Meow let’s get this show on the road! Welcome to WatchMojo.com and today we’re counting down our picks for the Top 5 Hilarious Super Troopers Moments.
For this list, we’ll be looking at the most memorable and hilarious scenes from this Broken Lizard cult classic.
#5: Bulletproof Cup Gag
After being hazed throughout most of the film, rookie officer Rabbit’s trust in his fellow patrolmen is put to the ultimate test in a prank that seems too cruel to be true. Initially involving a gun filled with blanks aimed at a supposedly Kevlar-coated jock strap, “Super Troopers” shows its sadistic side by having Officer Mac test the impenetrable cup with live rounds. Laughter abounds while the nauseated Rabbit watches in horror as a practically nude Mac endures two shots to the groin, going flying each time. Topping the scene off is Captain O'Hagen’s incredulous—and disgusted—reaction to his boys’ use of real bullets for a seemingly harmless gag.
#4: Shenanigans!
Every man’s got a breaking point, and unfortunately for Captain O’Hagen, it is the overuse of the word, “shenanigans.” Played out as a typical stoner joke, the pot-induced Highway Patrolmen under O’Hagen continuously use the aforementioned word, prompting the surly superior to threaten gun violence on the next person who utters said word. Although he never follows through on his promise, the men’s mean-spirited baiting of Officer Farva to say, “shenanigans,” brings the joke full circle, with the stoned cops giddily offering their side arms to their O’Hagen in order to dole out punishment.
#3: Cat Game
This is wordplay at its finest. After pulling over an everyday speeder, played by stand up comedian Jim Gaffigan, Officers Mac and Foster decide to have a little fun with the unsuspecting commuter. Replacing every possible use of the word, “now,” with “meow,” this linguistically hilarious prank brings the laughs both on- and off-screen as Foster mercilessly digs into his victim for daring to question his grammatical accuracy before giving him a speeding ticket. Easily one of the most movie’s memorable sequences, the Broken Lizard crew decided to reference the “meow” scene in their sequel, even bringing Gaffigan back as the hapless offender Larry Johnson.
#2: Bear F***er
In one of the more gross-out gags in “Super Troopers,” the infamous bear f***er scene has gained much praise for its absurd subject matter and hilarious delivery. Featuring one of the most inventive Halloween costumes ever conceived, that of a life-sized papier-mâché bear being buggered by the costume-wearer, the scene plays out to distract the Highway Patrol’s longtime rivals in the Spurbury Police Department from seizing a huge drug shipment. As tasteless as the joke may be, the disbelief from the responding officers, and the general awkwardness of the whole situation makes this scene truly unforgettable.
#1: Opening Scene
Few movies can knock it out of the park in the first sequence, and “Super Troopers” managed to tackle this challenge head on. Reportedly based on a factual story from a Broken Lizard acquaintance, the opening bust sets the movie’s overall tone and silliness perfectly as three college buddies are held at the mercy of stone-faced Officers Thorny and Rabbit in a lengthy drug bust full of cheeky and fun shenanigans. Brilliant in its layered execution and featuring multiple gags, including a notable “tripping out” moment from actor Geoffrey Arend, this scene will make some think twice before bringing drugs on the road.
