Top 10 Must See Trailers of May 2017
VOICE OVER: Matthew Wende
Script written by Sean Harris.

From match point to space travel, there's certainly lots to look forward to! Join http://www.WatchMojo.com as we count down our picks for the top 10 must see trailers of May 2017.

#10: “The Orville” (2017)

We start with a first look at Seth MacFarlane’s first foray into live-action TV. “The Orville” sees the “Family Guy” creator take control of a Star Trek-style spaceship destined for deep space. A show which MacFarlane says he’s always wanted to make, it thrusts audiences into a future world as Captain Ed Mercer gets a final opportunity to fulfil his dreams. The only catch; his First Officer is his ex-wife. Space travel has rarely seen a more motley crew, bathroom routines have rarely differed so greatly, and slapstick gags get a futuristic feel thanks to an unfortunate alien blob. “The Orville” has landed, and it’s a hyperdrive to hilarity.

#9: “GLOW” (2017)

Alison Brie stars next, for a Netflix trailer reintroducing us to the short-lived but sensational 1980s story of GLOW. Brie’s Ruth Wilder is a frustrated actress who gets wind of an audition for ‘unconventional women’. The unexpected gig sees her become one of the Gorgeous Ladies of Wrestling, a professional wrestling promo starting out in LA. The first glimpse of GLOW is two minutes stacked with spandex, headlocks, submission counts and well-choreographed showmanship. Come feel the noise, and return to wrestling’s glory days.

#8: “The Dark Tower” (2017)

A movie ten years in the making, an adaptation of Stephen King’s “The Dark Tower” series is long overdue. Since 2007, the film has seen multiple rescripts, production company switches and changes of director, but this trailer finally introduces Idris Elba as Roland Deschain, a lone gunslinger from another world. Buddied up with eleven-year old Jake Chambers, the unlikely pair must battle Matthew McConaughey’s Man in Black to prevent the end of the Earth, and all other dimensions. The Dark Tower is the key, and it must not fall.

#7: “It Comes at Night” (2017)

A mysterious forest with an unknown threat, strict rules for safety and a secluded cabin with only one way in or out. Scared yet? You should be! This glimpse of “It Comes at Night” turns up the tension between two families hiding from what’s outside. Beginning with Joel Edgerton in a gas mask and ending with the opening of the blood red door, it’s two minutes of creepy claustrophobia, and a whole host of nightmarish scenes flashed before our eyes. ‘Never go out at night’? It’s probably best to never go out, period. It’s very scary stuff.

#6: “Battle of the Sexes” (2017)

We take to the court next, for a first look at the upcoming Emma Stone/Steve Carell sports comedy, which revisits one of the most famous tennis matches ever played. Stone stars as sporting icon Billie Jean King, while Carell takes up the racket as former World number one, Bobby Riggs. The action takes place in 1973, when Riggs famously belittled the women’s game, calling out King in the process. It was a rivalry which transcended sport, and this trailer serves a cinematic ace.

#5: “Star Trek: Discovery” (2017)

The first Star Trek series since 2005’s “Enterprise”, and set ten years before the likes of William Shatner and Leonard Nimoy flew the final frontier in the original show, “Star Trek: Discovery” marks a new era in the intergalactic saga. This trailer welcomes us back on board with new characters and stories, and an iconic Starfleet style. The 15-part first season will air on CBS in North America, while Netflix bought rights for everywhere else, which means this might just be the TV event of the years! If “Discovery’s” $7 million dollar an episode budget is any sign of quality, it’ll be worth every cent.

#4: “Okja” (2017)

With mounting controversy surrounding the release of “Okja”, including its release on streaming Netflix causing a stir at Cannes Film Festival, this first look has found more headlines than most. Industry tensions aside, however, the clip gets right to the heart of the matter, and the magic, introducing the title character, an otherworldly ‘super pig’. But one girl’s friend is another woman’s food, and Tilda Swinton drives the clip with her promise to plate up the creature. A surreal tale to tackle real world hunger issues, “Okja” is by no means a conventional blockbuster, but it has everybody talking.

#3: “Marvel’s The Defenders” (2017)

We’ve watched the individual stories of Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage and Iron Fist play out on Netflix for more than two years; now is the time that they all come together. “The Defenders” is an end-game for Marvel’s most prominent TV venture, and this trailer is our first look at how the super-powered set-up will play out. Set to Nirvana’s “Come As You Are”, it’s time for a new breed of New York City hero syndicate, and these are the guys who’ve got our backs. As Iron Fist eloquently explains, they make ‘quite the team’.

#2: “Game of Thrones” (2011-)

We’ve had to wait a little bit longer than usual for a new season of Game of Thrones, but judging by the official trailer, it’ll be well worth it. In what will most likely be the final stretch of HBO’s hit TV show, the fight for the Iron Throne is heating up judging by the blood shed in this badass promo. Of course, a few of our favorite, and least favorite faces show up as well, and while the show is known for its misleading trailers, our hopes are that Season 7 will bring the action.

Before we unveil our top pick, here are a few honorable mentions.

“The Glass Castle” (2017)

“The Gifted” (2017)

“Good Time” (2017)

#1: “Blade Runner 2049” (2017)

Set 30 years after events of the original film, today’s winning trailer is our first extended look at a sequel to one of the world’s most successful sci-fi films ever. “Blade Runner 2049” sees Ryan Gosling step into Harrison Ford’s shoes as an LAPD cop hunting replicants. Following a tense teaser earlier in the year, this trailer shows us more of Gosling and Ford sharing screen time, while also revealing a creator character, played by Jared Leto, and offering us further glimpses into a dystopic future. Ridley Scott’s neo-noir original hit screens in 1982, while “Arrival’s” Denis Vielleneuve takes over directing duties here, for one of the most anticipated movies of the year.
