Top 10 Most Recognizable Video Game Weapons
Behold some of gaming’s most iconic instruments of death. Welcome to and today we are counting down our picks for the top ten most recognizable video game weapons.

For this list, we’ll be looking at weapons that are well-known among gamers, not necessarily for their destructive force by how synonymous they are with their respective series, not to mention just how downright awesome they are. Keep in mind we won’t be including weapons that first appeared in films before making the jump to video games, so don’t expect to see any lightsabers here.

#10: Buster Sword - “Final Fantasy VII” (1997)

Passed down to him by his mentor and friend Zack, the former member of SOLDIER Cloud Strife used this massive cleaver to wipe out the likes of Shinra.Inc and eventually clashed blades with the One Winged Angel Sephiroth. One of the pioneers when it came to two handed blades wielded by JRPG pretty boys, the Buster Sword certainly doesn’t need to compensate for anything when armed with Limit Breaks such as the Finishing Touch and the all-powerful Omnislash. If the son of Jenova fell to it then chances are it can cut through practically anything.

#9: Blades of Chaos - “God of War” (2005)

While later instalments in the gave would see Kratos inherit alternate versions like the Blades of Athena and Blades of Exile, we have to give it to the original set that were literally forged in the fires of war. Both a gift and curse from the former God of War Ares, these chain blades have assured Kratos victory over Gods, Titans and practically every other creature in Greek Mythology. It doesn’t matter if its close quarters or from a distance, the vengeful Spartan will always find a way to ensure that his signature weapons hits their mark, and then proceed to tear them to pieces in the most bloody way possible just for good measure.

#8: Fat Man - “Fallout” series (1996-)

Considering everything in this series is built around the results of nuclear war, is it any surprise that at one point we would have the chance to get our hands on a nuke of our own? Except this one comes in the very handy form of a launcher that catapults mini-nukes, laying waste to everything in its path. Whether you are a saviour of the wastes, a true lone wanderer or just love to cause chaos and destruction, there’s no greater feeling than lightning up the horizon with your own personal nuclear artillery.

#7: BFG-9000 - “Doom” series (1993-)

No matter what you think the F stands for, there’s no denying that when the forces of Hell start pouring out, this is the weapon you want have by your side when taking on a demonic horde. It’s had a few modifications over the years, but more or less you are guaranteed to unleash a large burst of green plasma energy as soon as soon as you pull the trigger. They might have the likes of the Mechademon ready to try and take your head, but when armed with this beast we’d wager Doom Guy is the one with the advantage.

#6: The Master Sword & Hylian Shield - “The Legend of Zelda” series (1986-)

Just as the mantle of Link is handed down, so is the weapon known as the Blade of Evil’s Bane. Along with the more than durable Hylian Shield that can even withstand eruptions, the Master Sword is the iconic weapon of the green-robed hero fated to do battle with the likes of the dark beast known as Ganon. No matter the obstacles and enemies that seem to throw themselves at Link, all eventually lose against the weapon originally crafted by a goddess, blessed by a princess, and wielded by the likes of a legend.

#5: Lancer - “Gears of War” series (2006-)

How do you improve on a heavy assault rifle? You add a built-in chainsaw bayonet of course! The tool of choice for Marcus Felix and company in their ongoing mission to annihilate the likes of the Locust and Lambert, it was designed by Marcus’ father during the early days of the war. An ideal weapon for every member of Delta Team, it allows them to lay down rapid fire on encroaching enemies as well as turn them into bloody chunks should they get too close for comfort. It may not be flashy but it more than gets the job done!

#4: Crowbar - “Half-Life” series (1989-)

So simple yet so effective. While the Gravity Gun (xref) could be considered far more recognizable, the fact remains that it’s more of a tool to be used with the moving of heavy objects and overcoming all kinds of puzzles. The crowbar on the other hand is the last method of defence for the likes of silent scientist Gordon Freeman, namely by breaking the heads of any unfortunate Zombies or Overwatch Soldiers that underestimate him. I guess when the Combine start to invade, even a thin slab of metal is better than nothing.

#3: Hidden Blades - “Assassin’s Creed” series (2007-)

From the earliest centuries all the way to present day, there is no better weapon for a master assassin than this subtle but sinister device, allowing the likes of Altair, Ezio, Edward and even Desmond Miles to dispatch their enemies with painful discretion. A small blade stored just under the wrist that’s able to be unsheathed at a moment’s notice, for those that value stealth this is the ideal weapon of choice. That’s not to say it can’t be brutal, we imagine multiple stabs to the body would sting a little bit.

#2: Fire Flower - “Super Mario Bros.” series (1985-)

As talented as Mario is with all that jumping, even the most veteran of plumbers need a helping hand every now and again, and when going against the likes of Bowser and his army of Koopas, you can’t go wrong with a well-timed fireball to the face. After picking this particular plant, Mario doesn’t only gain a new outfit but also the ability to shoot out flames any enemy target. If you’re ever in the mood to singe the shell off of Bowser then we highly recommend this rather spicy herb.

Before we reveal our number one pick, here are a few honourable mentions.

“Counter Strike” series (1999-)

Blue Shell
“Mario Kart” series (1992-)

#1: Energy Sword - “Halo” series (2001-)

The Type-1 Energy Weapon may be regarded as holy among the most elite warriors of the Covenant, but in our eyes we just can’t get enough of it. Whether it’s over the course the entire franchise’s narrative or through slicing apart rivals in multiplayer, a well-timed strike from this blade could mean the difference between victory and defeat. Despite the drawback of becoming useless after a set number of slashes, we could hardly wait for our own personal Spartan to snag up another one and jump back into the fray. It’s not packing the same power as a lot of the others in Halo’s arsenal…but damn does it look cool!
