Supervillain Origins: Red Hulk

Who could possibly be angrier than The Incredible Hulk? Well Red Hulk is definitely a strong contender. Welcome to WatchMojo.com and today we will explore the comic book origin of the Red Hulk.

As with most comic book characters, there are often re-imaginations and different versions to a character’s past. We have chosen primarily to follow the storyline which unfolded in 2010's Hulk #22 and 23 that was originally set up in 1962's Incredible Hulk #1.

The Hulk has fought a lot of opponents in his life, but none of them seemed as evenly matched with him as the Red Hulk. After all, they both were humans transformed by gamma radiation into monsters of enormous strength. But who exactly was the Red Hulk when he was in human form?

That was the burning question when the character suddenly appeared in 2008. But to fully answer that question, you had to go all the way back to the Hulk's first appearance in 1962.

As most people know, the Hulk was created when brilliant scientist Bruce Banner saved a teen-ager who had wandered into an experiment involving gamma radiation. By doing so, Banner exposed himself to massive amounts of radiation, turning into a muscle bound behemoth. Dubbed the Hulk, he had what might be called issues with anger management and impulse control.

Banner had been working with General Thaddeus "Thunderbolt" Ross, a hard-assed man of action who disliked the bookish scientist. But his dislike for Banner paled in comparison to his hatred of the Hulk. Hunting down the green menace became an obsession for the general.

Flash forward to 2008 where a powerful creature known as the Red Hulkshowed up on the scene, with a clear vendetta against the original Hulk. The new Hulk’s identitiy was a complete mystery, and would be for some time. Seemingly as strong as the original Hulk, Red Hulk had the ability to siphon energy from other beings. He was also a tactical genius – and incredibly aggressive. It turned out there also was a female version of him – the Red She-Hulk, and she tried to take him down.

Things didn't work out that way, though. During the fight, the two red creatures made a startling discovery: They were father and daughter. Yes, Red Hulk was actually Thunderbolt Ross. And She-Hulk was his beloved daughter, Betty.

How had this come about? In a special 2010 origin issue, Ross related how deeply he had resented being humiliated by the Hulk when first they met – and how desperately he desired the monster's power. His hatred eventually led him to commit treason by working with the evil villain M.O.D.O.K. to try to defeat the Hulk. His actions also inadvertently resulted in the death of his daughter.

Ross again made a pact with the dark side, agreeing to work with M.O.D.O.K. and another villain, the Leader, if they would bring his daughter back from the dead. They did so, then arranged for the Hulk's powers to be siphoned off and put into Ross, turning him into the Red Hulk. They also, without telling him, turned Betty into Red She-Hulk. Now filled with all the power he had ever desired, and more, Ross was free to try to mold the world into the shape always thought it should be.

Until the real Hulk arrived to whup his butt. It took some doing, but eventually he did – luckily for the rest of us.
The Red Hulk is an interesting character, not least because he sometimes operates on the side of good as well as evil. But whichever side he's on, whenRed Hulk is around, you know that mayhem and destruction are sure to follow.
