Top 10 Anticipated Superhero Movies of 2020-2021

The future looks bright for superheroes! Welcome to WatchMojo and today we’ll be counting down our picks for the Top 10 anticipated superhero movies of 2020-2021. For this list, we’ll be going over the upcoming superhero films due to be released between 2020 and 2021 that are most anticipated by fans. Because we’ll be talking about upcoming movies, many of which are sequels, there will be spoilers ahead.

#10: “Venom 2” (2020)

Although the first film had a mixed reaction, a strong performance from Tom Hardy and some genuinely cool action buoyed “Venom” above its many issues. In addition, while it may not be a perfect movie, the potential for more is definitely there. An end credits scene teasing Carnage has many excited for the sequel, and rumours have been swirling about a potential crossover with the MCU and Tom Holland’s version of Spider-Man. Any chance to see these two iconic foes reunited on-screen has Spider-fans salivating.

#9: “Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings” (2021)

Shang-Chi may not be the most famous Marvel superhero, but this martial artist and master of chi has a devoted following that is eager to see him finally make his live-action debut. And the MCU is definitely due for an Asian lead. Although the actor cast in the title role, Simu Liu, is best known for a Canadian sitcom, the fact that he’ll be facing off against the Mandarin (the real one!), who will be played by Hong Kong legend, Tony Leung, definitely inspires confidence. Basically, we were sold on the promise of a kung-fu movie set in the MCU

#8: “The Suicide Squad” (2021)

As psyched as we are about Harley Quinn and “Birds of Prey,” we’re more excited to see her back in “The Suicide Squad.” The first film definitely had some issues, with many comparing it to an inferior version of “Guardians of the Galaxy.” As luck would have it, “Guardians” writer/director James Gunn has been brought on to write and direct “The Suicide Squad,” so hopefully he’ll do a better job than his imitators. As far as the cast goes, Margot Robbie, Viola Davis, and Jai Courtney will all be returning, among a few others, but sadly, Will Smith won’t be coming back. Still, newcomers like John Cena and Idris Elba are sure to help keep things fresh.

#7: “Black Adam” (2021)

It’s the Rock as a supervillain! Do you need any more reasons to be hyped? Black Adam is the archenemy of Captain Marvel a.k.a. Shazam. Wielding similar powers, albeit with more lightning, Black Adam is a villain with an anti-hero streak; trying to do good, but using ruthless methods. Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson is set to play Black Adam in his upcoming solo film, as well as a potential “Shazam!” sequel. While precious little is known about “Black Adam”’s plot or cast, we’re still excited about seeing the Rock embody the character and match wits with Billy Batson.

#6: Untitled “Spider-Man” 3 (2021)

Not too long ago, it was reported that “Spider-Man” would be leaving the MCU. Thankfully a deal was reached, and we’ll be getting a third “Spider-Man” movie starring Tom Holland. Currently, little is known about the movie’s plot, but it will presumably pick up where “Far From Home” left off. In addition, there’s a possibility of Tom Hardy’s Venom showing up. One thing’s for sure though – the title’s probably going to have the word home in it. “Welcome Home?” “There’s No Place Like Home?” “Home is Where the Web Is?” We could go on.

#5: “Black Widow” (2020)

It’s about time! One of the only original Avengers to never have a solo movie (sorry Hawkeye!), fans have been clamouring for a Black Widow movie for practically a decade. Set shortly after “Captain America: Civil War,” “Black Widow” will follow the title character as she revisits her past in Russia, as well as her family, while also battling villainous forces, including the character Taskmaster. Although specifics beyond that are pretty scarce, if the trailer is anything to go by, “Black Widow” looks like it’s going to be an action-packed spy thriller.

#4: “Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness” (2021)

The first “Doctor Strange” movie may have been a familiar kind of origin story, but it took Marvel’s usual format to some bizarre places. The sequel was partly teased in the end credits, with former hero Karl Mordo apparently going on a sorcerer killing spree. However, the additions of Scarlet Witch as well as comics antagonist Nightmare to the film are sure to throw things in a new direction too. Plus, the title alone has our interests peaked. Reportedly, there will also be a few scares in “Multiverse of Madness.” We’re willing to brave them though, if the movie delivers on more of the mind-bending and jaw-dropping action scenes found in its predecessor.

#3: “Wonder Woman 1984” (2020)

The first “Wonder Woman” film was a breakout hit that finally gave us a female led superhero movie to be proud of. The sequel, naturally set in 1984, looks to be a worthy followup thus far. This time, Diana will be battling villains Maxwell Lord and Cheetah, and also mysteriously encountering a man from her past – it’s Steve Trevor. C’mon! The trailer spoils it! Speaking of which, have you seen that trailer?! She’s swinging on lightning! If something that awesome doesn’t get you hyped, you might be dead inside!

#2: “Thor: Love and Thunder” (2021)

“Thor: Ragnarok” was a breath of fresh air for the “Thor” films, taking the god of thunder to new and funnier places, thanks to director Taika Waititi’s signature brand of humour. Fans of the third “Thor” film are rejoicing that Waititi is back to direct this follow-up, though fans of earlier films in the franchise have cause to celebrate too, since Natalie Portman’s Jane Foster will also be returning, and reportedly with a pivotal role. As sad as we are that Loki isn’t confirmed to be in it, new blood may also be arriving, as Christian Bale is in talks to appear in an unknown role. But as long as Korg is still around, we’ll be happy.

Before we get to our top pick, here are a few honorable mentions:

“Bloodshot” (2020)

“The Eternals” (2020)

“Morbius” (2020)

#1: “The Batman” (2021)

Despite appearing in quite a few DCEU films since, the last solo “Batman” movie was 2012’s “The Dark Knight Rises.” So it’s no wonder that fans are eagerly awaiting next year’s return to the spotlight for Batman. Directed by Matt Reeves and starring Robert Pattinson as Batman/Bruce Wayne, “The Batman” will pit the dark knight against not one, but three of his rogue’s gallery – Catwoman, played by Zoe Kravitz, the Penguin, played by Colin Farrell, and the Riddler, portrayed by Paul Dano. A younger Batman and a trio of foes should definitely make this an interesting adventure for the caped crusader.
