Top 10 Video Game Characters You Can't Get Anymore
#10: Various Disney Characters
“LittleBIGPlanet” series (2008-)
Those who slept on the first two entries in the adorable platformer franchise also slept on some awesome DLC. Surprisingly, “LittleBIGPlanet” would prove popular enough to attract various license holders for collaborative DLC costumes. One astounding surprise was the addition of Disney characters. Now, you could play as Sackboy versions of Disney stars like Woody and Buzz, Jack Sparrow, the Muppets, and of course, a handful of the Disney Princesses! Unfortunately, European and Australian audiences can no longer purchase these costumes nor can they buy LBP 1 or 2; the game and all of its DLC were delisted from the PlayStation Store in October 2019.
#9: DLC Characters
“Marvel Ultimate Alliance 2” (2009)
While we did see a third game in the “Marvel Ultimate Alliance” series, it was nothing like its predecessors, and we may never be able to return to those again on modern platforms. With Activision having lost their Marvel license, you can no longer buy the digital versions of these games. Even worse, if you still have a functioning PS3 AND a physical copy of “Ultimate Alliance 2”, we hope you nabbed the DLC characters before they vanished. Otherwise, there’s no way for you to play as Magneto, Psylocke, Carnage, Black Panther, Cable, or Juggernaut. It certainly didn’t help that this DLC was available for a limited time already, even during the game’s initial launch!
#8: Swedish Chef
“Overcooked! All You Can Eat” (2020)
It isn’t often that you get to see indie studios work with massive corporations like The Walt Disney Company. However, Ghost Town Games had the honor and was able to bring an unlikely character to their remastered collection of the “Overcooked” games. At the 2020 Game Awards, it was revealed that the Swedish Chef would be added into the game as a limited-time DLC cook. Yes, players could now yell “chicken” and fumble about like the bumbling Muppet. Sadly, his luscious moustache and furry eyebrows were not around for long after “All You Can Eat” launched. The character was only available between December 2020 and April 2021 before he was delisted. Who knows if we’ll see him return with a fistful of bork--I MEAN, pork.
#7: Ayane
“Senran Kagura Estival Versus” (2015)
If you’ve heard of “Dead Or Alive”, then you’ve most likely heard of the more anime-styled and just as bouncy franchise, “Senran Kagura”. These two franchises have crossed over on more than a handful of occasions, and the earliest example is the inclusion of Ayane in “Estival Versus”. Admittedly, the inclusion makes sense - sexy ninja girl from fighting game franchise guest appearing in a game revolved around sexy ninja girls. However, despite the two franchises crossing over in another “Senran Kagura” game, Ayane would get axed from digital storefronts in March 2021. Well...we suppose we could settle for “Peach Beach Splash” if we REALLY wanna play as Ayane.
#6: Conker
“Project Spark” (2014)
Here’s a question everyone asks about this game: “What is Conker, a character geared mostly towards adults, doing in a game like “Project Spark”, a sandbox game aimed at kids?” We wish we had an answer, but this was probably Microsoft’s attempt to make “Conker” kid-friendly again. Even if you have some morbid curiosity to see this change for yourself, well, you can’t. Just before the game’s two-year anniversary, “Project Spark” would be delisted from Xbox along with all of its DLC. What hurts even more was that Conker was to get an episodic campaign called “Conker’s Big Reunion” only for it to be cancelled a few months after the first episode’s release.
#5: Darth Vader & Yoda
“Soulcalibur IV” (2008)
“Soulcalibur IV” had a lot of fans confused, but sort of in an exciting way. “Star Wars” characters in a fighting game that wasn’t “Masters of Teras Kasi”? Sweet! However, there was a catch: if you buy the Xbox 360, you’d get Yoda for free but have to buy Darth Vader whereas PS3 players got Vader but had to buy Yoda. Problem now is that there is no way to do this anymore. At some point, “Soulcalibur IV” was delisted from both Xbox and PlayStation platforms, and its DLC went with it. While it is possible to unlock the characters through online play, most of the fanbase has moved on. Who knows - Bandai Namco may have closed servers by the time you see this video.
#4: PlayStation Icons
“ModNation Racers” (2010)
In case you’ve never heard of this sleeper PS3 hit, “ModNation Racers” was basically Sony’s answer to “Mario Kart”. It was more technical, but the main appeal was creating your own drivers, karts, and tracks! During its lifespan, “ModNation Racers” would see several PlayStation characters get in on the action. Kratos, Sly Cooper, Jak & Daxter, Ratchet and Clank, and even Sweet Tooth would participate in the high-octane mayhem. Unfortunately, those who somehow still have a functioning PS3 today can no longer get these characters as “ModNation Racers” itself was delisted completely from PSN in October 2019. And we highly doubt anyone still has unused codes for these characters.
#3: Mai Shiranui
“Dead Or Alive 5: Last Round” (2015)
In addition to the aforementioned “Senran Kagura” franchise, “Dead Or Alive” has also crossed over with SNK’s “The King of Fighters” in its previous two iterations. While you can, at the time of this video, still get alluring ninja Mai Shiranui in “Dead Or Alive 6”, the same cannot be said about “Dead Or Alive 5: Last Round”. Mai would be available for purchase for roughly three years, debuting in 2016 and getting delisted in late 2019. It’s honestly sad considering how most of the fanbase has abandoned DOA 6 just to go back to “Last Round”, too. So, if you didn’t get Mai during those few years, your only choice is to hop onto DOA 6.
#2: Licensed Vehicles
“Rocket League” (2015)
Okay, we know a car is not a character, but since they are the main attraction in “Rocket League”, we’re making an exception here, especially considering how much has evaporated. For a time, “Rocket League” was making headlines with additions of various licensed vehicles. The Batmobile, the Ecto-1, the Jurassic Park Wrangler… Every movie buff was jumping on board! Alas, nothing lasts forever, and many of these licensed vehicles would be delisted after the version 1.7 update, which threw “Rocket League” into its free-to-play model. Even though some of them have returned to the in-game shop, none are available for direct, immediate purchase. Why can’t they ever keep DLC simple?
#1: Nancy Wheeler, Steve Harrington, & the Demogorgon
“Dead By Daylight” (2016)
In 2021, Netflix began their transition into the landscape of video game streaming services. In a very Disney-esque move, the streaming giant proceeded with its testing phase in Poland by delisting just about anything and everything to do with “Stranger Things”. Not only was an entire video game delisted from all platforms, but Behavior Interactive was refused a renewal of the IP’s license, forcing them to delist content from their horror multiplayer game, “Dead By Daylight”. As of November 17, 2021, players can no longer purchase Steve Harrington, Nancy Wheeler, the Demogorgon, or any “Stranger Things”-related cosmetics. Luckily, Behavior tried making up the loss to players by marking all “Stranger Things” content half-off on digital storefronts as well as the in-game shop.
