Released in 1986 for the Nintendo Entertainment System, this is one of the most revolutionary games ever crafted for the home consoles, and became instantly popular for its challenging gameplay, puzzles and thrilling sense of action and adventure.
Set in the fantasy world of Hyrule, the story is centered on a boy named Link. Venturing across the dangerous lands, he must quest to collect the eight fragments of the Triforce of Wisdom, which will empower him to rescue Princess Zelda from the evil Ganon.
Played from a top-down perspective, players must navigate a massive overworld filled with nine dungeons, loaded with puzzles and deadly enemies.
At the start of your quest, you are armed with nothing but a small shield. However, you can equip a sword that you find in a nearby cave. Further supplying you with equipment, and clues, you will meet the many citizens of Hyrule who are hidden in similar caves, underneath shrubs, and behind waterfalls.
Advancing to each of the dungeons, players fall into a maze-like collection of rooms. These are connected through a series of doors and secret passageways. From there, you must make your way to the end-level boss and claim a fraction of the powerful Triforce.
Collecting all 8 pieces of the Triforce, players can then enter the ninth dungeon to rescue the princess. Up until this point, players can take on the levels in any order they wish, though the difficulty ramps up with each, and certain items will have to be found before this is possible.
These items include maps and compasses, as well as the boomerang and magical flute.
A flexible gaming experience that can be played dozens of ways, it has also attracted attention for its hard mode called Second Quest. This is accessible by either beating the game, or by starting a save file called “Zelda.”
Re-released for several Nintendo systems, and the Virtual console, The Legend of Zelda is a long-running and flagship Nintendo franchise with countless sequels that continues to impress.
