Top 10 Things to Remember Before Brooklyn Nine-Nine Season 8
#10: Release Date
The first and most pressing thing you need to remember about the swan song of “Nine-Nine,” is when it will be released. We’re sure you’re as excited as Boyle is about Jake and Amy’s relationship, so we won’t keep you in suspense any longer, if, for whatever reason, you’re getting this news here first. It will debut on Thursday, August 12th at 8pm. 2021, but you probably know what year and month it is. Hopefully. Months can be confusing, as Jake well knows. But hopefully you can remember to tune in to NBC at the appropriate date and time. Don’t be late!
#9: Only 10 Episodes
Season 7 of “Brooklyn Nine-Nine” only had 13 episodes, but despite the smaller order, the show managed to make it work. Season 8 will reduce the number of episodes even further, with only 10. That’s not a lot of time to wrap up the arcs of not only the characters, but the show as a whole. And while we’d naturally prefer the show to continue forever or at least one more season (ending on the 9th episode of the 9th season would be poetic), we’re glad that “Brooklyn Nine-Nine” won’t get cancelled outright. Again.
#8: Recurring Characters
“Brooklyn Nine-Nine” has had its fair share of memorable side characters over its run. But we still don’t know which of them will be joining the primary cast for the final season. Some of them seem a safe bet, such as Jake’s frenemy Doug Judy, or Captain Holt’s husband Kevin. But what about less frequent characters, like the Vulture or Adrian Pimento? Also, former series regular Gina Linetti was entirely absent from season 7, despite returning in season 6. Will she make one last dramatic appearance? Only time will tell, G-Hive.
#7: Jake & Amy Have a Baby
Jake and Amy have come a long way since their immature rivalry bloomed into romance. They’re married, and they’ve recently become parents to a baby boy – McClane Peralta-Santiago. As entertaining as their road to becoming parents was, we’re even more excited to see how raising a child changes them going forward. How will they juggle their work/life balance now? Will Jake’s own daddy issues crop up in his relationship with Mac? And how will raising Mac affect Jake and Amy’s relationship to each other? We can’t wait to find out!
#6: Another Heist
Heist episodes are an annual tradition for each season of “Brooklyn Nine-Nine.” These episodes are usually set on Halloween and feature the squad taking a break from police work, to participate in increasingly elaborate efforts to secure an item. With bragging rights, and the occasional fancy bit of clothing on the line, the 99 go to extreme lengths to come out on top, including betraying each other and injuring each other. They’re always hilarious and have led to most of the squad winning once. Could this time be Hitchcock and Scully’s year? And what crazy shenanigans will the detectives get up to this time? Will Cheddar take part? Anyone with the answers to those questions could very well be the ultimate detective - sorry - human/genius.
#5: Rosa’s Love Life
Rosa has had several committed relationships during the show’s run, with both men and women. She dated Holt’s nephew Marcus, almost married Adrian Pimento, and most recently dated Jocelyn Price. However, none of them have ended up working out. With most of the rest of the cast in happy, long-term relationships, it’d be sad to see Rosa be the only one without a partner at the show’s end. While a relationship isn’t the end-all be-all of happiness, we just want good things for her. Although, as long as she doesn’t end up with the Vulture, we think she’ll be okay.
#4: Wuntch is Dead
Ding dong, the witch is dead. One recurring character who will probably not be returning is Madeline Wuntch (madda-lin). Holt’s longtime nemesis, Madeline Wuntch died suddenly during season 7. However, even death wasn’t enough to stop her from trying to get one over on him. Wuntch left instructions behind with her nephew to trick Holt into badmouthing her at her service. While it’s possible that Wuntch has left more videos behind to taunt her foe, the days of the duo engaging in scathing repartee are sadly already finished. You might say that “Wuntch-time” is over.
#3: Holt is Captain Again
Speaking of Wuntch, Madeline is responsible for seeing Holt demoted down to officer to fulfil the requisite number of hours to become a captain again. Throughout the first part of season 7, we see Holt as a uniformed officer. It’s a refreshing change of pace to see the man in charge forced to answer to people he once commanded. Fortunately, after Wuntch’s passing, Holt regains his former position. We’re just wondering if Holt will remain the captain of the 99 or if he’ll be promoted. Holt has been considered for the commissioner position before, maybe he’ll actually get it now that the show is ending.
#2: Season 8 Will Tackle Police Brutality
“Brooklyn Nine-Nine” has tackled serious issues along with making us laugh before. While the show has examined racial profiling, the systemic violence against black people perpetrated by police officers has yet to be addressed. However, season 8 is set to address this ugly and disturbing trend. Reportedly, it even motivated the writers to throw out their first 4 scripts and start from scratch. “Brooklyn Nine-Nine” has never shied away from showing the world as it is, but it has also done a great job at portraying the way it should be.
#1: The Pandemic
The elephant in the room is definitely the Covid-19 pandemic. Many police officers have come into contact with the disease, so chances are that at least some of them may have caught it or need quarantining. Our money is again on Hitchcock or Scully. We’ve already seen some of the 99 in quarantine style situations, so how would they handle isolation? And what other effects will Covid have on the squad? Has it kept them busier? What’s their family life like? And will they be masking up? We doubt any of them will die from it, but it still needs examining.
