Top 20 Greatest Dragon Type Pokemon

Welcome to WatchMojo, and today we’re counting down our picks for the best draconic Pokémon.
#20: Altaria
Just because they’re dragon types, doesn’t mean they have to look like dragons! Altaria is a blue, bird-like Dragon/Flying Pokémon, whose fluffy, cloud-like wings and dimpled cheeks give it a cuddly appearance. Its Mega Evolution adds not only the Fairy type to the mix, but also even more fluff! However, looks can be deceiving, since Altaria is as fierce as its fellow dragons. Winona’s Altaria is particularly terrifying - nobody expects that thing to use Earthquake! Getting wrecked by one after challenging that gym certainly makes everyone want one for themselves!
#19: Baxcalibur
Pokémon can take inspiration from a lot of places, and this one is derived from the king of the monsters - Godzilla! Everything from its axe-like spine to its signature move, Glaive Rush, is derived from cinema’s most famous reptilian kaiju. But Baxcalibur is more than just a Godzilla tribute! The unholy fusion of Dragon and its oldest foe, the Ice type, Baxcalibur sports some truly overwhelming attack power! Whether it attacks with its icy breath, powerful claws, or its massive back spine, Baxcalibur will deal some atomic level damage! Godzilla would be proud.
#18: Reshiram & Zekrom
This pair of Pokémon are the mascots for “Pokémon Black & White.” Both have similar designs, being winged dragons with each of their tails lighting up once they enter Overdrive mode. Reshiram is the white Dragon/Fire type and is a stronger special attacker, while Zekrom is a black Dragon/Electric type with greater physical attack strength. Reshiram has a more mystical appearance, while Zekrom has echoes of technology in its design. We honestly couldn’t decide between them, but then again, they should both be used to being “combined.” More on that soon…
#17: Naganadel
Resembling a mix between a dragon and a wasp, Naganadel certainly has plenty of sting to it - and not just because of the enormous needle that takes up half its body. The Ultra Beast is both Poison and Dragon type, which help cancel out the latter’s biggest weakness, Fairy. Naganadel’s arsenal of venomous and draconic moves help it dish out plenty of deadly damage. Ash certainly makes good use of his Naganadel in the anime, which helps him overcome the Alolan champion. Although those with a fear of needles will probably avoid it, for the rest of us, Naganadel is a welcome Pokémon for our teams.
#16: Kyurem
The Legendary mascot Pokémon for “Black & White 2,” Kyurem is another Dragon/Ice type. A gray dragon with blue, icy wings and head crests, Kyurem has an interesting connection to the original “Black & White” mascots. Although it’s already an immensely powerful Pokémon, Kyurem is able to fuse with either Zekrom or Reshiram to become Black or White Kyurem. Along with taking on characteristics of whichever it fuses with, Kyurem becomes even stronger and can use their signature abilities. It's not every Pokémon that uses a Legendary as a power-up!
#15: Koraidon & Miraidon
Another duo of Dragon mascots, Koraidon and Miraidon are the faces of “Pokémon Scarlet” and “Pokémon Violet,” respectively. The duo are Legendary Paradox Pokémon, meaning that they’re from different times, although there’s indication that they’re distantly related. Koraidon is from the ancient past, and is a Fighting/Dragon type. Meanwhile, Miraidon is Electric/Dragon and from the future. Both Pokémon act as mounts for the player during the game, aiding the player in traversing various terrains through different actions or forms. Given their usefulness both in and out of battle, as well as their striking vehicle-meets-dragon designs, it’s no wonder Koraidon and Miraidon have proven so popular!
#14: Dragapult
We have no idea what the folks at Pokémon were thinking when they dreamt up Dragapult’s design, but we’re still glad for the result! A ghost dragon that launches little versions of itself from its head may be incredibly weird, but Dragapult is as strong as it is bizarre! Dragon/Ghost is a fantastic typing, and with its signature move Dragon Darts, Dragapult can hit hard and fast! The near-permanent troll expression on its face is appropriate, since anyone using Dragapult in battle is almost guaranteed to be clowning on their opponent!
#13: Hydreigon
Hydreigon certainly turned heads during Pokemon’s outing into Black and White. Which is an impressive feat by itself considering these games are packed to the brim with ungodly strong dragon types. Its brutality is infamous among the Unova region, said to attack anything that crosses its path. Considering that its strength earned it a place in the villain Ghetsis’ personal team, we’d say this is one to keep an eye out for.
#12: Latios & Latias
Another Legendary Pokémon duo, Latios and Latias are a pair of jet plane-like dragons. This duo of Dragon/Psychic Pokémon sport very similar designs, although Latios is mostly blue and Latias is mostly red. They get even more similar when they Mega Evolve, since they both turn purplish. As alike as they are, they are different in some ways. Latios is always male and stronger offensively, while Latias is consistently female and more defensive. Regardless of which you favor, this pair of dragons have long been favorites among fans, thanks to their great designs, which are simultaneously cute and sleek.
#11: Haxorus
Another one of Unova’s awesome additions, Haxorus may not be as powerful or as difficult to obtain as Hydregion, but that doesn’t stop it from being as cool. It’s extremely territorial and won’t hesitate to put those bladed scales to good use. It’s definitely a potential recruit for any wandering trainer looking to add a little more bite into their team, and for those still not convinced, Gym Leaders Drayden and Iris were very quick to show just how deadly this Pokemon really is.
#10: Dracovish
Perhaps the most bizarre Dragon type of all, Dracovish is essentially a fish’s head stuck on the tail and legs of a dragon. This Water/Dragon type may look like it was designed by Picasso, but Dracovish has been a surprisingly strong force among competitive Pokémon battles. Its Signature Move, Fishious Rend, deals double damage if you hit your opponent first! This, along with its other powerful chomping attacks, has allowed it to take a bite out of its competition! Despite its hodgepodge appearance, there’s nothing slapdash about Dracovish’s power!
#9: Dialga & Palkia
Their rivalry ripples across the cosmos, often with disastrous consequences. Dialga has power of time while Palkia can manipulate the fabric of space. Both helped to create the region of Sinnoh and were the targets of the wicked organisation Team Galactic in their plot to recreate the entire universe. While their secondary types of steel and water make them juggernauts in their own right, it’s their signature techniques, Roar of Time and Special Rend, that make them worth the Master Ball!
#8: Flygon
Regarded as the Desert Spirit across the region of Hoenn, this Mystic Pokemon is most well-known for the sound it makes when its wings flaps, almost likes its singing. While that all sounds very pleasant, make no mistake that Flygon still has the fury that dragon types are known for. Evolving from the rather unremarkable Trapinch, its well worth the effort in training one up when you’re on the way to take on the Pokemon League.
#7: Goodra
Somehow pulling off the hat trick of being both slimy and huggable, Goodra is like Barney the Dinosaur crossed with a slug. Its default form is a pure Dragon type, while its Hisuian variant adds a snail shell and the Steel typing into the mix. Despite its adorable, somewhat derpy appearance, Goodra is a force to be reckoned with in battle. Its incredible special defense makes it practically a wall against special attacks and its other stats aren’t too shabby either. So, whether you’re looking for a friend or a surprising powerhouse Pokémon, Goodra is a “goo-d” choice.
#6: Giratina
Say hello to the Pokemon Devil. Occupying a plain of reality known as the Distortion World, Giratina lent a hand in the creation of the Sinnoh Region, only difference being it’s strong enough to lay the smack down on both Dialga and Palkia. Though what would you expect from a Pokemon that represents antimatter. To top it all off, it has access to two separate forms, so you can choose which brand of horror you want to inflict on your opponents should you manage to capture it.
#5: Mega Charizard X
The poster child for Mega Evolutions everywhere, just when you may have thought that Charizard’s popularity might have waned, he gets a makeover that shows that you can indeed teach an old dog, er…dragon, new tricks. Literally splitting blue flames with every breath, the fact that Charizard finally got a form where he was classed as a dragon type was more than enough for us. Favouring attack power over all else, you’ll be busting out this form every chance you get when you want to demolish your opponents.
#4: Salamence
Evolving from the less than impressive Bagon, its final form was nothing short of an engine of sheer destruction. No wonder it’s the crowning jewel belonging to the Hoenn region’s strongest member of the Elite Four. Preferring rough terrain, this thing is all about power, so prepare yourself for quite a tussle unless you have a Pokemon that can counter its flames and claws. And yes, in case you were wondering, such power does earn it the title of a pseudo-legendary and it even has a Mega Evolution.
#3: Garchomp
Becoming an instant classic upon discovery, who would have thought the adorable but dopey looking Gible would become a pseudo-legendary that would often spell doom for unprepared trainers. Able to fly so fast that it breaks the sound barrier, its intimidating look and insane attack power were reason enough alone to want to snatch one up. In fairness, its infamy probably arose from the Garchomp that belonged to Pokemon Champion Cynthia - that thing was a beast.
#2: Dragonite
Nowadays we may have more dragon types than we know what to do with, but way back in generation one, all we had was the evolutionary line starting from Dratini leading into Dragonite, and they were glorious. As a pseudo-legendary, this beast has power in spades and would be a welcome addition to any team of any generation. As for its appearances in the anime, its presence is still going strong. From its mysterious first sighting, its climactic battle against Ash’s Pikachu all the way to the modern series in Ash’s team. So…how about a mega dragonite, Game Freak?
#1: Rayquaza
The legendary Pokemon that has still yet to be toppled in the minds of fans everywhere, this ozone-fairing dragon overshadowed its counterparts and made it the ultimate challenge for third generation fans, who probably wished they hadn’t wasted a master ball earlier. Aside from its array of techniques that can decimate its foes, Rayquaza’s impact on the series has been so strong it has yet to be matched, and from the looks of things it won’t be pushed from its perch any time soon, given that it has a Mega Evolution that somehow managed to make it even more daunting.
Is there a mighty Pokémon dragon you’re mighty disappointed we forgot? Roar out your favorites in the comments!
