Located in South Asia, India is a distinct country with a varied climate and rich culture. With weather ranging from desert, to rain forest and finally to snow cover in the Himalayas, the country is a great destination for a number of different activities. Boasting one of the world's largest populations, this country is also considered the birthplace of a number of important religions. Native to India are a number of herbs and spices that have permeated cuisines around the world, as well as teas and coffee. Travel to India
Officially known as the Republic of India, this country is found in South Asia. India shares its borders with Pakistan, Bhutan, China, Nepal, Bangladesh and Burma.
Location
India has one of the largest populations in the world, with 1.2 billion inhabitants, second only to China. In terms of area, India is the seventh-largest country. With a coastline of almost five thousand miles, mainland India borders such bodies of water as the Arabian Sea, the Indian Ocean and the Bay of Bengal. The country is also home to a number of islands.
Climate Guide
India’s climate is hugely varied due to various geographical elements. There is a range that spans deserts, to rain forests and finally to glaciers in the Himalayas. However, the entire country is considered a tropical location.
Cuisine
A wide variety of herbs and spices are native to India, and these flavors have made their way into local and even world cuisine. India is also famous worldwide for its tea, and within the country this drink has been consumed for centuries both as a beverage and for its medicinal properties. Many celebrated teas are cultivated only in India: for example Darjeeling is renowned the world over. India also has an active coffee industry. Most of the coffee produced in India is made in the south of the country, and in those areas the drink is an important part of the culture.
Religion and Culture
India has historically been located along important trade routes, and is famous for an abundance of cultural richness. The country is known as the birthplace of a number of the world’s major religions, including Hinduism, Buddhism, Jainism and Sikhism, while other notable religions arrived early in the Common Era. This religious variety has helped forge a unique and distinct culture in India.
Sports and National Symbols
Sport is very popular in the country, with cricket being India’s most popular sport to play. India has a number of unique national symbols, apart from its flag. The country’s national animal is the Royal Bengal Tiger, while its national bird is the Indian Peacock. The country’s fruit is the mango, and its tree is the Banyan tree.
A varied climate and landscape, coupled with rich cultural elements and history makes a trip to India an unbelievable experience.
