X-Men: Dark Phoenix has a villain in their sights, and her name is Jessica Chastain. The Oscar-nominated actress is in talks with the production to play the role of Lilandra Neramani, the alien Empress of the Shi’ar Empire who looks to track down, imprison and execute Dark Phoenix, which the X-Men take issue with. According to Deadline, first-time director Simon Kinberg will helm the project after writing several X-Men projects, including First Class and Days of Future Past. Chastain would be joining an already ensemble cast, with the core group of actors like Jennifer Lawrence, Michael Fassbender, James McAvoy, Nicholas Hoult, and Sophie Turner all set to reprise their roles for the latest instalment. If Chastain is indeed cast, she will join Cate Blanchett as one of Marvel’s most recent female villains.
Anything James Wan touches turns to gold. Or into a spinoff, anyways. Shortly after New Line Cinema green-lit The Conjuring 2 offshoot The Nun, they’re back at it again with another insidious creature front and center. No, not him, the Crooked Man! The tall and creepy ghoul that haunted the Hodgson house. The Crooked Man is based on an English nursery rhyme published in 1842. Mike Van Waes has been hired to write the script, which will be based on a story by Conjuring creator James Wan. Both Conjuring films and Annabelle earned $897 million worldwide, making it an easy decision for New Line to keep the franchise rolling. There’s yet to be any news on castings or a director, but a release date has been set; Friday, July 13, 2018. Can’t wait that long? The sequel to Annabelle, Annabelle: Creation comes out a little sooner; August 11, 2017.
Before we get to our final pick, here are a couple new releases:
“Rough Night” (2017)
“Maudie” (2017)
The cat’s out of the bag! Tom Holland let it slip that two more Spider-Man films are in the works, thus divulging a new Spidey trilogy. After answering questions from French publication AlloCiné on the character’s development, Holland blurted out “... it’s going to be an exciting couple of movies.” Noticing the gaffe, the journalist asked for clarification, where Holland admitted, “There will be a Spider-Man 2 and 3... Yeah, well now you know, sorry Marvel. Whoops!” Interestingly enough, the partnership deal between Marvel and Sony comes to an end after Homecoming 2 wraps up, which means the two will have to come to another agreement if Homecoming 3 is to be produced. Sony owns the rights to the property, but asked for Marvel’s creative guidance. With his admittance of a third film, does Tom Holland know that these negotiations are taking place? Are they already done? We’ll just have to wait and see to find out.
