” (2017) & “Avengers: Infinity War” (2018) Old habits die hard, but in this case they lead to literal death. When setting up Ragnarok by reviving Surtur, Loki comes across the Tesseract once again. Always drawn to this object of power, Loki can’t resist the temptation to steal it during the Asgardians’ escape. This turns out to be their doom, as Thanos and the Children of Thanos are able to track them down due to the Tesseract’s position and slaughter half of the Asgardians. Stealing the Tesseract also indirectly leads to the death of half of all life, as its destruction on Asgard would have prevented Thanos from completing the Infinity Gauntlet. Loki seems doomed to repeat old errors, however, as his alternate self in “Avengers: Endgame” does exactly the same thing.

#2: His Initiation of the Siege of Asgard

Top 10 Worst Things That The Green Goblin has Done

“Siege” After becoming director of S.H.I.E.L.D., Norman Osborn brings together a group of villains—including Loki. Never a true team player, Loki once again uses this position to play both sides, as he convinces Osborn to attack Asgard while claiming his own innocence to the Asgardians. Loki then continues to manipulate Osborn by disguising himself as the Green Goblin persona and laying siege to Asgard. Loki kills anyone who can stand in the way of this siege—even neutralizing Heimdall in the name of his twisted goals. This war claims the lives of many Asgardians and gods, to the point where Loki himself is unable to fathom all the chaos he’s wrought. Before we unveil our top pick, here are a few honorable mentions. Showing the Dark Elves the Way to the Palace, “Thor: The Dark World” (2013) Because This Resulted in the Death of His Mother Transforming Thor Into a Frog, “Thor #364–366” Because Being the “Frog of Thunder” Is Never a Great Look Unleashing the Hulk on S.H.I.E.L.D., “The Avengers” (2012) This Rampage Nearly Destroyed the Heroes in One Go “The Avengers” (2012) FAKEOUT #1: Stab Thor as a Child “Thor: Ragnarok” (2017) Alright, maybe this was more of a joke than anything else, but stabbing your big brother? Not cool, Loki!

#1: Leading the Invasion of New York

From Animation to Live-Action: How Disney Changed Its Leading Ladies

“The Avengers” (2012) Through The Other, Loki was tempted by Thanos into conquering Earth and establishing himself as its king, which is a campaign he began after gaining control of Thanos’ army, the Chitauri. Even before the actual invasion takes place, Loki’s death toll is difficult for even Thor to justify. The whole situation becomes much worse, however, when he opens up a portal that brings Thanos’ forces in to destroy New York City. His actions not only claim thousands of lives, but also could have spelled the doom of millions - had it not been for Iron Man’s deflection of the nuclear bomb from the World Security Council. To top things off, Loki never shows any remorse for any of this either, as he takes on his usual sarcastic attitude when confronted about his actions.
