The original “Deadpool” featured a killer soundtrack and this sequel upped the ante with invigorating tunes like “Nobody Speak” and “Welcome to the Party.” The filmmakers also made brilliant use of several classic songs you wouldn’t expect to hear in an action flick, such as Cher’s “If I Could Turn Back Time” and Dolly Parton’s “9 to 5.” Anyone who grew up in the 80s will also appreciate the inclusion of Peter Gabriel’s “In Your Eyes,” Pat Benatar’s “We Belong,” and A-ha’s “Take On Me.” Of course, the musical highlight is the opening credits number, “Ashes,” a brilliant homage to the James Bond films performed by Celine Dion. Although Tim Miller exited the director’s chair this time around, “Deadpool 2” found a more than capable replacement in David Leitch. After years of working as a stuntman and coordinator, Leitch has broken out as a filmmaker with movies like “John Wick” and “Atomic Blonde.” With a budget of $110 million, “Deadpool 2” was Leitch’s most extravagant project yet and he didn’t hold back in the action department. From Deadpool’s prison breakout to the climactic final showdown, the film had no shortage of inventive set pieces. The standout by far was X-Force’s assault on the prison-transfer vehicle. Complete with parachuting, car chases, hilariously unnecessary deaths, and the Juggernaut, this sequence had the whole package!

As much fun as the action is, “Deadpool 2” never forgets that it’s a comedy above all else. Like its predecessor, the film works in so many uproarious one-liners that it requires multiple viewers to catch them all. The filmmakers additionally litter the picture with hilarious references and sight gags. The blatant shots at the MCU and DCEU shouldn’t come as a surprise, but we never would’ve anticipated call outs to “Frozen” and “Yentl.” The film additionally packs in some of the best cameos of recent memory with several iconic X-Men casually closing the door on Deadpool. There are even a few sneaky appearances from Matt Damon, Alan Tudyk, and Brad Pitt as the Vanisher.

Ryan Reynolds once again delivers a pitch-perfect performance as the Merc with a Mouth, but he’s not the only reason to see “Deadpool 2.” When it was announced that Josh Brolin would star as Cable, it sounded like the greatest casting choice since… well, Brolin was selected to play Thanos! Brolin didn’t let us down with another badass, charismatic performance. The film additionally includes a couple star-making performances from Zazie Beetz as the lucky Domino and Julian Dennison as the hot-headed Firefist. While the movie is a terrific ensemble piece, it’s safe to say it wouldn’t have worked without Reynolds, who not only played Deadpool but also provided the voice of the Juggernaut.

What makes this sequence legendary, however, is how it virtually erases two of the most notorious blemishes in superhero movie history. After killing the lame version of himself in “X-Men Origins: Wolverine,” Deadpool guns down a wide-eyed Ryan Reynolds as he looks over the script for “Green Lantern.” Best of all, writers Paul Wernick and Rhett Reese have confirmed that the mid-credits scene is indeed canon. Way to fix the timeline, guys!
