7 Things You Should Know About Portal 2

The hit first-person action puzzler returns! Welcome to WatchMojo.com, and today we’ll be filling you in on everything you should know about Portal 2 by Valve.

Number 1: The Plot

As an official part of the Half-Life series, the game takes place long after the events of Half-Life 2, and hundreds of years after the first game.
In Portal 2, you once again take on the role of Chell, the test subject who defeated the insane artificial intelligence computer system named GLaDOS, who was responsible for the death of the Aperture Science laboratory staff.

Retroactively re-writing the ending to the first game, in which you escaped, you have instead been placed in stasis following GLaDOS’ destruction.

Awoken in the far future, you and a friendly personality sphere named Wheatley must now repair the Aperture Science Facility, however in the process he accidentally revives GLaDOS, and she decides to once again use you as her guinea pig, this time aiming for not just science, but revenge.

Number 2: The Setting

Once again taking place in the Aperture Science facility, it has changed due to being physically untouched by human hands and has been overrun by decay and nature.

During your adventures you will travel from a fake hotel room, located in one of hundreds of shipping containers, to a giant warehouse that is ever shifting and changing, and back into the Aperture Sciences testing facility. Freshly rebuilt and larger than ever, there will again be occasions when you travel behind the scenes, away from the observation and control of the devious AI.

Number 3: Personality Cores

Within the game you will encounter several personality cores, and work together with one named Wheatley. Like the rest of the computer sub-systems, he is still active and has become independent from GLaDOS, roaming the facility on a rail system.

A kind and bumbling intelligence, Wheatley’s main concern is the increasing state of decay of the facility. As your guide, he helps you during the tutorial and initial stages.

Number 4: Gameplay and Items

Once again wielding the portal gun, which connects two areas across space, you must make your way through numerous physics based puzzles. Along the way you will jump and interact with the environment in order to survive the various locations.

Adding many levels to these challenges and brainteasers are the addition of items such as tractor beams, laser redirection cubes, aerial faith plates, pneumatic transport tubes, air vents, and special paint like gels.

Number 5: Gels

The most important and spectacular change to Portal is the inclusion of the gels, and their physics. Using these, they will alter whatever surfaces they touch within the environment. These include propulsion gel, which boosts your speed across surfaces, and Repulsion Gel, which allows you to bounce off of a surface. These compounds can even be applied to objects to change their physical nature and help you complete tasks in order to progress.

Number 6: Cooperative Campaign

Unlike the first game, Portal 2 will feature its own secondary campaign and plot starring two robotic characters named Atlas and P-Body. These bipedal machines have been made from a repurposed personality sphere and gun turret. Together, players must control these self-aware machines and work together to complete the test chambers and discover the reason for their existence. Interestingly, GLaDOS will become troubled by the robot characters working together and will attempt to aggravate their relationship through verbal trickery, such as praising one over the other.

Number 7: Going the Distance

With the original Portal game becoming a surprise hit, Valve has gone the extra mile to not only add a much deeper story, but one full of personality, side-characters, and songs similar to the incredibly popular tune “Still Alive” from the first game. Players will also get to learn more about the “Rat Man” that left you messages on the walls in portal 1, but experience a campaign and cooperative mode that are each almost three times larger than the original.

Conclusion:

Available for the PC, OSX, PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360, Portal 2 tells a cinematic story, while delivering a cutting-edge first person puzzle experience with tons of hilarious personality that should not be missed.
