Recipe: How to Make Glazed Doughnuts at Home
They’re portable, sweet, deep-fried and oh-so-delicious.
Ingredients:
- 2 (.25 ounce) envelopes active dry yeast
- ¼ cup warm water (105 to 115 degrees)
- 1 ½ cups lukewarm milk (80 to 85 degrees)
- ½ cup white sugar
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 2 eggs
- ⅓ cup shortening
- 5 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 quart vegetable oil for frying
Glaze:
- ⅓ cup butter
- 2 cups confectioners' sugar
- 1 ½ teaspoons vanilla
- 4 tablespoons hot water or as needed
Directions:
1. Start by sprinkling the yeast over the warm water. Allow that to stand for 5 minutes, or until the mixture is foamy.Try serving these plain, with a chocolate glaze or with jam. No matter what, they make a great snack or dessert.
2. Now, add the yeast mixture, milk, sugar, salt, eggs, shortening and 2 cups of the flour to a large bowl, and mix it for about two minutes at low speed.
3. Beat in the rest of the flour about a ½ cup at a time until you see that the dough is no longer sticking to the bowl.
4. Knead that for about five minutes, or until you see that it’s smooth and elastic.
5. Place that dough in a greased bowl, cover it, and wait until it has doubled in size. You’ll know the dough is ready when you touch it and the indentation stays.
6. Now, turn your dough out onto a floured surface, and gently roll it until it’s ½ inch thick.
7. Using a doughnut cutter, cut your dough into rounds. Cover those and let them sit until they double in size.
8. Meanwhile, melt the butter in a saucepan over medium heat. Then stir in the confectioners’ sugar and vanilla until the mixture is smooth.
9. Remove it from the heat, and add the hot water one tablespoon at a time until the icing is thin, but not watery. Set your glaze aside.
10. Heat your oil in a deep-fryer or a heavy-bottomed pot to 350°.
11. Gently place your doughnuts one at a time into the hot oil.
12. When your doughnuts rise to the surface, turn it over. Make sure to fry both sides until they’re golden brown.
13. Remove the doughnuts from the hot oil, and place them on a wire rack to drain.
14. While they’re still hot, dip the doughnuts in your glaze, and then place them back on the wire racks so the excess drips off onto a cookie sheet.
