Welcome to MojoPlays, and today, we're counting down 10 games with the deepest character creation. For this video, we're taking a look at the games where you can spend hours in the character creation system! Our list includes “Baldur's Gate III” (2023), “Starfield” (2023), “WWE 2K23” (2023), “Street Fighter 6” (2023), “Cyberpunk 2077” (2020) and more!
10 Games With the Deepest Character Creation
Welcome to MojoPlays, and today, we're taking a look at the games where you can spend hours in the character creation system!
Lord knows I have spent too much time with "ModNation Racers" creating drivers and karts, but what game had you building custom characters for a whole afternoon? Did it make the list? Let us know down in the comments…and don't say Mii Maker. That would be cheating.
“Baldur’s Gate III” (2023)
"Baldur's Gate III" is truly a special game in how it invites you to roleplay with it. Of course, no RPG would be complete without a flexible character creation system. With the amount of hairstyles, colors, and facial features to choose from, you can design your own fantasy counterpart however you choose. On top of that, "Baldur's Gate III" gives you the option to choose from a preset of character classes or tinker with some of the stats yourself. Obviously, you're still tied to background bonuses and proficiency, but you really can play how you want throughout your adventure.
“Starfield” (2023)
On the surface, "Starfield" doesn't seem to be much different compared to Bethesda's other character customization systems. On the contrary, it offers so much more. Yes, you're still kind of at the mercy of presets when choosing stuff like eyes, chins, and noses. However, "Starfield" does give you room to adjust your various facial features and even a simplified body morphing function. We've already seen a number of players running around the universe as Buzz Lightyear, Ellen Ripley, and other sci-fi characters. Even with that tinge of uncanny valley, "Starfield's" character creator is a ton of fun to toy with.
“WWE 2K23” (2023)
The WWE games have a storied history when it comes to custom characters. With the various improvements and features from THQ's games to Yuke's, and now Visual Concepts, it is hard to imagine a WWE game without the ‘Create A Wrestler’ mode. And it only gets better with every release. "WWE 2K23" is chosen specifically for its influx of clothing to choose from, as well as the ability to implement custom entrances, banners, graphics, and more. You can even download wrestlers other players have created, and they all range from celebrities and pop culture icons to retired WWE Superstars or wrestlers that simply didn't make the cut.
“Saints Row” (2022)
Say what you will about "Saints Row." We know the discourse around its quality. We found it to be somewhat enjoyable, though we'll admit it's probably because of the character we made. We spent literally hours trying to figure out how to make our character, and the reason it took us as long as it did was because of how simplified yet deep the character creation was. In the end, we ended up making our boss Ellen DeGeneres. Why? Because comedy.
“Dragon Age: Inquisition” (2014)
We will admit that "Inquisition's" character customizer probably hasn't aged super well in terms of visuals and selections. However, it is still pretty solid, enough to throw it onto this list. The selection of races, hair, and voices are enough to make your character as close to your vision as possible. It may not be perfect, but if you're adaptable, you can still make a character worth investing in.
“Monster Hunter: World” (2018)
Even with the vast number of weapons at your disposal, we aren't necessarily talking about "Monster Hunter: World's" interchangeable weapons and roles in parties. The character creation here is just as excellent as most of our other entries in this list. The face sculpting gives just enough freedom to put either yourself or your favorite character into a game. The only gripe you might encounter will be with the lighting; many players will advise you to constantly check every angle of your character's face after a slight alteration before jumping in as uneven proportions can make your character look…off under the game's sometimes questionable lighting.
“Street Fighter 6” (2023)
We never thought we'd live to see a character creator in "Street Fighter," let alone an open world action RPG campaign in a "Street Fighter" game. And yet, here we are with "Street Fighter 6." This entry in Capcom's long-running fighting franchise has some surprisingly flexible customization in its selection of hairstyles, makeup, and colors. We actually wound up taking this opportunity to create the first anime waifu of MojoPlays. Ladies and gentlemen, meet Mojomi! She is a street thug who escaped a cybernetics laboratory to discover the meaning of "being human." And she plays video games. Look, you can make just about anything and anyone you want in this game and give them a story of your own. Or you can be like the other half of the internet and come up with some freakish nightmare of limbs and eyes. It's your call.
“Soulcalibur VI” (2018)
Even with all of the bells and whistles "Street Fighter 6" offers, we have yet to see a fighting game top "Soulcalibur VI". This is by far the most malleable character creation system we've seen in a fighting game. The only template you have to stick to is the weapon and moveset of the character that wields said weapon. Other than that, you have almost free reign in how gorgeous, vicious, bold, intimidating, dorky, creepy, or menacing you want your custom character to be. Just to give you an idea on how deep this system goes, you should go check out our video on the 10 Best Soulcalibur VI Creations. There were some wild designs floating around back then!
“Cyberpunk 2077” (2020)
"Cyberpunk" goes pretty damn hard on the character creation, and no, we swear that isn't an innuendo. The game really does give you a good amount of freedom to design the way you want to portray V. You can make them look tough, edgy, emo, cool, stalky, bulky, busty, bulgy (maybe), menacing, tatted up, anything you want. As you explore Night City, you'll find some options for clothing attire to give V some extra flair. And if, for whatever reason, you're wanting a change in appearance, you can do so thanks to the mystical powers of bathroom mirrors.
“Grand Theft Auto V” (2013)
Look, it's probably the easy answer, but if you're looking for a game with an insanely flexible character customizer, well, "GTA V '' is it, man. The online mode is, anyways. You are given so many options to choose from that you can make just about anyone you can think of. I, Ty, made myself just to mess with the features and see how close I can get my avatar to look like me. The result was so eerily similar that it almost creeped out my own brother. Basically, if I was to age ten to fifteen years (and maybe get a haircut and an affinity for ugly plaid suits), I would look exactly like my "GTA" character from top to bottom. Yes, it scares me, too.
