Fans of the Watchmen comic no doubt noticed this small but significant reference to “Tales of the Black Freighter” - the comic-within-a-comic that appears throughout Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons’s masterpiece. The tale focuses on a sailor whose ship is destroyed by the Black Freighter, and his desperate attempts to return home to warn his family of the ship’s arrival, but things, as you’d expect, take some dark and unexpected turns along the way. In the trailer, a scythe holding up a pirate flag appears, meaning the imagery of the Black Freighter is more than just a story in the future. How will this dark and strange story affect the world of Watchmen? We’ll have to wait and see.
#2: Ozymandias’ Pose
If you haven’t been following the production of this new series from Damon Lindelof, you may not have known that it will actually take place after the events of the comics. The only character from the original story that we know for sure will appear in the series in an aged Ozymandias, played by Jeremy Irons. In the trailer, we see Ozymandias in a meditative pose. It’s worth noting that this is the same pose Doctor Manhattan takes when he builds his fortress on Mars. At the end of Watchmen, Doctor Manhattan abandons earth, and his fate is unknown. Could this pose be hinting at Doctor Manhattan’s return? We certainly hope so!

One of the opening shots of the trailer depicts a stopwatch that appears to be stuck at 11:51, or 9 minutes to midnight. Fans of the comics will surely understand the importance of this image. Throughout the original “Watchmen” series, the Doomsday Clock is used to illustrate the global tensions and the growing possibility of nuclear war, with Midnight representing total global annihilation. In the books, the clock is shown at 9 minutes to Midnight at the ends of both the third and fourth issues, in which Doctor Manhattan leaves Earth to be alone on Mars and recounts his origin. Watches like the one we see in the trailer have a special significance to Doctor Manhattan, as his father was a watchmaker. Watches are one of the most prevailing symbols throughout the original story and are particularly significant to Doctor Manhattan’s storyline, so this shout could be hinting at Doctor Manhattan’s eventual return.
