Top-10-Times-Blooper-Reels-Were-Funnier-Than-the-Movie
Welcome to WatchMojo, and today we’re counting down our picks for the outtakes that cracked us up even more than the movies that preceded them.
#10: “Pirates Of The Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest (2006)
This second installment in the swashbuckling series is packed with fight scenes, special effects, and quite a few laughs – mostly courtesy of Johnny Depp. While the first film established Captain Jack Sparrow as a lovable, if irreverent, anti-hero, “Dead’s Man Chest” sees even more examples of Sparrow’s famous wit. But the movie’s hilarity is nothing compared to the gag reel. It’s clear the cast had tons of fun on set and were ecstatic to work together on another “Pirates” film. Their camaraderie is evident in every outtake. Plus, it’s pretty great seeing distinguished British actors dissolve into schoolgirl-like giggles while trying to film an epic fantasy.#9: “The Other Guys” (2010)
We’ve talked about the bloopers that follow 2010’s “The Other Guys” before, and with good reason! This buddy cop flick was quite successful, with its cast consisting of some extremely funny people – Will Ferrell, Mark Wahlberg, Michael Keaton, and Steve Coogan, not to mention a plethora of big-name cameos. Predictably, the outtakes display lightning-fast improv, lots of riffing, and some truly contagious laughter. This supersized gag reel is over 14 minutes long, and the on-set energy is palpable throughout. How they were able to get through any of these takes is beyond us!#8: “We’re the Millers” (2013)
This comedy follows a foursome of acquaintances who pretend to be a family in order to complete a cross-country drug smuggle. With a renowned cast, including Jason Sudeikis, Jennifer Aniston, and Ed Helms, and such an original premise, you’d think “We’re the Millers” would have been a major hit. However, the movie was widely considered average at best. But as the gag reel proves, you can’t bring this group of performers together and not expect gold. The bloopers feature so much rapid-fire improv that one has to wonder if a script was used at all! There’s also a very sweet moment at the end when they surprise-serenade Jennifer Aniston with the “Friends” theme song.#7: “Bruce Almighty” (2003)
It may have been a box office success, but certain critics declared it a little too sappy. That said, combining Jim Carrey, Steve Carell, and Jennifer Aniston on the same set resulted in some legendary bloopers. Jim Carrey, as always, is full of surprises, delivering his usual screwball antics (not to mention an impromptu piano recital). Morgan Freeman also lets out his silly side, even though he’s literally playing God. And for many, this was a first taste of Steve Carell – and if you’ve seen “The Office” or “The 40-Year-Old Virgin,” you know he’s impossible not to adore.#6: “Charlie's Angels: Full Throttle” (2003)
This action-comedy is filled with high-octane stunts and cheeky humor, but was met with some criticism for being simply “eye candy” for viewers. Perhaps this sequel shouldn’t be taken too seriously, but that doesn’t mean we can’t enjoy it! It’s the outtakes that steal the show. The bond between the angels and the rest of the cast was clearly strong, and that collaborative atmosphere translates perfectly into these bloopers. Plus, Cameron Diaz, Drew Barrymore, and Lucy Liu are three extremely noteworthy and talented actresses, so maybe that’s why it's so amusing to see them giggle uproariously like teenage girls.#5: “Men in Black II” (2002)
Film buffs were less than impressed with “Men in Black II,” which had big shoes to fill after its 1997 predecessor. But the behind-the-scenes antics manage to truly captivate. Like a few other sequels on this list, this cast was clearly thrilled to perform together again, and their tight bond is clear when you watch the outtakes. Will Smith's charisma contrasts with Tommy Lee Jones’ stoic demeanor, and flubbed lines and fits of laughter create a playful and upbeat tone. Watch Smith, Jones, and Rosario Dawson get scolded for their silliness during the “Automatic Pilot” scene and you’ll know exactly what we mean.#4: “The Cannonball Run” (1981)
Director Hal Needham was big on putting bloopers at the end of his films. And in the case of this 1981 riot, we’re happy for his penchant for outtakes. Featuring an ensemble cast including Burt Reynolds, Dom DeLuise, and Roger Moore, the movie's outtakes are packed with blistering fast wit and plenty of redone takes. The late, great Dom DeLuise had a laugh that was so infectious it’s almost criminal, plus the playful banter and shenanigans between the actors makes for a very fun atmosphere. Indeed, the gag reel may be considered even more enjoyable than the script itself.#3: “Grumpier Old Men” (1995)
While the original “Grumpy Old Men” was a surprise success, its 1995 sequel was a solid “meh.” But the outtakes are nothing short of wonderful. Starring cinema legends Jack Lemmon and Walter Matthau, “Grumpier Old Men” continues the feud between the two cantankerous neighbors. The bloopers capture the cast’s impeccable timing as they stumble over lines, ad-lib insults, and dissolve into fits of laughter. The movie may not have done very well, but its gag reel proves that the real magic of "Grumpier Old Men" lies in its cast’s offbeat humor. It’s a textbook case of the outtakes outshining what we actually see in the film.#2: “Grown Ups 2” (2013)
This film is a lot like its 2010 predecessor in that it didn’t exactly try too hard. It sports an abysmal Rotten Tomatoes score and was nominated for nine Golden Raspberry Awards. Reviews lambasted the film for its laziness and reliance on cheap jokes. Well, maybe the cast had thrown cares to the wind, but the bloopers prove they had a great time nonetheless. “Grown Ups 2”’s outtakes are a treasure trove of hilarity and a treat for fans, who get to enjoy their favorite comedic actors at their unguarded best. So if anyone went into “Grown Ups 2” expecting a masterpiece (for some reason), they’ll at least find one in the gag reel.#1: “Rush Hour” franchise (1998-2007)
This action-packed trilogy was not critically acclaimed, receiving a mediocre reaction at best. However, the “opposites attract” dynamic between Jackie Chan and Chris Tucker endeared moviegoers, and the comedy left them howling. The chemistry between Tucker and Chan is especially present in the riotous blooper reels, as they flub lines, miss cues, and break into uncontrollable laughter. Chan’s signature stunts lead to good-natured mishaps, while Tucker's improvisations bring unexpected hilarity. And all the while, the two just crack each other up. These outtakes are so much fun that they often surpass the scripted humor of the films.Which of these movie bloopers had you laughing the hardest? Let us know in the comments!
