#10: Toe Sucking
Armie Hammer
Let’s be honest. We all did weird things as children that had little rhyme or reason. For example, one day in July 2019 Armie Hammer’s two-year-old son Ford decided to suck on his father’s toes. Why? Because he’s a little kid, playing around. His actions don’t require explanation. What could use an explanation, however, is why Armie thought it was a good idea to post this video on social media. As if the video itself wasn’t eyebrow-raising enough, Hammer added that the toe-sucking “happened for a solid 7 minutes” with the hashtag #footfetishonfleek. In response to backlash, Hammer’s wife Elizabeth Chambers wrote that it was actually “more like five seconds” and that “Sharing the video on Instagram was def not the best move on A’s part.”
#9: The Joy of Painting
Britney Spears
While Britney Spears has more or less gotten her act together, she can still occasionally leave the masses at a loss for words. Nobody knew what to think when the pop star posted this video where she suddenly felt the urge to paint. “Sometimes you just gotta play!!!!!!,” as Spears wrote. From her mid-video wardrobe change, to the musical accompaniment of Mozart’s Rondo Alla Turca, the video couldn’t be more random. Then there’s the painting itself, an array of colorful flowers and squiggly lines. While she’s not exactly Georgia O’Keeffe, Spears’ magnum opus sold for $10,000 at an auction for victims of the 2017 Las Vegas shooting. The buyer was none other than Robin Leach, host of “Lifestyles of the Rich and Famous.”
#8: What’s Going On?
Donald Trump
What’s that? Donald Trump posted something strange on social media? Surely you jest! In January 2015, two years before he was sworn in as President of the United States, Trump went on a tirade about the two most pressing controversies on the planet: the rumor that a new Indiana Jones movie was being made without Harrison Ford, and the announcement that “Ghostbusters” was being rebooted with an all-female cast. Many people weren’t impressed by Trump’s implication that Ghostbusters shouldn't be “only women”. More than anything else, though, it’s simply bizarre that one of the wealthiest men in the world would throw a hissy fit over a couple movies. The video had everyone asking, “What’s going on?,” but not for the same reasons that triggered Trump.
#7: Punch-Drunk Paulson
Sarah Paulson
It’s no secret that Sarah Paulson is a phenomenal actress, bringing class to every role she takes on. So, it’s rather jarring seeing this Emmy-winner slurring her speech and struggling to maintain balance in what appears to be a drunken video. While it’s debatable if Paulson is really wasted, her unusual behavior in the video doesn’t scream “sobriety.” Paulson seems like she’s trying to say something, but her sporadic laughter continually gets in the way. As the video progresses, Paulson starts listening to rap and throws a dance party, that is if you consider shaking your head back and forth dancing. In another curious video, Paulson can be found singing along with the “Game of Thrones” theme, although we use the word “singing” loosely here.
#6: Simpler Times
Juliette Lewis
Britney Spears strikes again, although she’s not the one directly responsible for this video. That distinction goes to actress Juliette Lewis. Rocking out to Spears’ 2013 song “Work Bitch” in her car, Lewis claims that Satan is controlling the universe and that only Britney can save us. We’re not sure why Lewis would single Britney out as humanity’s saviour, but maybe it was ironic?! Lewis wrote in the caption that the video “was meant to make people smile while we all try and deal with the horrific fires in California.” Even with that context, though, Lewis comes off about as stable as her “Natural Born Killers” character.
#5: Joining Facebook
Garth Brooks
By 2014, everybody and their grandmother had a Facebook account… except for country music singer Garth Brooks. In his first Facebook post, Brooks excitedly announced from his hotel room that he was finally jumping on the bandwagon. Brooks talks less like he created a social media account, however, and more like he just made a life-altering decision. Dude, you’re not moving across the world or running for office. You’re posting a message on Facebook. Yet, Brooks prattles on as if he discovered the meaning of life and that his posts are going to transcend all others. It’d be one thing if Facebook was still relatively new, but Brooks showed up about ten years late to “the conversation.”
#4: Thanus Theory
Josh Brolin
Leading up to “Avengers: Endgame,” the internet was bombarded with theories as to how Thanos would bite the dust. By far the most insane theory suggested that Ant-Man would shrink down, crawl up the Mad Titan’s buttocks, and blow him up from inside. Needless to say, that’s not what happened in the movie. But actor Josh Brolin did hilariously allude to the Thanus theory on Instagram. As Brolin grinds his teeth and squeezes his eyes, the camera zooms out to reveal that he’s on the toilet. If you watched this video without any knowledge of the theory, you’d assume that Brolin had gone off the deep end. Even with context, seeing an Oscar-nominated actor clenching his firsts while . . . taking care of business is beyond mind-boggling.
#3: Just Do It
Shia LaBeouf
Shia LaBeouf is no stranger to inexplicable behavior, but this YouTube video has got to be his most infamous and meme-worthy moment. Before explaining the video’s intention, LaBeouf looks into the camera and bluntly shouts, “DO IT!” The actor eventually starts talking about working hard and making your dreams come true, but it’s hard not to focus on his enraged delivery and odd hand-gestures. Is he trying to crush an invisible bug?! Turns out, the whole thing was part of an art project with London graduate students . . . but that doesn’t make it less weird. LaBeouf apparently took motivational speaking lessons from Matt Foley because he spends a majority of his speech screaming at the audience with zero direction.
#2: A Message for Emma Stone
Jim Carrey
From the beginning of his career, people have wondered if Jim Carrey is legitimately crazy or if he’s just that talented of an actor. You can rarely tell when Carrey is joking, which made this video weird even by his standards. In the wake of Emma Stone’s breakout work in films like “Easy A” and “The Help,” Carrey posted a video in which he complimented the actress’ looks and personality. Carrey proceeded to declare that he’d marry and have children with Stone if he were younger. That being said, Carrey acknowledges that he’s not an appropriate age . . . which nearly drives him to tears. Carrey mouths, “I love you,” before signing off, but the odds of Stone reciprocating his feelings are probably one in a million.
#1: Let Me Be Frank
Kevin Spacey
There are several adjectives we could use to describe this video . . . and “weird” is certainly one of them. Following allegations of sexual misconduct, Kevin Spacey was fired from his role on “House of Cards.” Spacey had no involvement in the final season, which killed off his character, Frank Underwood. About a month after the season hit Netflix, Spacey posted a video in which he channeled Frank. Breaking the fourth wall, Spacey/Frank insisted that no force could keep him away from his audience, seeming to refer to both “House of Cards” and the allegations against him. The way Spacey/Frank blurs the lines between reality and fiction left viewers everywhere baffled and disturbed. It didn’t help that he released the video on Christmas Eve.
