Top 5 Good Games with Bad Metacritic Scores

Oh come on, they’re not THAT bad! Welcome to WatchMojo.com, and today we’re counting down our picks for the top five good games with bad Metacritic scores. For this list, we’ll be looking at five video games we consider to be pretty good, but which saw a negative or mediocre critical reception upon release.

#5: “Monster Hunter Freedom” (2006)

Metacritic Score: 71

While it’s true that “Monster Hunter Freedom” didn’t receive awful reviews, a 71 on Metacritic is basically a death knell for a video game. And let us tell you, this game deserves much better. Critics agreed that the game looked and played well, but they took major points off for its slow pace and it’s reliance on multiplayer (maybe they don’t have any friends). While it’s true that the “Freedom” series would perfect itself down the line, we still believe that this game was a welcome change and a great path-clearer for the series’ future life on handheld consoles. To have this kind of experience on the PSP in 2006 was pretty incredible.

#4: “Kirby Air Ride” (2003)

Metacritic Score: 61

We don’t know what critics have against Kirby, but they must have some sort of grudge against him for giving “Air Ride” a ridiculously low score like that. “Kirby Air Ride” served as Kirby’s iteration of “Mario Kart,” as you race against characters from the Kirby series while using various powers. It contains a surprising amount of content (including the awesome City Trial mode), the music is awesome as hell, and the racing is a blast with friends. Critics, on the other hand, found the game too easy and repetitive, especially when compared to similar racers. While we have to agree that it’s no “Mario Kart,” “Kirby Air Ride” is still a blast.

#3: “The Evil Within” (PC Release) (2014)

Metacritic Score: 68

While the console release of “The Evil Within” secured fairly respectable scores of 79 and 75, the PC release was comparatively destroyed by critics, resulting in the significantly lower score of 68. The PC release was heavily criticized for its technical issues and low frame rate, as the game was locked at 30 FPS. This was eventually fixed, but it made the experience even WORSE, as the already difficult game became borderline impossible due to faster enemy attacks. However, if you ignore the aspect ratio and simply play the game at 30 FPS (it won’t kill you), “The Evil Within” is a perfectly fine game which deserves better than a 68.

#2: “Minecraft: Pocket Edition” (2011)

Metacritic Score: 53

Most mobile ports of popular games are downgraded in some capacity, either in the graphical department or by altering the gameplay in some considerable way. Therefore, unlike the critics, we weren’t entirely disappointed with the mobile version of “Minecraft.” Critics viciously attacked the game, as they felt that the “Minecraft” experience wasn’t properly replicated for the mobile market. While it’s true that the game’s early release saw significant alterations and omissions from the PC version, it was still a fun and harmless mobile experience. Recent additions have made the game even better and closer to the core experience, and we believe that it deserves a critical re-evaluation, because 53 is just insulting.

#1: “Warframe” (2013)

Metacritic Score: 69

There’s clearly a huge discrepancy between the critics and the gamers when it comes to “Warframe.” Not only is there a huge gap in the critic and user scores on Metacritic, it is also one of the most popular games on Steam, indicating that there’s a huge fanbase, despite what the critics may have thought. The game has received mixed reviews at best, with many critics saying that it provided a promising start, but not enough substance or depth to be considered a great game. Today, we can safely say that the game is great, and, like “Minecraft: Pocket Edition,” it desperately needs a re-evaluation to better represent its current quality.
