#10: Pirate Ship
“Super Smash Bros. Brawl” (2008)

We start off our list on the high seas. This ship, based on Tetra’s Pirate ship from The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker, may look sturdy but will constantly come into contact with enemy ships that will be more than happy to bomb you. Also be on the lookout for impending storms, otherwise this ocean just might become a watery grave.

#9: Brinstar Depths
“Super Smash Bros. Melee” (2001)

Probably one of the last places you’d want to end up. Set in the Metroid universe, the players must fight on a platform that is constantly rotated by Kraid. You know, that giant monster in the background, Samus’s other nemesis after Ridley. Best watch your footing or you’re a goner.

#8: Pokemon Stadium 2
“Super Smash Bros. Brawl” (2008)

There had to be at least one Pokemon themed stage on our list, and this one makes you feel like you’re in a championship battle. Just like the first version in Melee the stage is constantly changing, drastically altering the battle. One second the gravity becomes lighter, and the next ice coats the platforms making everything slippery. Mind your surrounding or suffer the consequences.

#7: Great Bay
“Super Smash Bros. Melee” (2001)

Another Zelda inspired stage, this time from Majora’s Mask. To win here, it’s all about controlling the space. Players will have limited platforms to move on, accept for the occasional giant turtle that will give you much-needed breathing room. However, stay for too long and you’ll end up at the bottom of bay. Trying to remain king of the hill in this stage won’t be easy.

#6: Delfino Plaza
“Super Smash Bros. Brawl” (2008)

Quite a pleasant change of scenery, especially when you’re trying to kick the crap out of people. Taken from Super Mario Sunshine, players will constantly be propelled around the area, requiring quick thinking to adapt their strategy. While the area is quite beautiful to look at, you make want to save the tour for later, one wrong move and you may end up splattered all over the plaza.

#5: Big Blue
“Super Smash Bros. Melee” (2001)

Buckle your seatbelts because this stage thrives on speed. Set in the F-Zero universe, players have to battle it out on top of Captain Falcon’s ship, but when it flies off they have to fight atop of several others racers while trying to avoid falling off and getting a face full of high speed tarmac if you land on the track. Physics? Wind Resistance? Not on this stage.

#4: Halberd
“Super Smash Bros. Brawl” (2008)

From racecars to badass airship. This little beauty is the flagship of Meta Knight, and it has several stages to it. The battle takes place in a hanger, during takeoff, and finally aboard the Halberd itself. It’s fast-paced and exciting, just be sure to watch out for the ship’s Combo Cannon, get hit with that and it’s all over!

#3: Hyrule Castle
“Super Smash Bros.” (1999)

No not the Melee version, one staff member here despises that stage: the N64 version inspired by Ocarina of Time takes the honor instead. Hyrule Castle is neutral in terms of what the stage has to offer, so it’s more the sentiment behind the area that it what it provides. But watch out for that random tornado that appears every so often.

#2: Final Destination
“All Super Smash Bros. games” (1999–)

Like Hyrule Castle this is a neutral stage, but instead of nostalgia, what we have here is last stage used in all modes of the franchise, as the name implies. This area is usually reserved for fights against Master Hand, with just a simple platform beneath you. Nowhere to run or hide, it’s just you against your opponent surrounded by a star-filled sky … until that changes.

Before our final challenger approaches, here are few honorable mentions.

Kongo Jungle
“Super Smash Bros.” (1999)

Fourside
“Super Smash Bros. Melee” (2001)

Spear Pillar
“Super Smash Bros. Brawl” (2008)

Mushroom Kingdom
“Super Mario Bros.” (1999)

Mario Circuit
“Super Smash Bros. Brawl” (2008)

#1: Saffron City
“Super Smash Bros.” (1999)

It’s one of the classics from the original Super Smash Bros, and the first time we saw a Pokemon themed area in the franchise. With a cityscape platform and different Pokemon appearing at random, this was a treat for newcomers, and while the series managed to revamp and improve it, this little gem won’t be forgotten any time soon.
