#10: Sanae Hanekoma
“The World Ends with You” (2008)

Every game needs a producer, and for this one Sanae's on the job. At first glance he appears to be a very relaxed barista, watching over the players of the Reapers' Game in a casual manner. However, in truth Sanae is a Fallen Angel, whose title and presence on Earth is punishment for trying to save the city of Shibuya. He may seem aloof and distant, but don't let that fool you – he cares about people more than he lets on.

#9: Bob
“Messiah” (2000)

Being cute doesn't mean being harmless. Just ask Bob, a cherub-like angel with the ability to possess people... and a penchant for murder. Bob's childish voice disguises his willingness to take control of those pesky humans and his capacity for slaughtering people indiscriminately, though at first he's reluctant to do his god's will. Once he's on Earth, though, Bob is a force to be reckoned with. But he's just so adorable we can forgive the violence against humans – mostly.

#8: Samael
“Painkiller” series (2004-)

With friends like these, who needs enemies? Meet Samael, a seemingly mild-mannered angel who gives gunwielding hero Daniel Garner his quest to kill four of Lucifer's generals. Samael's restrained nature and willingness to help Daniel give the impression that Samael is good at heart – until later instalments reveal he's as corrupt and power-hungry as they come. Samael seeks to take over the throne of Hell once Lucifer is gone, making him notonly a dark being but also a master of manipulating pawns. Darn.

#7: Angel
“Tekken” series (1996-)

Some angels prefer a light touch, and some choose to fight. This benevolent winged lady, introduced in 1996's “Tekken 2”, is the second sort. Angel's heavenly appearance and protective nature reflect her origins; she's the embodiment of good in Kazuya Mishima's heart, battling with the dark being Devil over which alignment Kazuya will follow. Her struggle to save Kazuya from evil, futile as it might be, is still admirable and it proves she's a heroine worthy of praise.

#6: Flonne
“Disgaea” series (2003-)

Loveable assassins seem to be recurring here. Regardless, we can't help but love Flonne, the quirky Angel Trainee with a heart of gold. Flonne begins her journey in “Disgaea: Hour of Darkness” when she's ordered to kill King Krichevskoy. However, upon meeting a love-rejecting half-demon, Flonne instead begins a personal quest to determine if demons can truly feel love. Despite transitioning from student to Fallen Angel – and eventually to Archangel – this angel exudes compassion and enthusiasm in everything she does.

#5: Trias the Betrayer
“Planescape: Torment” (1999)

With a name like that, you know he's trustworthy. As a fallen servant of heaven, Trias is chained and imprisoned deep beneath the city of Curst. If that hasn't raised an eyebrow yet, consider this: despite being an angel, Trias has the uncanny ability to lie... which he uses to great effect when the amnesiac Nameless One comes knocking. Still, Trias has a certain charismatic quality to him, likely a result of being voiced by the charming John de Lancie.

#4: Rodin
“Bayonetta” series (2010-)

Shopkeeper by day, fallen angel by night. At least, we think that's the life lived by Rodin, the mysterious man who trades Bayonetta speciality items in exchange for halos. This reasonably calm-and-collected businessman may not conduct himself like a former servant of the heavens, but that's the trick: Rodin's disguising his true form, a golden-winged being of unthinkable power. Combined with his natural strength and grab-bag of powers, Rodin is not to be trifled with lightly.

#3: Abaddon
“Darksiders” series (2010-)

As they say, no good deed goes unpunished. In “Darksiders”, this saying becomes true for theangel Abaddon, former leader of the demon-slaying Hellguard. Perceived to be a noble warrior, Abaddon is secretly quite the schemer; he was the mastermind behind shattering all but one of the Seven Seals, seeking to wipe out demonkind with a pre-emptive strike. Unfortunately this lead to his untimely death... but he returned as the Destroyer, choosing to rule rather than serve. Treacherous though Abaddon may be, there's something to be said about fierceness of character.

#2: Tyrael
“Diablo” series (2000-)

In a world full of fallen heroes and hateful monsters, here's someone who genuinely cares for humankind. Introduced in “Diablo II” as the Angiris Council's Aspect of Justice, Tyrael is responsible for maintaining order in the realm of Santuary. From destroying worldstones to battling the titular Prime Evil Diablo at humanity's side, Tyrael will go to whatever extreme necessary to protect Sanctuary – even forsaking his own place in the heavens. Yet at his core lies a deep-seated respect, and even love, for human potential that makes Tyrael's actions inspiring.

Before we unveil our top pick, here are a few honorable mentions:

Eva
“DmC: Devil May Cry” (2013)
Anghel
“Hatoful Boyfriend” (2012)
Shaher
“Tactics Ogre: The Knight of Lodis” (2002)
Therakiel
“Champions Online” (2009)
Morganna
“League of Legends” (2009)

#1: Pit
“Kid Icarus” series (1986-)

Palutena has her champion, and we have a lovably heroic angel. As the Goddess of Light's servant, this tunic-wearing angel may look like a kid but he's got some mileage on him; Pit is older than 28 in the “Kid Icarus” universe, old enough to serve as the captain of Palutena's bodyguards. Pit maintains a chipper attitude to carry him through his assignments, cracking wise from time to time and aiming to keep people's spirits up. Add to that keen leadership skills and an adaptive attitude towards combat, and you have one heck of an endearing hero.
