By now you’re surely familiar with the concept of a Netflix, Hulu or Amazon original. Meet the YouTube equivalent! To be fair, this isn’t the video sharing site’s first foray into original, long-form scripted content. But “Origin” feels like the company’s first big push after rebranding their paid subscription service, YouTube Red, as YouTube Premium, in the lead-up to their global rollout. “Origin” premieres on November 14th, 2018 and, with a YouTube Premium subscription, will be accessible to viewers in dozens of countries, including Canada, the U.S., Brazil, the U.K., Mexico, and South Korea. The trailer debuted at Comic Con where it got a very warm reception, so expect people to tune in.

So… now that you’re all caught up on YouTube’s big streaming plans, let’s talk about the series itself. “Origin” promises a tense drama with horror elements set in space. The story follows a group of individuals attempting to escape their respective pasts by travelling to another planet where they intend to start a new life as part of a colony. Of course, in space… things rarely go as planned and our cast awakens to find that they’ve seemingly been abandoned by the crew and their fellow passengers. Trust is in short supply and things quickly take a turn for the worst. It’ll be interesting to see how the show balances human conflict with the extraterrestrial challenges.

You may have noticed a couple of familiar faces from the trailers, and your eyes do not deceive you! YouTube managed to nab two fan favorites from Warner Bros.’ massively successful Harry Potter film franchise - Tom Felton and Natalia Tena. Felton is best known for his iconic role of Draco Malfoy, and has since gone on to perform in critically acclaimed dramas like “A United Kingdom”, “Belle” and “Megan Leavey”. Natalia Tena played the lovable auror, Tonks, before joining the cast of “Game of Thrones” as Osha the wildling. The presence of these two talented actors certainly inspires confidence, especially since Felton seems to be playing an antagonist.

Anderson has made his career in the sci-fi genre. His big break came when he directed the live-action “Mortal Kombat” in the mid-90s. Since then, he’s helmed such films as “Alien vs. Predator”, “Death Race” and the “Resident Evil” franchise. Though his films rarely do well with critics, he’s beloved in sci-fi circles. The thing that makes his involvement with “Origin” particularly exciting is a little film he made in 1997, “Event Horizon”. It flopped at the box office and was critically panned, but it has since become a cherished cult classic of the sci-fi horror genre. From the looks of the trailer, Anderson is bringing that expertise to “Origin”.
#1: It’s YouTube Premium's First Scripted Series From the U.K.
Like we said, this is far from YouTube’s first scripted offering. Be that as it may, “Origin” is a notable first in that it sees the video streaming site pairing up with Left Bank Pictures, the production company behind Netflix’s hit series, “The Crown”. With the producers of not just “The Crown” onboard, but also producers from “Lost”, this spaceship is being steered by very competent and experienced hands. From the production value of the trailers, you can see that YouTube is clearly putting serious money into this series, and we can’t wait to see the end result.
