Prepare your popcorn, because it’s going to be a bumpy ride. Welcome to WatchMojo, and today we are counting down our picks for the Top 10 Must See Anime Movies of 2019.
For this list, we’ll be looking at the flicks of 2019 that as anime fans you should have either already watched or have marked on your calendars. Keep in mind that Dragon Ball Super Broly won’t be included because it just missed the mark by coming out at the end of last year. Time to get cinematic!
#10: “Saga of Tanya the Evil Movie” (2019)
Lock and load because it’s time to head to war, again. Following on from the series’ rather bleak ending, the world is once again plunged into chaos, and instead of getting to sit back and enjoy her victory, Tanya and her unit are dispatched to do what they do best – reign down bullets and magic until their enemy is dead. Of course, it’s not going to be that easy this time since Being X has found a new champion in the form of Mary – a newly appointed soldier whose father just happened to be killed by everyone’s favourite murderous little girl. War truly is hell…should be fun to watch!
#9: “KonoSuba: God's Blessing on This Wonderful World! Legend of Crimson” (2019)
Oh, how we have missed these dorks. While plot details about this latest adaptation remain mighty thin, we can all agree that the following is guaranteed: we’re in for a grand adventure featuring the most useless of party members, Aqua is going to be painfully obnoxious, Darkness’s perversions will somehow save the day, and Megumin will explode anything she can get her hands on. Given the Legend of Crimson subtitle, one can only hope that this film focuses far more on the sorcerer and her beautiful ineptitude in all things except for making crap go boom!
#8: “Is It Wrong to Try to Pick Up Girls in a Dungeon?: Arrow of the Orion” (2019)
For those of you in dire need of your DanMachi fix in spite of the excellent Season Two, then you might want to do yourself a favour and check out this side-quest. It’s got everything you could want from a flick that sees a naïve dungeon crawler team up with a duo of oh so enticing goddesses and slay some monsters. Bottom line, it’s got more of Hestia, do you need another reason?
#7: “Rascal Does Not Dream of a Dreaming Girl” (2019)
While the original series managed to maintain a dignified and truly heartfelt narrative all throughout, there was one glaring plot thread that left a lot of us confused. Namely the existence of two Shoko’s. One a young girl that the cast befriended early on, and the other a much older version that seems to swoop in like a ghost every now and again, who also happened to be Sakuta’s first crush. Duel identities, time travel and a potentially devastating love triangle, our boy is going to have a tough time of it. As long we finally get that first kiss between him and Mai by the end, we’re on board!
#6: “My Hero Academia: Heroes Rising” (2019)
Hey, at least they had to decency to refrain from calling it Two Heroes Two. Considering how the first film managed to smash expectations and deliver an action-packed superhero film every fan adored, it shouldn’t come as a shocker that a sequel is already on the way. Details are obviously scarce, other than it looks to capitalize on Midoriya and Bakugo’s frenemy status by having them once again put aside their differences to take on bad guy newcomer Nine. You honestly had us at My Hero Academia, so the rest is just icing on what looks to be a rather delicious cake. Plus Ultra indeed!
#5: “Code Geass: Lelouch of the Re;surrection” (2019)
With the original series and its ending viewed as one of the pinnacles in modern anime, a movie built on the foundation of Lelouch returning was always going to be a do or die watch for most fans. If you’re willing to take the plunge, then prepare for quite the wild ride with a returning cast that have become almost sacred. Between Lelouch and Suzaku’s reaffirmed chemistry and overall badassery, the action practically sells itself. Throw in plenty of call-backs, and you’ve got a film that does indeed prove worthy of the mantle of Zero.
#4: “Fate/stay night: Heaven's Feel II. lost butterfly” (2019)
If you’re a Sakura fan, then hold on tight, because this is where things get dark. This retelling of the Fifth Holy Grail War not only continues its trend of having amazing animation, but also manages to tap into its inner Fate/Zero by going to some seriously twisted places. Sure, seeing Shirou and Sakura’s romance blossom is all kinds of sweet, but you’ve also got her slow corruption courtesy of the grail. All in all, it really sucks to be Sakura, but hopefully our boy Shirou will have something to say about that.
#3: “Weathering with You” (2019)
It’s written and directed by Makoto Shinkai, the man who gave us Your Name, so yes, this is absolutely worth your time. Once again bringing us an unconventional romance and coming of age story, a runaway teen finds himself befriending an orphan girl…who seemingly has the power to manipulate the weather. As you might expect, while there’s plenty of sunshine to be found, it doesn’t take long for rain clouds to blur their horizons, but in spite of such a thunderous relationship, the pair still manage to weather the storm that is young love. Could I fit any more weather puns into that? You betcha!
#2: “One Piece: Stampede” (2019)
As the likes of Gold already proved, One Piece’s filmography can actually pretty damn gripping at times, and if rumours are to be believed, this one is going to crush the rest! With a premise involving the hunt for another of Gol D. Roger’s treasures, it looks like the Straw Hats are set to take on some of the most infamous cutthroats to sail under the skull and crossbones, all in pursuit of the legendary booty. Wait…pirates behaving like actual pirates and going after treasure? In a One Piece film? I’d never thought I’d see the day!
#1: “Promare” (2019)
With blinding visuals from Studio Trigger and directed and written by the same people behind Gurren Lagann and Kill la Kill, this anime-gasmic roller-coaster about a set of firefighters looking to defend the world from crazed, flame-spewing mutants looks to be pretty lit. From all the bombastic teasers we’ve seen so far, we can only imagine just eruptive this film is going to be, though we know for sure it’s going to feature some pretty incredible battles. Did I mention how god-tier Galo’s hair is?
