What? You didn’t like this week’s episode of Rick and Morty? You must be a real Stone Cold Steve Austin. Welcome to “Watch Rick and Morty,” the weekly show where we take a look at some of the Easter eggs, important moments, and theories from the newest episode of Rick and Morty. On this episode, we’ll be taking a look at Season 3, Episode 9: The ABC’s of Beth.

#3: Not time travel

This throwaway line at the episode’s end was a clever nod to the many comments made by both series creators Dan Harmon and Justin Roiland that Rick and Morty would not be delving into the slippery slope that is time travel narratives. Despite multiple dimensions and infinite versions of each character co-existing in the universe, and in some cases in a giant citadel, it seems the creative team behind Rick and Morty have decided that time travel is where they draw the line. Though they’ve mostly kept to their word, the episode A Rickle in Time does feature a time-traveling fourth dimension being who hunts down Rick, but since it wasn’t Rick or Morty doing the time traveling, we’ll let it slide.

#2: Krutabulon vs. Varyx

This episode featured two distinct yet familiar alien species fighting it out. While they share little to nothing in common with the behavior of Xenomorphs or Predators, the elongated heads of the Krutabulon, as well as the mandibled Varyx, are clearly somewhat inspired by these iconic movie monsters. The three breasts of Kiara, the Krutabulon warrior priestess, is also a nod to the famous moment in Total Recall, though Jerry shares a little too much information with regards to Kurtabulon biology, especially considering he’s talking to his kids. Gross.

#1: The New Adventures of Rick and Beth

Did Beth decided to take Rick up on his offer to leave behind a clone of herself in this universe while she goes off to explore the multiverse and find herself, or did she chose to stay with her family and lead a normal life in spite of her - for lack of a better term - “Rick-ness.” The episode chose to leave us with an ambiguous conclusion rather than a concrete answer, but the strangely intimate interaction between her and Rick at the very end had some fans speculating as to whether Rick joined her in her journey of inter-galactic self-discovery. For one thing, how many times have you heard the real Rick say “I love you?” As we’re all well aware by now, Rick has little-to-no problem hoping dimensions, and it would stand to reason that he would leave behind clones of himself in order to maintain the status-quo. All we know for sure is Beth has a lot of issues.
