VOICE OVER: MW
Script written by Savannah Sher

You better get used to this name because he's already gaining the respect of some of hollywoods biggest directors. Timothy Chalamet is one of 2017's breakout stars and here are some facts you may not know about him! Did you know that he is multilingual? He speaks french and english and learned Italian for the film “Call me By Your Name”. He's a theatre kid at art! Timothée Chalamet attended Fiorello H. LaGuardia High School of Music & Art and Performing Arts which propelled him into a career in theatre before he broke into the Hollywood scene with film and TV roles.

Even for film buffs, Chalamet’s name may not have been familiar before the beginning of 2017, but after his breakout year, that’s changing. Though he has been acting for awhile, Timothée Chalamet broke out in “Call Me By Your Name”, where he stars as Elio, a gay teenager exploring his sexuality. He also appeared alongside Christian Bale in “Hostiles”, and had a small (but memorable) roll in Greta Gerwig’s masterpiece, “Lady Bird”. 2018 seems like it will be just as busy for him, with roles in Woody Allen’s “A Rainy Day in New York” and “Beautiful Boy” with Steve Carell.

Not only does he have acting chops, but this young performer is also multilingual and can play several instruments. His father is French (which is perhaps unsurprising considering Timothée’s name), so when Chalamet was growing up he spent part of the year in a village outside of Lyon, and is fluent in French. Before shooting began on “Call Me By Your Name”, he was flown to Italy to brush up on Italian for the role and also to get up to speed on piano and guitar, which his character plays. Quite the triple threat!

Did we say triple threat? Well, we might have to upgrade that. Not only can he act and play several instruments, he also has some enviable rapping abilities. Yes, he has a hip hop past. He may be bashful about it now, but when he was younger he developed a rap persona where he used a variety of stage names including “Timmy Tim” and “Little Timmy Tim”. On both “Ellen” and “James Corden”, Chalamet’s alter ego was outed, to hilarious effect. We can only hope he uses this skill in one of his upcoming projects!

#2: His Casting Took A Circuitous Route

Since “Call Me By Your Name” had been in the works for many years before filming actually began, the casting process didn’t follow the typical trajectory. Chalamet’s agent is married to a producer on the film, and had Timothée meet with director Luca Guadagnino; but it took years before the casting moved forward. Chalamet has already taken home several accolades for the role, including several breakout performance awards and even Best Actor at the Los Angeles Film Critics Association. 2018 might see him snag bigger game.

Chalamet attended Manhattan’s Fiorello H. LaGuardia High School of Music & Art and Performing Arts which prepared him for a career in theater, which he pursued with gusto after he broke in as a child actor with small film and TV roles. After working on several commercials (which he wasn’t a fan of), his stage debut was 2011 in an off-Broadway play called “The Talls,”, and he received critical acclaim for the role. In 2016, he even took home the Lucille Lortel Award for Outstanding Actor in a Play after he was hand-picked by playwright John Patrick Shanley to appear in his production, “Prodigal Son”.
