#3: Stand by Morty
This episode featured a number of interesting story threads, from Rick and Morty as a “Training Day” style buddy cop duo, to a commentary about the plight of the working class. But the storyline that really stood out as both familiar and endearing was the group of misfit Mortys on a journey to the "wishing portal." The parallels to “Stand by Me” are subtle, but anyone familiar with the story probably picked up on the similarities – like, the bespectacled Morty sharing a resemblance to Corey Feldman’s character Teddy, the Dramatic Morty taking on the role of River Phoenix as Chris, and Fat Morty standing-in as Jerry O’Connell as Vern Tessio. Why Roiland and Harmon chose to replace Wil Wheaton’s character Gordie with Lizard Morty is anyone’s guess.
#2: Rick is Morty
While a small but vocal segment of fans have believed this since season one, this episode featured two throwaway moments that may have lent some credence to this otherwise out-there theory. In the Morty classroom, one student stands out like a soar thumb: “Slow Rick”, AKA “Tall Morty.” Well, which is it? A Rick from another dimension who isn’t as intelligent as his infinite counterparts, or an aged Morty who never managed to graduate from Morty school? The second moment that had “Rick is Morty” truthers breathing heavily was the moment between a cloned baby rick and Candidate Morty. Are these clues to an eventual reveal, or misdirection by the writers to mess with Internet theorists – only time will tell.
Before we get to our top moment, here are some of the best lines from this week’s episode:
“I’ll lick whatever ain’t nailed down.”
“No thank you, and bad math.”
“Then you should use your left hand to eat more vegetables.”
#1: Evil Morty
There’s been much speculations on the message boards this season that C-137 Morty would slowly become the eye patched Evil Morty from season 1, episode 10, “Close Rickcounters Of The Rick Kind.” Turns out, Evil Morty’s been on the citadel, plotting his rise to power ever since we last saw him. Attentive fans may have realized Evil Morty’s return the moment his music kicked in, but it was the floating images of Evil Morty wearing the eye patch drifting into space along with those who opposed him that left no shadow of a doubt. Now, with an army of Ricks and the Citadel under his control, Evil Morty posses the greatest threat C-137 Rick and Morty have ever faced.
