Top 10 Most Hated Video Game Characters of the Century (So Far)

Nobody likes them, everybody hates them – they should go eat worms. Welcome to WatchMojo and today we’ll be counting down our picks for the top 10 video game characters everyone hates. For this list, we’ll be going over some of the most hated characters from video games, whether because of their actions, personality, or their role in the games. Some are hated for plot reasons, so some spoilers could be ahead.

#10: Mr. Resetti

10 HATED Video Game Characters Who Got BETTER With Time

“Animal Crossing” Franchise (2001-) Gamers make mistakes. It’s bound to happen – we’re all only human after all. But we also like to avoid the consequences of those mistakes, which is why resetting games is so tempting for a lot of us. “Animal Crossing” is centered around real time mechanics and owning up to your mistakes though, and punishes you with Mr. Resetti. Resetti is an angry mole who will pop out of the ground and berate the player at length if you turn off your game without saving first. The more frequently you do so, the longer and angrier Mr. Resetti’s rants will become, and the feeling is mutual for players used to playing games a certain way.

#9: Navi

“The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time” (1998) Navi is a fairy and the companion of Link, the hero of Time. Meant to aid him on his quest, Navi assists with targeting enemies and other tasks, but her usefulness is somewhat offset by her repetitive and irritating outbursts. Hey! Look! Listen! Watch out! Now imagine hearing those words over and over and over again throughout a whole game! Even the most die-hard fans of this celebrated game tend to despise Navi, as her annoying voice and frequent outbursts are some of the few blemishes on an otherwise magnificent title.

#8: Oddjob

“Goldeneye 007” (1997) A lot of games have “that character.” You know the one! There’s just something about them that makes playing as them unfair. The character that epitomizes this trope is Oddjob in “Goldeneye 007.” For as fondly remembered as it is, the game was a bit primitive when it came to aiming your weapons, with aiming up or down requiring the player to stop while moving their reticle freely. And for some reason, Oddjob, who in the film is a regular-sized guy, is shorter than every other character model. This meant that shots would just fly over his head, unless players stopped and took aim at him. In fast paced multiplayer matches, this essentially gave anyone who played Oddjob an unfair edge over their opponents.

#7: Duck Hunt Dog

“Duck Hunt” (1984) Dogs are a man’s best friend…except for this jerk! “Duck Hunt” involves using an early motion controller to shoot ducks with “assistance” from a dog. While the dog will hold up a duck in triumph if you hit one, if you miss, which most of did, it will laugh at you. Players hate to be trolled, and the “Duck Hunt” dog feels like one of gaming’s biggest trolls; making us feel bad for being bad at a game. Is it any wonder that many of us wanted to shoot the dog instead of the ducks? In the arcade version, you actually can, although it only ends up cartoonishly blackening its face and giving it a limp. Too good for ‘em we say!

#6: Ashley Graham

“Resident Evil 4” (2005) Are you a bad enough dude to rescue the president’s daughter from zombie cultists? Well, you’re going to need plenty of patience, at least, because Ashley Graham is one of gaming’s most frustrating escort characters. Which is really saying something, considering how much everyone hates escorting characters around. Large sections of the game feature the player tethered to Ashley, who frequently stops moving, gets lost, or dies easily, which adds no end of frustration and rage-quitting to a game that’s pretty dang excellent…besides her. Given the myriad ways Ashley can die, just letting it happen is actually kind of cathartic. Just don’t tell the President.

#5: Elise

Worst Video Game Couple of All Time: Sonic & Elise

“Sonic the Hedgehog” (2006) This whole game is frequently hated by “Sonic” fans and non-fans alike, but its most hated character is probably Princess Elise. A human princess and plot device, Elise is in constant need of rescue throughout the game. While princesses in need of rescue is par for the course in video games, the fact that she’s rescued and then recaptured several times is what irks many. Then there’s the fact that she, a realistic human girl, is the love interest for Sonic, a blue cartoon hedgehog. This creepy pairing certainly earned its reputation as being one of gaming’s worst couples, even making our own list.

#4: Denise Clinton

“Grand Theft Auto V” (2013) The aunt of Franklin Clinton, one of the “GTA V”’s protagonists, Denise Clinton is proof that age doesn’t always lead to wisdom. Denise constantly criticizes her nephew, despite having plenty of faults herself. She also doesn’t consult him when making changes to the house she co-owns with Franklin, such as turning it into a women’s center. Also, we’re all for feminism, but Denise’s particular brand of the philosophy seems to consist of disturbingly sexual yoga. Bottomline, if we, as Franklin, could get her out of the house instead, we’d do it in a heartbeat.

#3: Tom Nook

Top 20 Satisfying Deaths Of Hated Video Game Characters

“Animal Crossing” Franchise (2001-) Yeah, we’re breaking our one entry per franchise rule with this one, but come on – it’s Tom Nook! This raccoon frequently acts as the real estate owner and/or landlord to the player whenever they arrive in a new town, pressuring them into a mortgage on their first day in town and leaving them massively indebted to him for much of the first part of the game. Granted, he doesn’t charge interest, but it’s still a disturbing dose of reality in a game meant to be relaxing. Also, we’re pretty sure it’s illegal for his probably underage employees to work as many hours as he makes them do. Basically, Tom Nook is the closest thing these games have to a villain.

#2: Slippy Toad

“Star Fox” Franchise (1993-) What’s worse than a character with an annoying voice or one who is in constant need of rescue? How about one who’s both? Slippy Toad is a gifted engineer and a member of the Star Fox team, but none of that matters to gamers, when the toad with the high pitched voice can’t seem to fly the very vehicles he helps maintain and is very vocal about you needing to rescue him. Sure, you can’t see the enemy’s health if he dies, but that’s a small price to pay, for a game played in peace. Before we get to our top pick, here are a few honorable mentions: Preston Garvey “Fallout 4” (2015) ANOTHER Settlement? You Don’t Say… Little Mac “Super Smash Bros.” Franchise (1999-) No Recovery! Popplio “Pokemon” Franchise (1996-) Worst Sun/Moon Starter The Adoring Fan “The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion” (2006) GO AWAY! Frank Tenpenny “Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas” (2004) Crooked Cops, Man

#1: Diana Allers

“Mass Effect 3” (2012) A war correspondent in this divisive game, Diana Allers may not get punched like some other reporters can be in these games, but many wish they could. The crux of gamers’ hatred for Allers boils down to the actress’ terrible performance, as well as the fact that many feel she was thrown into the game in order to get good reviews from gaming website IGN, whom actress Jessica Chobot worked for at the time. Others would’ve preferred another reporter character, like Emily Wong, to have a more prominent role instead. Her impact on the story isn’t that large either. Even her romantic options aren’t as good as everyone else’s. Basically, the big story on Diana Allers is that gamers hate her.
