#10: Debbie DownerSaturday Night Live
As much as the actors try not to let it happen, breaking on Saturday Night Live is inevitable. Its live sketch comedy show with the funniest up and coming performers in the business - of course people will laugh! That said, veteran cast member, Amy Poehler, claims that she only ever broke once during a taped show - during Rachel Dratchs first sketch as Debbie Downer. And who could blame her? Dratchs line delivery and facial expressions for the ultimate pessimist are pitch perfect. The sketch was so iconic, in fact, that Debbie Downer eventually became a popular phrase with a life reaching far outside the walls of Studio 8H.
#9: Parks PregnancyParks and Recreation
The release of Baby Mama coincided with the real life pregnancy of Amy Poehler, who would give birth to her first son in October of the same year. Her second child was born just two years later in 2010. Suffice to say, by the time Parks and Recreations sixth season rolled around, the last thing Poehler wanted was to deal with babies at work - but the writers had other plans. In a blooper for the shows fourth episode, the actress insisted that she was not being pregnant on [Americas] TVs no more. But, by the end of the season, Leslie was revealed to be pregnant with triplets! The stark contrast between the reactions of the actress and character add to the behind the scenes hilarity.
#8: Weekend Update Dress RehearsalsSaturday Night Live
Its been established that Amy Poehler typically didnt break during taped recordings of Saturday Night Live, but apparently dress rehearsals were a different story. In 2013, fans were treated to a rare look at what Poehlers Weekend Updates with Seth Meyers looked like before going live. Her biggest flub is a simple mispronunciation of George Clooneys last name, which immediately causes an eruption of laughter from the audience. (xref) She also adds an intentionally rude gesture to the end of one of her stories, before disappointedly lamenting that she wont be able to recreate it on air. (xref) Understanding how easy it is to make mistakes, she also offers a bit of moral support to her cohost in the voice of Rosie Perez! (xref)
#7: Halloween PhotoshootMean Girls
Mrs. George may think her relaxed parenting style makes her a cool mom, but she can be just as embarrassing as a regular mom. Case in point: this extended sequence from Mean Girls that imagines an alternative Halloween at the George household. Whereas in the original film, Reginas mom simply takes pictures of her daughters costume, a longer version sees her joining in on the fun. She hands the camera off to her husband, wrapping her leg around her daughter in a pose that feels far more inappropriate than the one that made the final cut.
#6: So Much Wardrobe, So Little ActingBlades of Glory
The 2000s were so chock full of comedies that we wouldnt blame you if you never caught Blades of Glory. The film tells the story of two disgraced ice skaters who find their way back into the rink by competing as a pairs team. This loophole understandably upsets their competition, Fairchild and Stranz, who are portrayed by former real world partners Amy Poehler and Will Arnett. Though they arent the films main characters, the couple still struggled to memorize all of their heavily-accented lines, as evidenced in the movies blooper reel. Poehler puts it best when she remarks that the movie was full of so much wardrobe, and so little acting.
#5: This Set Is HauntedParks and Recreation
They say laughter is the best medicine but, in this case, it seems to have done more harm than good. While filming for Parks and Recreations fourth season, a scene between Ben and Leslie was briefly interrupted by Rashida Jones sneezing. The actors laughed it off - and so did the film crew. Just as the cast seemed ready to restart, a boom mic fell into frame, hitting Poehler on the head. Thankfully she was fine, though she did declare the scene haunted. The actress had been witness to a similar incident two seasons prior, when a crew member laughing at her character break ran camera-first into a door frame. (xref)
#4: Lets Relax
Parks and Recreation
When you get a fit of the giggles it can be hard to stop. Amy Poehler knows this all too well - as illustrated by this blooper from the third season of Parks and Recreation. In the scene, Leslie is attempting to mediate a conversation between her secret boyfriend, Ben, and her notoriously strict mother, Marlene. Poehler, as Leslie, is supposed to be telling the two to relax, but cant seem to take her own advice. She struggles through several takes, eventually mocking her own inability to get through the scene. Even in the final cut, you can still see the actress give a sly smile after delivering the line.
#3: Bad Hair Day
Parks and Recreation
Leslie Knope is no stranger to a bad hair day. In Parks and Recreations first season, she got a sassy and powerful cut dubbed The Mayor, which made her the center of attention at her mothers award banquet. But that moment pales in comparison to this season five blooper. In the episode, Leslie is given news mid-perm, and is left desperately trying to undo all of the rollers caught up in her hair. Unfortunately, during one take, undoing the rollers also pulled apart Poehlers wig. Though the scene is instantly ruined, Poehler adds to the hilarity by staying in character with Aziz Ansari, joking about the idea of Leslie wearing a wig to work.
#2: Straightened Cherry StemParks and Recreation
Tying a cherry stem into a knot with your tongue is a popular bar trick with salacious implications. Of course, Leslie Knope isnt one to flirt normally - she goes the extra mile. In this scene, the parks employee subverts expectations by straightening out a once-twisted stem. The object of her affection, Ben Wyatt, appears to be both impressed and amused by the action, asking if she can show him how to do it. The presumably improvised scene is so clever and endearing that its hard to believe a version of it didnt make the episodes final cut.
#1: Multilingual Flub
Parks and Recreation
In Parks and Recs fifth season, Ben proposes to Leslie, and she immediately wants to tell the world. In a confessional, the newly engaged pair reveal that theyve even received noise complaints as a result of her enthusiastic sharing. Its a funny concept, particularly if you imagine Leslie literally shouting about her love from the rooftops, but it wasnt what the writers initially had in mind for the scene. The blooper reel reveals that Leslie was initially meant to memorize the phrase were getting married in Spanish, Dutch, and Klingon in order to tell as many people as possible. Unfortunately it was impossible for Poehler and Scott to get through the line without breaking into laughter. We cant say we blame them!
